“Compact Villages” have been set in rural areas under the “Compact plus Network” of national land policy. However, the government has not indicated how to choose Compact Villages. This study was undertaken to ascertain suitable locations for Compact Villages and to consider how to choose Compact Villages. From our analyses, we identified the possibility that not only a distribution of daily facilities, but also the social capital produced by residents can maintain standards. We presented various meanings of Compact Villages occurring from variation of the function and distribution of daily facilities produced by differences of chosen standards. Especially, the improvements of road network infrastructure will not bring benefits to all Compact Villages. Rather, it will promote the selection of fewer Compact Villages. This suggests that policy of “Compact plus Network” may have paradox

Semantic Mapping Based on Spatial Concepts for Grounding Words Related to Places in Daily Environments

An autonomous robot performing tasks in a human environment needs to recognize semantic information about places. Semantic mapping is a task in which suitable semantic information is assigned to an environmental map so that a robot can communicate with people and appropriately perform tasks requested by its users. We propose a novel statistical semantic mapping method called SpCoMapping, which integrates probabilistic spatial concept acquisition based on multimodal sensor information and a Markov random field applied for learning the arbitrary shape of a place on a map.SpCoMapping can connect multiple words to a place in a semantic mapping process using user utterances without pre-setting the list of place names. We also develop a nonparametric Bayesian extension of SpCoMapping that can automatically estimate an adequate number of categories. In the experiment in the simulation environments, we showed that the proposed method generated better semantic maps than previous semantic mapping methods; our semantic maps have categories and shapes similar to the ground truth provided by the user. In addition, we showed that SpCoMapping could generate appropriate semantic maps in a real-world environment

Roles of Phosphatidic Acid in Virus RNA Replication

Eukaryotic positive-strand RNA [(+)RNA] viruses are intracellular obligate parasites replicate using the membrane-bound replicase complexes that contain multiple viral and host components. To replicate, (+)RNA viruses exploit host resources and modify host metabolism and membrane organization. Phospholipase D (PLD) is a phosphatidylcholine- and phosphatidylethanolamine-hydrolyzing enzyme that catalyzes the production of phosphatidic acid (PA), a lipid second messenger that modulates diverse intracellular signaling in various organisms. PA is normally present in small amounts (less than 1% of total phospholipids), but rapidly and transiently accumulates in lipid bilayers in response to different environmental cues such as biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. However, the precise functions of PLD and PA remain unknown. Here, we report the roles of PLD and PA in genomic RNA replication of a plant (+)RNA virus, Red clover necrotic mosaic virus (RCNMV). We found that RCNMV RNA replication complexes formed in Nicotiana benthamiana contained PLDα and PLDβ. Gene-silencing and pharmacological inhibition approaches showed that PLDs and PLDs-derived PA are required for viral RNA replication. Consistent with this, exogenous application of PA enhanced viral RNA replication in plant cells and plant-derived cell-free extracts. We also found that a viral auxiliary replication protein bound to PA in vitro, and that the amount of PA increased in RCNMV-infected plant leaves. Together, our findings suggest that RCNMV hijacks host PA-producing enzymes to replicate

Fluctuation theorem for the renormalized entropy change in the strongly nonlinear nonequilibrium regime

Generalizing a recent work [T. Taniguchi and E. G. D. Cohen, J. Stat. Phys. 126, 1 (2006)] that was based on the Onsager-Machlup theory, a nonlinear relaxation process is considered for a macroscopic thermodynamic quantity. It is found that the fluctuation theorem holds in the nonlinear nonequilibrium regime if the change of the entropy characterized by local equilibria is appropriately renormalized. The fluctuation theorem for the ordinary entropy change is recovered in the linear near-equilibrium case. This result suggests a possibility that the the information-theoretic entropy of the Shannon form may be modified in the strongly nonlinear nonequilibrium regime.Comment: 14 pages, no figures. Anomalous momentum dependence of the multiband electronic structure of FeSe_1-xTe_x superconductors induced by atomic disorder

When periodicity of crystal is disturbed by atomic disorder, its electronic state becomes inhomogeneous and band dispersion is obscured. In case of Fe-based superconductors, disorder of chalcogen/pnictogen height causes disorder of Fe 3d level splitting. Here, we report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on FeSe_1-xTe_x with the chalcogen height disorder, showing that the disorder affects the Fe 3d band dispersions in an orbital-selective way instead of simple obscuring effect. The reverse of the Fe 3d level splitting due to the chalcogen height difference causes the splitting of the hole band with Fe 3d x^2-y^2 character around the Gamma point.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Background: The purpose of this retrospective review was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent total talar replacement for talar necrosis using the SAFE-Q score, which was hypothesized to improve postoperatively. Methods: The study included 24 ankles of 22 patients who underwent total talar replacement from 2012 to 2018 and were evaluated using SAFE-Q preoperatively and postoperatively. Statistical analysis was performed using the mean values of the SAFE-Q and JSSF scale scores, and the range of ankle motion was compared before and 3 years after the surgery using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: The SAFE-Q scores improved postoperatively in the all the subcategories. “Pain and Pain-Related” changed from a mean value of 42.2±23.9 points preoperatively to a mean value of 84.6±12.6 points postoperatively (p<.01); “Physical Functioning and Daily Living” changed from 36.3±25.2 points to 73.4±20.5 points (p<.01); “Social Functioning” changed from 34.1±34.8 points to 81.0±25.3 points (p<.01); “Shoe-Related” changed from 41.3±28.9 points to 75.4±22.3 points (p<.01); “General Health and Well-Being” changed from 36.7±32.1 to 76.9±29.3 points (p<.01). Conclusion: Twenty-four osteonecrotic tali of 22 patients treated with alumina ceramic total talar replacement achieved good clinical results, as evaluated using the JSSF ankle/hindfoot score and SAFE-Q. Alumina ceramic total talar replacement is the mainstream treatment for talar osteonecrosis.

Recently, a plan based on the concept of “Compact and networks” is progressing in societies experi-encing a population decline. However, planning has been promoted in municipalities because of the influ-ence of decentralization. Therefore, it remains doubtful whether city planning has consistency from a wide viewpoint. The purpose of this study is examination, from a wide viewpoint, whether a municipal master plan has consistency. To achieve that purpose, we create a consolidated map of a municipal master plan by particularly addressing the future urban structure in a municipal master plan. Because of the con-solidated map of the municipal master plan, results show that each regional plan is fragmented. Addition-ally, results suggest that it is necessary to match the plan in each municipalit

Tidying up a household environment using a mobile manipulator poses various challenges in robotics, such as adaptation to large real-world environmental variations, and safe and robust deployment in the presence of humans. The Partner Robot Challenge in World Robot Challenge (WRC) 2020, a global competition held in September 2021, benchmarked tidying tasks in the real home environments, and importantly, tested for full system performances. For this challenge, we developed an entire household service robot system, which leverages a data-driven approach to adapt to numerous edge cases that occur during the execution, instead of classical manual pre-programmed solutions. In this paper, we describe the core ingredients of the proposed robot system, including visual recognition, object manipulation, and motion planning. Our robot system won the second prize, verifying the effectiveness and potential of data-driven robot systems for mobile manipulation in home environments
