    The Relationship Between Leadership Behavior of Academic Deans in Public Universities and Job Satisfaction of Department Chairpersons

    The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceptions of academic deans and department chairpersons regarding the leadership behavior of deans; and, to determine the relationship between perceived leadership behavior of deans and job satisfaction of department chairpersons in the public institutions of higher education. The study involved a random sample of 50 academic deans and 285 department chairpersons at public universities in Tennessee. Testing of five null hypotheses was based upon responses of 42 academic deans (84%) and 173 department chairpersons (60%). The Leadership behavior of academic deans was measured by the Leadership Practices Inventory (Kouzes & Posner, 1987). The job satisfaction of department chairpersons was determined through the Index of Job Satisfaction. A combination of means difference tests and correlational methods was used to answer questions concerning the relationship between leadership behavior of academic deans and job satisfaction of department chairpersons. Of the five null hypotheses tested, two were found to be significant at the level of.05. The conclusions drawn from the rejected hypotheses were: There was a significant difference between deans and department chairpersons in the perception of leadership behavior of deans. The overall mean score of LPI-Self was significantly higher than that of LPI-Other. The deans perceived their leadership behavior, as described in LPI, to be more effective than did department chairpersons. In addition, there was a significant relationship between the leadership behavior of deans perceived by department chairpersons and their job satisfaction. The more effective the department chairpersons perceived the deans\u27 leadership behavior to be, the more they were satisfied with their jobs. Finally, the total number of years in the department chairpersons\u27 position had a significant impact on how they perceived deans\u27 leadership behavior. Department chairpersons in the position for a total of less than a year perceived deans\u27 leader behavior as more effective than those who had been in the position for 7-9 years

    Properties of weighted complex networks

    We study two kinds of weighted networks, weighted small-world (WSW) and weighted scale-free (WSF). The weight wijw_{ij} of a link between nodes ii and jj in the network is defined as the product of endpoint node degrees; that is wij=(kikj)θw_{ij}=(k_{i}k_{j})^{\theta}. In contrast to adding weights to links during networks being constructed, we only consider weights depending on the `` popularity\rq\rq of the nodes represented by their connectivity. It was found that the both weighted networks have broad distributions on characterization the link weight, vertex strength, and average shortest path length. Furthermore, as a survey of the model, the epidemic spreading process in both weighted networks was studied based on the standard \emph{susceptible-infected} (SI) model. The spreading velocity reaches a peak very quickly after the infection outbreaks and an exponential decay was found in the long time propagation.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    A comparative study of iron and temperature interactive effects on diatoms and Phaeocystis antarctica from the Ross Sea, Antarctica

    In the future, temperature and iron availability are predicted to change in the coastal polynyas of Antarctica, which are the most biologically productive regions of the Southern Ocean. We examined the individual and combined effects of iron addition (+500 nM) and temperature increase (4°C) on Phaeocystis antarctica and several dominant diatom species isolated from the McMurdo Sound sector of the Ross Sea. Iron addition increased growth, carbon fixation, iron uptake rates, cellular carbon quota, and cell size of almost all tested species, while temperature increase only affected certain species. Concurrent increases in temperature and iron synergistically stimulated the growth rates of some species, particularly Pseudo-nitzschia subcurvata. The diversified responses of these phytoplankton to iron and temperature may help explain the current spatial and temporal distributions of diatoms and prymnesiophytes in the Ross Sea. In the future, potential temperature and iron increases may promote the growth of the diatoms Chaetoceros sp., Fragilariopsis cylindrus, and especially P. subcurvata. In contrast, growth rates of P. antarctica did not increase at higher temperatures, suggesting that a shift in community composition toward diatoms may occur under warmer conditions in this biologically and biogeochemically important Southern Ocean polynya region

    Transitions To the Long-Resident State in coupled chaotic oscillators

    The behaviors of coupled chaotic oscillators before complete synchronization were investigated. We report three phenomena: (1) The emergence of long-time residence of trajectories besides one of the saddle foci; (2) The tendency that orbits of the two oscillators get close becomes faster with increasing the coupling strength; (3) The diffusion of two oscillator's phase difference is first enhanced and then suppressed. There are exact correspondences among these phenomena. The mechanism of these correspondences is explored. These phenomena uncover the route to synchronization of coupled chaotic oscillators.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure

    A Novel Multi-Color Feature Selection Method for Person Re-identification

    In this paper, a novel multi-color feature selection method is proposed for person re-identification. Firstly, multi-color features, which consisting of HSV, LAB, RGB and nRnG color features, were extracted and concatenated into a whole feature vector. Then the D-optimal Partial Least Squares feature selection method was adopted to select an optimal feature subset that could minimize the variance of the regression model. Finally, an asymmetric distance model for similarity matching was utilized to observe distinctive features from a different perspective. Experimental results show that rank 1 performance of the proposed method were 48.67%, 63.12% and 65.04% respectively on the VIPeR, Prid_450s and CUHK01 databases, which have achieved state-of-art performances

    Superconductivity up to 30 K in the vicinity of quantum critical point in BaFe2_{2}(As1−x_{1-x}Px_{x})2_{2}

    We report bulk superconductivity induced by an isovalent doping of phosphorus in BaFe2_{2}(As1−x_{1-x}Px_{x})2_{2}. The P-for-As substitution results in shrinkage of lattice, especially for the FeAs block layers. The resistivity anomaly associated with the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the undoped compound is gradually suppressed by the P doping. Superconductivity with the maximum TcT_c of 30 K emerges at xx=0.32, coinciding with a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) which is evidenced by the disappearance of SDW order and the linear temperature-dependent resistivity in the normal state. The TcT_c values were found to decrease with further P doping, and no superconductivity was observed down to 2 K for x≥x\geq 0.77. The appearance of superconductivity in the vicinity of QCP hints to the superconductivity mechanism in iron-based arsenides.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; more data; to appear in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matte

    Nine strains among 180 Streptomyces isolates produce a diffusible dark brown pigment on both peptone-yeast extract agar and synthetic tyrosine-agar. They also show the positive reaction to Ltyrosine or L-dopa substrates. The pigment has been referred to be as merely as dark brown watersolublepigment, as melanoid or melanin. The different carbon and nitrogen sources which influence the pigment production in the Streptomyces isolates were also investigated, and the carotenoid content in the pigment was analyzed.
