    New Particle Formation in the Remote Marine Boundary Layer

    Marine low clouds play an important role in the climate system, and their properties are sensitive to cloud condensation nuclei concentrations. While new particle formation represents a major source of cloud condensation nuclei globally, the prevailing view is that new particle formation rarely occurs in remote marine boundary layer over open oceans. Here we present evidence of the regular and frequent occurrence of new particle formation in the upper part of remote marine boundary layer following cold front passages. The new particle formation is facilitated by a combination of efficient removal of existing particles by precipitation, cold air temperatures, vertical transport of reactive gases from the ocean surface, and high actinic fluxes in a broken cloud field. The newly formed particles subsequently grow and contribute substantially to cloud condensation nuclei in the remote marine boundary layer and thereby impact marine low clouds

    Nurse clinicians need to make complex decisions on a continual basis, while delivering cost-effective treatments. The rapid proliferation of medical and nursing knowledge complicates the decision-making process, particularly for novice nurses. We describe a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) for the novice nurse that combines evidence-based nursing knowledge with specific patient information to create a real-time guide through the nursing diagnostic care process. The goal of the paper is to describe how an appropriately designed and evidence-based CDSS can aid the nursing practice. An off-the-shelf handheld computer is utilized to deliver clinical knowledge to the nurse, via wireless link to a central server and a data repository. In describing the software architecture of the system, particular emphasis is paid to the issue of appropriate design by discussing the steps taken to address system extensibility, performance, reliability, and security, which are important factors in the design of a CDSS

    Optimal Deployment of Solar Insecticidal Lamps over Constrained Locations in Mixed-Crop Farmlands

    Solar Insecticidal Lamps (SILs) play a vital role in green prevention and control of pests. By embedding SILs in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), we establish a novel agricultural Internet of Things (IoT), referred to as the SILIoTs. In practice, the deployment of SIL nodes is determined by the geographical characteristics of an actual farmland, the constraints on the locations of SIL nodes, and the radio-wave propagation in complex agricultural environment. In this paper, we mainly focus on the constrained SIL Deployment Problem (cSILDP) in a mixed-crop farmland, where the locations used to deploy SIL nodes are a limited set of candidates located on the ridges. We formulate the cSILDP in this scenario as a Connected Set Cover (CSC) problem, and propose a Hole Aware Node Deployment Method (HANDM) based on the greedy algorithm to solve the constrained optimization problem. The HANDM is a two-phase method. In the first phase, a novel deployment strategy is utilised to guarantee only a single coverage hole in each iteration, based on which a set of suboptimal locations is found for the deployment of SIL nodes. In the second phase, according to the operations of deletion and fusion, the optimal locations are obtained to meet the requirements on complete coverage and connectivity. Experimental results show that our proposed method achieves better performance than the peer algorithms, specifically in terms of deployment cost

    STUDY ON ANTI-OSTEOSARCOMA ACTIVITY OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF VENENUM BUFONIS IN VITRO

    Background: Venenum bufonis is the dried white secretion of the auricular and skin glands of Bufo gargarizans Cantor, or Bufo melanostictus Schneider, Bufonidae. It is used in the treatment of deep-rooted carbuncle, boils and swelling; pain in the throat, heart stroke, coma, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. The objective of this paper is to preliminarily observe the effects of ethanol extract of Venenum bufonis on growth, and proliferation of human osteosarcoma U2OS cell lines, and to provide a theoretical basis for an in-depth study of the clinical application of Venenum bufonis for osteosarcoma inhibition, with its mechanism of action. Materials and Methods: SRB assay was used to determine the effect of Venenum bufonis ethanol extract on U2OS cell line activity, and to detect its inhibitory dose-effect on osteosarcoma cells. FCM was applied to determine the effect of Venenum bufonis ethanol extract on U2OS cell apoptosis and to perform cell cycle analysis. Results: As results, different Venenum bufonis ethanol extracts showed apparent concentration-effect relationships on U2OS cell lines. FCM analysis showed that it had a U2OS apoptosis promoting effect, which increased with increasing concentration. Cell cycle analysis revealed that the Venenum bufonis ethanol extract mainly arrested U2OS in the G0/G1 phase, preventing the cells from progressing to the S phase. Conclusion: The study concluded that Venenum bufonis ethanol extract has an inhibitory effect on proliferation of osteosarcoma U2OS cells

    Characteristics of vegetation carbon sink carrying capacity and restoration potential of China in recent 40 years

    Improving vegetation carbon sink is a key measure for China to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. However, the gradual saturation of vegetation carbon fixation under the constraints of climate change and human activities has limited the long-term and sustainable growth of vegetation carbon sinks, resulting in significant uncertainty in understanding future carbon sink capacity and recovery potential. In this study, NPP has been selected as a carbon sink indicator to quantitatively evaluated the carbon sink carrying capacity (CSCC) and the carbon sink resilience (CSR) of China. Results demonstrated that (1) the NPP of vegetation cover areas in China exhibited an increasing trend from 1981 to 2018, with an average growth rate of 1.66ā€‰g C māˆ’2 yr.āˆ’1 and a total net NPP increase of 0.32 P g C. (2) The average CSCC in China was 658.59 g C māˆ’2 yr.āˆ’1, with a total amount of 4.13 Pg C yr.āˆ’1. The NPP exceeded 60% of CSCC in various years, and the total NPP in 2018 was 3.26 Pg C yr.āˆ’1, which reached 78.74% of CSCC. In the future, carbon sink that can be increased is 0.88 Pg C yr.āˆ’1, with an increase proportion of 21.26%. (3) From 2000 to 2018, the NPP of vegetation-covered area (VCA) in China had generally maintained a positive succession trend with the stronger CSR. Only four provinces (HUN, CQ, AH, and JS) in China showed the extremely strong levels of CSR. The study has revealed the huge and sustainable CSCC and restoration potential in China over the past 40 years, and has provided spatial positioning and theoretical guidance for future ecological carbon sink restoration and benefit assessment

    Ensuring mitochondrial quality is essential for maintaining neuronal homeostasis, and mitochondrial transport plays a vital role in mitochondrial quality control. In this review, we first provide an overview of neuronal mitochondrial transport, followed by a detailed description of the various motors and adaptors associated with the anterograde and retrograde transport of mitochondria. Subsequently, we review the modest evidence involving mitochondrial transport mechanisms that has surfaced in acute neurological disorders, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, and ischemic stroke. An in-depth study of this area will help deepen our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the development of various acute neurological disorders and ultimately improve therapeutic options
