The primary objective of this research was to examine the effect of provision of red pomegranate juice on the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and blood lactic acid in Wistar rats with maximum physical activity. The study employed a true experiment design. The pretest-posttest with control group design was done on 35 rats given maximum physical activity and treatment for 28 days. The rats were divided into 5 groups: the control group, group with treatment of multivitamin, group with treatment of red pomegranate 2 ml, 4 ml, and 6 ml. The MDA level was measured by TBARS method and lactic acid levels were analysed using ELISA. Comparison statistical analysis was done using paired t-test, while comparison of mean differences between treatment groups were tested using One-way ANOVA, and followed by LSD as the post hoc test. Provision of red pomegranate juice in a variety of doses significantly decreased the levels of MDA and blood lactic acid (p<0.05). The highest MDA level decrease occurred in the group treated with multivitamin (68.02%) and the highest decrease in the levels of blood lactic acid occurred in the group with 6 ml red pomegranate juice (25.94%). Based on the findings, it can be concluded that red pomegranate juice can lower the levels of MDA and blood lactic acid significantly in rats with maximum physical activity

Augmented reality to memorize Al-Quran for hearing impaired students: a preliminary analysis

    Get PDF
Quran learning among the hearing impaired has not been given much attention and exposure. This is due to the difference in the learning method among the hearing impaired compared to the non-hearing impaired. In lieu with this, a preliminary study has been conducted by using a qualitative approach. An interview was conducted with five experienced teachers to identify hearing impaired students’ behaviours and the method used to learn Al-Quran. Meanwhile, an observation with the hearing impaired students was also conducted. The findings show that the Tahfiz Akhyar method is used to memorize the surahs of Al-Quran by orderly arranging the verses using numbers. The memorization technique is based on the teaching of Prophet Muhammad when He taught the companions to learn Al-Quran. However, the result shows that, there are still errors in arranging the verses of the surahs in the correct order using the existing teaching aid. Therefore, these findings will be used as a guideline to develop the teaching aid application integrated with the Augmented Reality technology to help hearing impaired students to memorize the surahs of Al-Quran.Keywords: Augmented Reality, Quran learning, Hearing Impaired, and Memorizatio

Rockfall Source Identification Using a Hybrid Gaussian Mixture-Ensemble Machine Learning Model and LiDAR Data

    Get PDF
The availability of high-resolution laser scanning data and advanced machine learning algorithms has enabled an accurate potential rockfall source identification. However, the presence of other mass movements, such as landslides within the same region of interest, poses additional challenges to this task. Thus, this research presents a method based on an integration of Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and ensemble artificial neural network (bagging ANN [BANN]) for automatic detection of potential rockfall sources at Kinta Valley area, Malaysia. The GMM was utilised to determine slope angle thresholds of various geomorphological units. Different algorithms(ANN, support vector machine [SVM] and k nearest neighbour [kNN]) were individually tested with various ensemble models (bagging, voting and boosting). Grid search method was adopted to optimise the hyperparameters of the investigated base models. The proposed model achieves excellent results with success and prediction accuracies at 95% and 94%, respectively. In addition, this technique has achieved excellent accuracies (ROC = 95%) over other methods used. Moreover, the proposed model has achieved the optimal prediction accuracies (92%) on the basis of testing data, thereby indicating that the model can be generalised and replicated in different regions, and the proposed method can be applied to various landslide studies

A quantum algorithm for minimal spanning tree

    Get PDF
Quantum computing algorithms are considered for several problems in graph theory. Classical algorithms involve searching over some space for finding the minimal spanning tree problem in a graph. We modify classical Primpsilas algorithm and replace quantum search instead of classical search, of which it will lead to more efficient algorithm. Also we proposed the structure for non-classical algorithms and design the various phases of the probabilistic quantum-classical algorithm for classical and quantum parts. Finally, we represent the result of implementing and simulating Primpsilas algorithm in the probabilistic quantum-classical algorithm

The importance of physical activity to health is well recognized. Good health habits should begin from a young age. This article aims to explore physical activity among Malaysian school adolescents and factors associated with it. Data from the Malaysian School-Based Nutrition Survey (MSNS), comprising a nationally representative sample of school-going children aged 10 to 17 years, were used. The overall prevalence of physically inactive adolescents was 57.3%. Age in years (adjusted odds ratio = 1.2; 95% confidence interval = 1.16-1.23), gender - females (adjusted odds ratio = 2.9; 95% confidence interval = 2.66-3.10), afternoon school session, breakfast consumption (no breakfast and irregular breakfast), body mass index status (obese and underweight), and body weight perception (underweight perceivers) were significant factors associated with physical inactivity among Malaysian adolescents. Thus, there is evidence that programs to promote physical activity in this group should consider the combination of the aforementioned factors at the household, school, and community levels

Young People-Social Problem-Solving Skills: Development and Psychometric Properties

    Get PDF
There is a lack of culturally suitable tools to measure social problem-solving skills among young people in Malaysia. Hence, this study was conducted to determine the reliability and validity of our newly invented 14-item Young People-Social Problem-Solving Skills (YP-SPSS) questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha analysis shows that YP-SPSS has good reliability (α=0.7640), and the factor loadings for the fourteen items are above 0.5. Exploratory Factor Analysis suggests four factors: emotional awareness, insight into having problems, steps in solving problems, and analyzing the problems. The study shows that this questionnaire is statistically suitable to measure the social problem-solving of young people

Iodine Deficiency Disorder and Goitre among School Children in Sarawak -A Nationwide Study.

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), is one of the most important micronutrient deficiencies which has multiple adverse effects on growth and development. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of IDD among school children and to elucidate the distribution of iodized salt at household level in Sarawak, East Malaysia. This cross-sectional study was conducted among school children aged 8 to 10 years in 2008. A multi-stage probability proportionate to population size(PPS) cluster sampling method was used to obtain a representative state sample of 1200 school children. Spot urine samples were collected for the determination of urinary iodine concentration while the iodine content in salt was determined using field rapid test kits. The thyroid status was determined by palpation. Response rate was 92.0% (n=1104/1200). The prevalence of goitre among school children in Sarawak was 2.9% (5.2% in urban, 0.7% in rural). The median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) among the school children was 102.1 μg/L (IQR, 62.3-146.5 μg/L). Urban children had significantly higher median UIC of 109.3 μg/L (IQR, 72.4-159.0 μg/L) than their rural counterparts [91.9 μg/L (IQR, 55.7-140.2 μg/L)]. The salt samples tested by rapid test kit (RTK) showed only 46.0% of household salt contained iodine. The present study revealed that the population in Sarawak were of borderline iodine sufficient with mild IDD seen in rural areas. Hence, the state IDD control programmes need to encourage and advocate the consumption of iodized salt in order to eliminate IDD-related health problems in Sarawak
