Non-Kramers Freezing and Unfreezing of Tunneling in the Biaxial Spin Model
The ground state tunnel splitting for the biaxial spin model in the magnetic
field, H = -D S_{x}^2 + E S_{z}^2 - g \mu_B S_z H_z, has been investigated
using an instanton approach. We find a new type of spin instanton and a new
quantum interference phenomenon associated with it: at a certain field, H_2 =
2SE^{1/2}(D+E)^{1/2}/(g \mu_B), the dependence of the tunneling splitting on
the field switches from oscillations to a monotonic growth. The predictions of
the theory can be tested in Fe_8 molecular nanomagnets.Comment: 7 pages, minor changes, published in EP

Evaluation of a personalized digital library based on cognitive styles: Adaptivity vs. adaptability
Personalization can be addressed by adaptability and adaptivity, which have different advantages and disadvantages. This study investigates how digital library users react to these two techniques. More specifically, we develop a
personalized digital library to suit the needs of different cognitive styles based on the findings of our previous work (Frias-Martinez, et al., in press). The personalized digital library includes two versions: adaptive version and
adaptable version. The results showed that users not only performed better in the adaptive version, but also they perceived more positively to the adaptive version. In addition, cognitive styles have great effects on users’ responses
to adaptability and adaptivity. These results provide guidance for designers to select suitable techniques to develop personalized digital libraries
Survey of data mining approaches to user modeling for adaptive hypermedia
The ability of an adaptive hypermedia system to create tailored environments depends mainly on the amount and accuracy of information stored in each user model. Some of the difficulties that user modeling faces are the amount of data available to create user models, the adequacy of the data, the noise within that data, and the necessity of capturing the imprecise nature of human behavior. Data mining and machine learning techniques have the ability to handle large amounts of data and to process uncertainty. These characteristics make these techniques suitable for automatic generation of user models that simulate human decision making. This paper surveys different data mining techniques that can be used to efficiently and accurately capture user behavior. The role of human factors in stereotyping behavior and perception of digital library users: A robust clustering approach
To deliver effective personalization for digital library users, it is necessary to identify which human factors are most relevant in determining the behavior and perception of these users. This paper examines three key human factors: cognitive styles, levels of expertise and gender differences, and utilizes three individual clustering techniques: k-means, hierarchical clustering and fuzzy clustering to understand user behavior and perception. Moreover, robust clustering, capable of correcting the bias of individual clustering techniques, is used to obtain a deeper understanding. The robust clustering approach produced results that highlighted the relevance of cognitive style for user behavior, i.e., cognitive style dominates and justifies each of the robust clusters created. We also found that perception was mainly determined by the level of expertise of a user. We conclude that robust clustering is an effective technique to analyze user behavior and perception
Stationary processes whose filtrations are standard
We study the standard property of the natural filtration associated to a 0--1
valued stationary process. In our main result we show that if the process has
summable memory decay, then the associated filtration is standard. We prove it
by coupling techniques. For a process whose associated filtration is standard,
we construct a product type filtration extending it, based upon the usual

Lessons Learned: Can a Principled Mechanism for Improving Health Equity be Integrated into a Budgetary Process?
Health equity is the social justice lens that public health institutions across the United States have increasingly embraced as a mandate, however there are few jurisdictions addressing how to prioritize funding toward that end. The practical translation of a social justice concept necessitates the creation of a budgetary tool and an implementation process that identifies those with the highest levels of health disparity and social disadvantage.
Using the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) as its central case, this paper argues that for health delivery systems to be socially just and to achieve health equity, these systems must not only establish the principle that health equity is important, they must prioritize their funding to achieve it. The broad public health mission to protect and promote the health of all will create ethical and methodological challenges when it comes to prioritizing one group’s needs over others.
This paper addresses the first steps toward creating a budget prioritization method that is feasible for managers to administer while also being transparent to the public, summarizes lessons learned, and discusses ethical dilemmas that jurisdictions will face when implementing health equity into a budgetary process
The impact of cultural dissonance and acculturation orientations on immigrant students' academic performance

performance of immigrant and native students. Multicultural education has been
associated with academic failure of foreign students. e aim of this study was to examine
the impact of a set of psychosocial variables on the perceived academic achievement
of first generation immigrant adolescents from public secondary schools in Northern
Spain. Results showed that 46% of the variability in foreign students’ perceived academic
performance was explained by home-school cultural dissonance. We also explored the
impact of acculturation orientation to separation, perception of discrimination from
teachers, school adjustment, and psychological well-being in academic performance.
Any multicultural education context should take into account psychosocial adjustment,
given its influence on academic performance of all studentsSe han hallado diferencias significativas entre el rendimiento académico de
los inmigrantes y el de los estudiantes nativos. Sin embargo, hay una escasa evidencia
acerca de los aspectos psicosociales de este fenómeno. El objetivo de este estudio fue
examinar el impacto de un conjunto de variables psicosociales: disonancia cultural y
orientaciones de aculturación en el rendimiento académico percibido de adolescentes
inmigrantes de primera generación de centros de Educación Secundaria en el Norte
de España. Los resultados mostraron que alrededor del 46% de la variabilidad en el
rendimiento era explicada por la disonancia cultural entre escuela y hogar. Cualquier
contexto de educación multicultural ha de tomar en consideración el ajuste psicosocial,
