Therapeutic applications of probiotics
Over recent years new concepts in nutrition have been arising in consequence of some of the negative aspects of modern
lifestyles in today’s highly developed societies. This has brought about the appearance of the term “functional foods”,
which can be defi ned as a modifi ed foodstuff or ingredient that can promote better health benefi ts than those offered
by traditional foods. Probiotic bacteria have been included within the concept of functional foods, given that there is
suffi cient evidence to suggest their effectiveness in combating certain pathologies. Furthermore, numerous experimental
studies have identifi ed the action mechanisms that facilitate the development of the most effective microorganisms, while
at the same time establishing the limits of their effectiveness
In this work, the action of the fraction with hypoglycaemiant activity of the
lupine seeds, on the S.N.C. is studied. We have followed the Irwing Screening, and
studied more exhaustively the parameters clearly modified after the sample administration. The D.L.50 has been also determined.
We conclude that this fraction originates sorne alterations on the motor activity of the experimentation animals, depending on the dose administrated (low dose, depression; high dose, stimulation), and also a clear disminution of the body
temperature
Disturbances in metabolic, transport and structural genes in experimental colonic inflammation in the rat: a longitudinal genomic analysis
Background:
Trinitrobenzenesulphonic acid (TNBS) induced rat colitis is one of the most widely used models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a condition whose aetiology and pathophysiology are incompletely understood. We have characterized this model at the genomic level using a longitudinal approach. Six control rats were compared with colitic animals at 2, 5, 7 and 14 days after TNBS administration (n = 3). The Affymetrix Rat Expression Array 230 2.0 system was used.
Results:
TNBS-induced colitis had a profound impact on the gene expression profile, which was maximal 5 and 7 days post-induction. Most genes were affected at more than one time point. They were related to a number of biological functions, not only inflammation/immunity but also transport, metabolism, signal transduction, tissue remodeling and angiogenesis. Gene changes generally correlated with the severity of colitis. The results were successfully validated in a subset of genes by real-time PCR.
Conclusion:
The TNBS model of rat colitis has been described in detail at the transcriptome level. The changes observed correlate with pathophysiological disturbances such as tissue remodelling and alterations in ion transport, which are characteristic of both this model and IBD.This study was supported by the Instituto de Investigación Carlos III (PI051651, PI051625), the Spanish Junta de Andalucía (ARM/LD 43035), the Ministry of Industry, and Fundación Genoma España
The validation of a questionnaire for the identification of problems arising from the use of medicines by patients at a hospital emergency ward
Resultado: Tras
el pilotaje el cuestionario fue validado.Introduction: Adverse drug reactions (ADR) are health problems associated with the use of medicines. Many problems
caused by the taking of medicines may be encountered if we analyse the medication taken by the patients, their health
problems and their numerous causes. Personal interviews with the patient are essential in order to obtain information
about how the medicines are taken and their resulting effects. Hospital emergency wards are the gate of entry into the
health system for an ever increasing number of citizens and are therefore, suitable places from which to gain information
on the extent of problems caused by medicines. However, due to the characteristics of such wards, an adaptation of the
interview with the user is required
Objective: The aim of the present work is to design and validate a questionnaire as an instrument to obtain sufficient
information to be able to identify and evaluate problems caused by medication in users of hospital emergency ward
services.
Methodology: The design of a questionnaire will be carried out with the involvement of experts in Pharmaceutical Care.
A pilot study with a sample of 222 patients using hospital emergency ward services will be used as a method of
validation.
Results: The questionnaire was validated by the pilot study
Flavonoides and Infl ammatory bowel disease
Epidemiological studies have revealed the important role that foodstuffs of vegetable origin have to play in the prevention
of numerous illnesses. The natural antioxidants present in such foodstuffs, among which the fl avonoids are widely
present, may be responsible for such an activity. Flavonoids are compounds that are low in molecular weight and widely
distributed throughout the vegetable kingdom. They may be of great utility in states of accute or chronic diarrhoea
through the inhibition of intestinal secretion and motility, and may also be benefi cial in the reduction of chronic infl ammatory
damage in the intestine, by affording protection against oxidative stress and by preserving mucosal function.
For this reason, the use of these agents is recommended in the treatment of infl ammatory bowel disease, in which various factors are involved in extreme immunological reactions, which lead to chronic intestinal infl ammation
In this work the hypoglycemic activity exerted by 8 phytotherapy preparation
in.our country was investigated, these preparations have different therapeutic
uses and with different species of Salvia. Then the qualitative composition of these preparation was checked.
The results of the study were as the following: All the tested preparation were
found to exert hypoglucemic activity with exception of one. Two of the most
active are not populary used as antidiabetic.
For the identification of the components of these preparation it was detected
that there are qualitative difference with respect to the composition indicated by
the seller in three of these preparations
Farmacología del Glaucium Flavum Crantz. (I): Toxicidad aguda (DL-50) y Screening general de Irwin
preparations from the root, stalk, leaves and fruits of Glaucium flavum
Crantz have been described.
The results on the Claucium flavum toxicity have showed that the DL-50
ranged between 1.160 mg/kg and 6.900 mg/kg.
From the results of. the Irwin's test it could be concluded that the plant
causes reductions in spontaneus motility and produces a decrease in normal
body temperature (hypothermity)
Linezolid: suitability of prescription and its effects on renal function and haematology
Parece necesario replantearse la ampliación de las INAE.The objective of the study was to evaluate the suitability of linezolid prescription, incidence of thrombocytopenia in
critically ill patients and its infl uence on critical ill patients with renal disorder before the linezolid treatment. We
observed that the 37.5% of linezolid prescriptions were in Non-Approved Indications in Spain (NAIS). The incidence
of thrombocytopenia was 5.9%. We observed a signifi cant improvement in renal function of patients after two weeks of
linezolid treatment (p=0.024). The incidence of thrombocytopenia was similar to describe in bibliography. It seems to be necessary approved news indications in Spain
The kinetic study of dediazoniation in an aqueous medium of benzenediazonium tetraflourborate
The kinetic analyses carried out at different temperatures (20ºC - 40ºC) indicate that the dediazoniation process of the
benzenediazonium ion (BZ) is of the order of one, with BZ at A = 2,3.1015 s-1 and Ea = 112,5 kJ.mol-1 for the Arrhenius
equation, and ΔH‡ = 110,0 kJ.mol-1 and ΔS‡ = 40,7 J.K-1.mol-1 for the Eyring equation. The chromatographic results
reveal that BZ decomposes through a heterolytic process mediated by the aryl ion. The presence of Cu(I) or Cu(II) salts
and ascorbic acid produce a change in the reaction mechanism. The intermediate compounds produced in these conditions
are stable species that may be transported in the bloodstream. The model studied suggests a possible explanation for the
localisation of tumours produced by the administration of BZ in rats.
