Nonlinear optics and light localization in periodic photonic lattices
We review the recent developments in the field of photonic lattices
emphasizing their unique properties for controlling linear and nonlinear
propagation of light. We draw some important links between optical lattices and
photonic crystals pointing towards practical applications in optical

Power dependent switching of nonlinear trapping by local photonic potentials
We study experimentally and numerically the nonlinear scattering of wave
packets by local multi-site guiding centers embedded in a continuous dielectric
medium, as a function of the input power and angle of incidence. The extent of
trapping into the linear modes of different sites is manipulated as a function
of both the input power and incidence angle, demonstrating power-controlled
switching of nonlinear trapping by local photonic potentials.Comment: Submitted to Optics Letter
Non-bee insects are important contributors to global crop pollination
Wild andmanaged bees arewell documented as effective pollinators of global crops of economic importance. However, the contributions by pollinators other than bees have been little explored despite their potential to contribute to crop production and stability in the face of environmental change. Non-bee pollinators include flies, beetles, moths, butterflies, wasps, ants, birds, and bats, among others. Here we focus on non-bee insects and synthesize 39 field studies from five continents that directly measured the crop pollination services provided by non-bees, honey bees, and other bees to compare the relative contributions of these taxa. Non-bees performed 25-50% of the total number of flower visits. Although non-bees were less effective pollinators than bees per flower visit, they made more visits; thus these two factors compensated for each other, resulting in pollination services rendered by non-bees that were similar to those provided by bees. In the subset of studies that measured fruit set, fruit set increased with non-bee insect visits independently of bee visitation rates, indicating that non-bee insects provide a unique benefit that is not provided by bees. We also show that non-bee insects are not as reliant as bees on the presence of remnant natural or seminatural habitat in the surrounding landscape. These results strongly suggest that non-bee insect pollinators play a significant role in global crop production and respond differently than bees to landscape structure, probably making their crop pollination services more robust to changes in land use. Characterization factors to assess land use impacts on pollinator abundance in life cycle assessment
While wild pollinators play a key role in global food production, their assessment is currently missing from the most commonly used environmental impact assessment method, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This is mainly due to constraints in data availability and compatibility with LCA inventories. To target this gap, relative pollinator abundance estimates were obtained with the use of a Delphi assessment, during which 25 experts, covering 16 nationalities and 45 countries of expertise, provided scores for low, typical, and high expected abundance associated with 24 land use categories. Based on these estimates, this study presents a set of globally generic characterization factors (CFs) that allows translating land use into relative impacts to wild pollinator abundance. The associated uncertainty of the CFs is presented along with an illustrative case to demonstrate the applicability in LCA studies. The CFs based on estimates that reached consensus during the Delphi assessment are recommended as readily applicable and allow key differences among land use types to be distinguished. The resulting CFs are proposed as the first step for incorporating pollinator impacts in LCA studies, exemplifying the use of expert elicitation methods as a useful tool to fill data gaps that constrain the characterization of key environmental impacts.Industrial EcologyEnvironmental Biolog
Overview of cattle diseases listed under category C, D or E in the animal health law for wich control programmes are in place within Europe

diseases of cattle in the European Union (SOUND control),” aims to harmonise the results
of surveillance and control programmes (CPs) for non-EU regulated cattle diseases to
facilitate safe trade and improve overall control of cattle infectious diseases. In this paper
we aimed to provide an overview on the diversity of control for these diseases in Europe.
A non-EU regulated cattle disease was defined as an infectious disease of cattle with no
or limited control at EU level, which is not included in the European Union Animal health
law Categories A or B under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2002.
A CP was defined as surveillance and/or intervention strategies designed to lower the
incidence, prevalence, mortality or prove freedom from a specific disease in a region
or country. Passive surveillance, and active surveillance of breeding bulls under Council
Directive 88/407/EEC were not considered as CPs. A questionnaire was designed to
obtain country-specific information about CPs for each disease. Animal health experts
from 33 European countries completed the questionnaire. Overall, there are 23 diseases
for which a CP exists in one or more of the countries studied. The diseases for which
CPs exist in the highest number of countries are enzootic bovine leukosis, bluetongue,
infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine viral diarrhoea and anthrax (CPs reported by
between 16 and 31 countries). Every participating country has on average, 6 CPs
(min–max: 1–13) in place. Most programmes are implemented at a national level (86%)
and are applied to both dairy and non-dairy cattle (75%). Approximately one-third
of the CPs are voluntary, and the funding structure is divided between government
and private resources. Countries that have eradicated diseases like enzootic bovine
leukosis, bluetongue, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and bovine viral diarrhoea have
implemented CPs for other diseases to further improve the health status of cattle in their
country. The control of non-EU regulated cattle diseases is very heterogenous in Europe.
Therefore, the standardising of the outputs of these programmes to enable comparison

Risks to pollinators and pollination from invasive alien species
Invasive alien species modify pollinator biodiversity and the services they provide that underpin ecosystem function and human well-being. Building on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) global assessment of pollinators and pollination, we synthesize current understanding of invasive alien impacts on pollinators and pollination. Invasive alien species create risks and opportunities for pollinator nutrition, re-organize species interactions to affect native pollination and community stability, and spread and select for virulent diseases. Risks are complex but substantial, and depend greatly on the ecological function and evolutionary history of both the invader and the recipient ecosystem. We highlight evolutionary implications for pollination from invasive alien species, and identify future research directions, key messages and options for decision-making

Hence, there has been increased interest in how global change drivers impact this critical ecosystem service. Because standardized data on crop pollination are rarely available, we are limited in our capacity to understand the variation in pollination benefits to crop yield, as well as to anticipate changes in this service, develop predictions, and inform management actions. Here, we present CropPol, a dynamic, open and global database on crop pollination. It contains measurements recorded from 202 crop studies, covering 3,394 field observations, 2,552 yield measurements (i.e. berry weight, number of fruits and kg per hectare, among others), and 47,752 insect records from 48 commercial crops distributed around the globe. CropPol comprises 32 of the 87 leading global crops and commodities that are pollinator dependent. Malus domestica is the most represented crop (32 studies), followed by Brassica napus (22 studies), Vaccinium corymbosum (13 studies), and Citrullus lanatus (12 studies). The most abundant pollinator guilds recorded are honey bees (34.22% counts), bumblebees (19.19%), flies other than Syrphidae and Bombyliidae (13.18%), other wild bees (13.13%), beetles (10.97%), Syrphidae (4.87%), and Bombyliidae (0.05%). Locations comprise 34 countries distributed among Europe (76 studies), Northern America (60), Latin America and the Caribbean (29), Asia (20), Oceania (10), and Africa (7). Sampling spans three decades and is concentrated on 2001-05 (21 studies), 2006-10 (40), 2011-15 (88), and 2016-20 (50). This is the most comprehensive open global data set on measurements of crop flower visitors, crop pollinators and pollination to date, and we encourage researchers to add more datasets to this database in the future. This data set is released for non-commercial use only. Gap solitons in waveguide arrays
Bright and dark spatial gap solitons are demonstrated in waveguide arrays. These gap solitons travel across the array at zero transverse velocity, in complete analogy with stationary (immobile) temporal gap solitons. Furthermore, the launching configuration for observing these stationary gap solitons is shown to be the analog of an “ideal experiment” for observing stationary temporal gap solitons, never observed so far. A clear distinction is established between the family of Floquet-Bloch solitons in general and discrete solitons in particular, and the limiting case of gap solitons
