    Effect of Inorganic Salts on the Growth of the Mushroom Morchella hortensis

    It was found that M. hortensis could not grow in undiluted whey but it could in the whey diluted with water (Duvnjak et al. 1978). From the results obtained in this work it can be seen that this organism can grow in undiluted whey when sodium nitrate, ammonium chloride or ammonium sulphate are added. Relatively very low concentrations (0.2 ā€” 0.3Ā°/o) of those compounds in undiluted whey result in good yield of the mycelium. The fact that the microorganism grows in diluted whey without any additions but cannot grow in undiluted whey means that inorganic salts act on the membrane transport in M. hortensis in undiluted whey. Since the yield of the mycelial biomass, for the same quantity of whey is 2.5 times greater in undiluted whey with addition of those compounds than in diluted whey, it can be concluded that the salts are used by the microorganism as complementary sources of nitrogen. The influence of the initial pH of the medium is especially strong with the addition of ammonium sulphate in undiluted whey. The greatest yield of 2.5 g of dry mycelium was reached in 100 ml of undiluted whey with 0.8Ā°/o of ammonium sulphate

    Design and Characterization of a Novel Rotating Corrugated Drum Reactor for Wastewater Treatment

    A novel photoreactor system consisting of a TiO2-coated corrugated drum and a UV light source is experimentally characterized for the treatment of phenol-polluted wastewaters. The design incorporates periodic illumination and increased agitation through the introduction of rotation. The effects ofrent degrees and flat fins to increase surface area, varying rotational speed, initial pollutant concentration, and illumination intensities were studied. The corrugated and finned drums did not exhibit a critical rotational speed, indicating that there is excellent mass transfer in the system. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic analysis was applied to the degradation, and an average adsorption coefficient of K=0.120ā€‰L/mg was observed. The overall reaction rate increased with increasing surface area from 0.046ā€‰mg/L/min for the annular drum to 0.16ā€‰mg/L/min for the 40-fin drum. The apparent photonic efficiency was found to increase with increasing surface area at a faster rate for the corrugations than for the fin additions. The energy efficiency (EE/O) found for the drums varied from 380ā€“550ā€‰kWh/m3, which is up to 490% more energy-efficient than the annular drum

    Colorectal cancer is a major public health problem. The adenoma-carcinoma sequence offers potential for screening and surveillance. We tested the clinical behavior and diagnostic utility of connexin 43 (CX43) in connection with pathohistological risk. Immunohistochemical expression of CX43 in colonic adenomas and surrounding mucosa from 87 patients was determined. CX43 expression was higher in mucosa surrounding adenomas with high-grade dysplasia (p=0.047), larger adenomas (p=0.015) and villous adenomas (p=0.02). No difference of CX43 expression in adenomas according to grade of dysplasia was found (p=0.87). CX43 expression in adenomas was dependent on the patient's hemoglobin level (p=0.002), family history of colorectal cancer (p=0.009) and statin therapy (p=0.049). CX43 expression in mucosa surrounding adenoma could be an additional factor indicative of malignant potential. CX43 expression in colonic adenoma seems to be closely related to family history of colorectal cancer, statin therapy and hemoglobin level
