Study on steady-state thermal conduction with singularities in multi-material composites
Increasing demand in material and mechanical properties has led to production of complex composite structures. The composite structures, made of different materials, possess a variety of properties derived from each material. This has brought challenges in both analytical and numerical studies in thermal conduction which is of significant importance for thermoelastic problems. Therefore, a unified and effective approach would be desirable. The present study makes a first attempt to determining the analytical symplectic eigen solution for steady-state thermal conduction problem of multi-material crack. Based on the obtained symplectic eigen solution (including higher order expanding eigen solution terms), a new symplectic analytical singular element (SASE) for numerical modeling is constructed. It is concluded that composite structures composed of multi-material with complex geometric shapes can be modeled by the developed method, and the generalized flux intensity factors (GFIFs) can be solved accurately and efficiently
An fMRI study of error monitoring in Montessori and traditionally-schooled children.
The development of error monitoring is central to learning and academic achievement. However, few studies exist on the neural correlates of children's error monitoring, and no studies have examined its susceptibility to educational influences. Pedagogical methods differ on how they teach children to learn from errors. Here, 32 students (aged 8-12 years) from high-quality Swiss traditional or Montessori schools performed a math task with feedback during fMRI. Although the groups' accuracies were similar, Montessori students skipped fewer trials, responded faster and showed more neural activity in right parietal and frontal regions involved in math processing. While traditionally-schooled students showed greater functional connectivity between the ACC, involved in error monitoring, and hippocampus following correct trials, Montessori students showed greater functional connectivity between the ACC and frontal regions following incorrect trials. The findings suggest that pedagogical experience influences the development of error monitoring and its neural correlates, with implications for neurodevelopment and education
Quantum State Reconstruction of Many Body System Based on Complete Set of Quantum Correlations Reduced by Symmetry
We propose and study a universal approach for the reconstruction of quantum
states of many body systems from symmetry analysis. The concept of minimal
complete set of quantum correlation functions (MCSQCF) is introduced to
describe the state reconstruction. As an experimentally feasible physical
object, the MCSQCF is mathematically defined through the minimal complete
subspace of observables determined by the symmetry of quantum states under
consideration. An example with broken symmetry is analyzed in detail to
illustrate the idea.Comment: 10 pages, n figures, Revte
A novel size independent symplectic analytical singular element for inclined crack terminating at bimaterial interface
Cracks often exist in composite structures, especially at the interface of two different materials. These cracks can significantly affect the load bearing capacity of the structure and lead to premature failure of the structure. In this paper, a novel element for modeling the singular stress state around the inclined interface crack which terminates at the interface is developed. This new singular element is derived based on the explicit form of the high order eigen solution which is, for the first time, determined by using a symplectic approach. The developed singular element is then applied in finite element analysis and the stress intensity factors (SIFs) for a number of crack configurations are derived. It has been concluded that composites with complex geometric configurations of inclined interface cracks can be accurately simulated by the developed method, according to comparison of the results against benchmarks. It has been found that the stiffness matrix of the proposed singular element is independent of the element size and the SIFs of the crack can be solved directly without any post-processing
Quantitative trait loci for the diurnal flag leaf starch content during the early grain-filling stage in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
Starch is a product of photosynthetic activities in leaves. Wheat yields largely depend on photosynthetic carbon fixation and carbohydrate metabolism in flag leaves. The mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with flag leaf starch content (FLSC) in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was completed using unconditional and conditional QTL analyses. The FLSC of this population during the early grain-filling stage was measured at six stages in six environments. Combining unconditional and conditional QTL mapping methods, eight unconditional QTLs and nine conditional QTLs were detected, with five QTLs identified as unconditional and conditional QTLs. Four unconditional QTLs (i.e. qFLS-1B, qFLS-1D-1, qFLS-4A, and qFLS-7D-1) and one conditional QTL (i.e. qFLS-3A-1) were identified in two of six environments. Two QTLs (qFLS-1D-2 and qFLS-7D-1), which significantly affected the FLSC, were identified using the unconditional QTL mapping method, while three QTLs (i.e. qFLS-1A, qFLS-3A-1, and qFLS-7D-1) were detected using the conditional QTL mapping method. Our findings provide new insights into the genetic mechanism and regulatory network underlying the diurnal FLSC in wheat
Artificial Intelligence in Radiation Therapy
Artificial intelligence (AI) has great potential to transform the clinical workflow of radiotherapy. Since the introduction of deep neural networks, many AI-based methods have been proposed to address challenges in different aspects of radiotherapy. Commercial vendors have started to release AI-based tools that can be readily integrated to the established clinical workflow. To show the recent progress in AI-aided radiotherapy, we have reviewed AI-based studies in five major aspects of radiotherapy including image reconstruction, image registration, image segmentation, image synthesis, and automatic treatment planning. In each section, we summarized and categorized the recently published methods, followed by a discussion of the challenges, concerns, and future development. Given the rapid development of AI-aided radiotherapy, the efficiency and effectiveness of radiotherapy in the future could be substantially improved through intelligent automation of various aspects of radiotherapy
The flavor-changing bottom-strange quark production in the littlest Higgs model with T parity at the ILC
In the littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) the mirror quarks induce the
special flavor structures and some new flavor-changing (FC) couplings which
could greatly enhance the production rates of the FC processes. We in this
paper study some bottom and anti-strange production processes in the LHT model
at the International Linear Collider (ILC), i.e.,
and . The results show that the production
rates of these processes are sizeable for the favorable values of the
parameters. Therefore, it is quite possible to test the LHT model or make some
constrains on the relevant parameters of the LHT through the detection of these
processes at the ILC.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Non-Markovian dynamics in a spin star system: The failure of thermalization
In most cases, a small system weakly interacting with a thermal bath will
finally reach the thermal state with the temperature of the bath. We show that
this intuitive picture is not always true by a spin star model where non-Markov
effect predominates in the whole dynamical process. The spin star system
consists a central spin homogeneously interacting with an ensemble of identical
noninteracting spins. We find that the correlation time of the bath is
infinite, which implies that the bath has a perfect memory, and that the
dynamical evolution of the central spin must be non- Markovian. A direct
consequence is that the final state of the central spin is not the thermal
state equilibrium with the bath, but a steady state which depends on its
initial state.Comment: 8 page
Collaborative multidisciplinary management and expertise of cT2-3 locally advanced operable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma:two case reports
Background: The accurate clinical staging of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is pivotal for guiding treatment strategies. However, the current precision in staging for clinical T (cT)2 and cT3 stages remains unsatisfactory. This article discusses the role of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in the clinical staging and formulation of neoadjuvant treatment strategies for locally advanced operable ESCC. These challenges underscore the importance of precise staging in the decision-making process for appropriate therapeutic interventions.Case Description: Through the lens of two patient case studies with locally advanced resectable ESCC, the article showcases the intricate process of treatment planning undertaken by MDTs. It captures a range of expert perspectives from Japan, China, Hong Kong (China), Korea, the USA, and Europe, focusing on the challenges of differentiating between cT2 and cT3 stages of the disease, which is a critical determinant in the management and therapeutic approach for patients. Conclusions: The article concludes that the accurate staging of ESCC is a cornerstone in determining the most suitable treatment strategies. It underscores the vital role that MDTs play in both clinical staging and the decision-making process for treatment. Highlighting the limitations in current diagnostic methods, the article emphasizes the urgent need for advanced research and the refinement of diagnostic tools to improve the precision of staging, particularly between the cT2 and cT3 stages. It suggests that future research should consider whether a reclassification of these stages could be warranted to enhance treatment planning and outcomes for patients with ESCC.<br/
