    Types and correlates of school non-attendance in students with autism spectrum disorders

    School non-attendance in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has received very little attention to date. The study aimed to provide a comprehensive description of school non-attendance in students with ASD. Through an online survey, parents of 486 children (mean age 11 years) reported on school attendance over one month, and reasons for instances of non-attendance. On average, students missed five days of school of a possible 23 days. Persistent non-attendance (absent on 10%+ of available sessions) occurred among 43% of students. School non-attendance was associated with child older age, not living in a two-parent household, parental unemployment and, especially, attending a mainstream school. School refusal accounted for 43% of non-attendance. School exclusion and school withdrawal each accounted for 9% of absences. Truancy was almost non-existent. Non-problematic absenteeism (mostly related to medical appointments and illness) accounted for 32% of absences. Non-problematic absenteeism was more likely among those with intellectual disability, school refusal was more likely among older students, and school exclusion was more likely among students from single-parent, unemployed, and well educated households. Findings suggest school non-attendance in ASD is a significant issue, and that it is important to capture detail about attendance patterns and reasons for school non-attendance

    Who cooks from scratch and how do they prepare food

    Purpose – There is increasing interest in the domestic preparation of food and with the postulated health benefits of “cooking from scratch”. The purpose of this paper is to examine the demographic and food preparation associations of this term in order to examine its operational value. Design/methodology/approach – A national online survey was conducted during 2012 in Australia among 1,023 domestic food providers, half of whom were men. Questions were asked about cooking from scratch, demographic characteristics, food preparation practices and interest in learning about cooking. Findings – Three quarters of the sample reported they often or always “cooked from scratch” (CFS). More women than men always CFS; fewer 18-29 year olds did so often or always but more of the over 50s always did so; fewer single people CFS than cohabiting people. No statistically significant ethnic, educational background or household income differences were found. High levels of cooking from scratch were associated with interest in learning more about cooking, greater use of most cooking techniques (except microwaves), meat and legume preparation techniques, and the use of broader ranges of herbs, spice, liquids/ sauces, other ingredients and cooking utensils. Research limitations/implications – In future work a numerical description of the frequency of cooking from scratch should be considered along with a wider range of response options. The data were derived from an online panel from which men were oversampled. Caution is required in comparisons between men and women respondents. The cross-sectional nature of the sample prevents any causal attributions from being drawn from the observed relationships. Further replication of the findings, especially the lack of association with educational background should be conducted. Originality/value – This is the first study to examine the associations of demographic characteristics and cooking practices with cooking from scratch. The findings suggest that cooking from scratch is common among Australian family food providers and signifies interest in learning about cooking and involvement in a wide range of cooking techniques

    A case report on the physiological responses to extreme heat during Sicily's July 2023 heatwave

    July 2023 has been confirmed as Earth's hottest month on record, and it was characterized by extraordinary heatwaves across southern Europe. Field data collected under real heatwave periods could add important evidence to understand human adaptability to extreme heat. However, field studies on human physiological responses to heatwave periods remain limited. We performed field thermo-physiological measurements in a healthy 37-years male undergoing resting and physical activity in an outdoor environment in the capital of Sicily, Palermo, during (July 21; highest level of local heat-health alert) and following (August 10; lowest level of local heat-health alert) the peak of Sicily's July 2023 heatwave. Results indicated that ~40 min of outdoor walking and light running in 33.8°C Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) conditions (July 21) resulted in significant physiological stress (i.e., peak heart rate: 209 bpm; core temperature: 39.13°C; mean skin temperature: 37.2°C; whole-body sweat losses: 1.7 kg). Importantly, significant physiological stress was also observed during less severe heat conditions (August 10; WBGT: 29.1°C; peak heart rate: 190 bpm; core temperature: 38.48°C; whole-body sweat losses: 2 kg). These observations highlight the physiological strain that current heatwave conditions pose on healthy young individuals. This ecologically-valid empirical evidence could inform more accurate heat-health planning

    Factors influencing fruit and vegetable intake among urban Fijians: A qualitative study.

    Low fruit and vegetable intake is an important risk factor for micronutrient deficiencies and non-communicable diseases, but many people worldwide, including most Fijians, eat less than the World Health Organization recommended amount. The present qualitative study explores factors that influence fruit and vegetable intake among 57 urban Fijians (50 women, 7 men) of indigenous Fijian (iTaukei) and South Asian (Indian) descent. Eight focus group discussions were held in and around Suva, Fiji's capital and largest urban area, which explored motivation for eating fruit and vegetables, understandings of links to health and disease, availability and sources, determinants of product choice, and preferred ways of preparing and eating fruit and vegetables. Data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Regardless of ethnicity, participants indicated that they enjoyed and valued eating fruit and vegetables, were aware of the health benefits, and had confidence in their cooking skills. In both cultures, fruit and vegetables were essential components of traditional diets. However, increasing preferences for processed and imported foods, and inconsistent availability and affordability of high-quality, low-priced, fresh produce, were identified as important barriers.     Cutaneous thermosensory mapping of the female breast and pelvis

    Differences in skin thermal sensitivity have been extensively mapped across areas of the human body, including the torso, limbs, and extremities. Yet, there are parts of the female body, such as the breast and the pelvis for which we have limited thermal sensitivity data. The aim of this study was to map cutaneous warm and cold sensitivity across skin areas of the breast and pelvis that are commonly covered by female underwear. Twelve young females (21.9 ± 3.2 years) reported on a 200 mm visual analogue scale the perceived magnitude of local thermal sensations arising from short-duration (10 s) static application of a cold [5 °C below local skin temperature (Tsk)] or warm (5 °C above local Tsk) thermal probe (25 cm2) in seventeen locations over the breast and pelvis regions. The data revealed that thermal sensitivity to the warm probe, but not the cold probe, varied by up to 25% across the breast [mean difference between lowest and highest sensitivity location was 51 mm (95% CI:14, 89; p < 0.001)] and up to 23% across the pelvis [mean difference between lowest and highest sensitivity location: 46 mm (95% CI:9, 84; p = 0.001)]. The regional differences in baseline Tsk did not account for variance in warm thermal sensitivity. Inter-individual variability in thermal sensitivity ranged between 24 and 101% depending on skin location. We conclude that the skin across the female breast and pelvis presents a heterogenous distribution of warm, but not cold, thermal sensitivity. These findings may inform the design of more comfortable clothing that are mapped to the thermal needs of the female body

    The Palermo Swift-BAT Hard X-ray Catalogue. II- Results after 39 months of sky survey

    We present the Palermo Swift-BAT hard X-ray catalogue obtained from the analysis of the the data relative to the first 39 months of the Swift mission. We have developed a dedicated software to perform data reduction, mosaicking and source detection on the BAT survey data. We analyzed the BAT dataset in three energy bands (14-150 keV, 14-30 keV, 14-70 keV), obtaining a list of 962 detections above a significance threshold of 4.8 standard deviations. The identification of the source counterparts was pursued using three strategies: cross-correlation with published hard X-ray catalogues, analysis of field observations of soft X-ray instruments, cross-correlation with the SIMBAD databases. The survey covers 90% of the sky down to a flux limit of 2.5x10E-11 erg/cm2/s and 50% of the sky down to a flux limit of 1.8x10E-11 erg/cm2/s in the 14-150 keV band. We derived a catalogue of 754 identified sources, of which ~69% are extragalactic, ~27% are Galactic objects, ~4% are already known X-ray or gamma ray emitters whose nature has not been determined yet. The integrated flux of the extragalactic sample is ~1% of the Cosmic X-ray background in the 14-150 keV range.Comment: Final version for pubblication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 24 pages, 11 figures and 2 tables.     Bayesian Blocks, A New Method to Analyze Structure in Photon Counting Data

    I describe a new time-domain algorithm for detecting localized structures (bursts), revealing pulse shapes, and generally characterizing intensity variations. The input is raw counting data, in any of three forms: time-tagged photon events (TTE), binned counts, or time-to-spill (TTS) data. The output is the most likely segmentation of the observation into time intervals during which the photon arrival rate is perceptibly constant -- i.e. has a fixed intensity without statistically significant variations. Since the analysis is based on Bayesian statistics, I call the resulting structures Bayesian Blocks. Unlike most, this method does not stipulate time bins -- instead the data themselves determine a piecewise constant representation. Therefore the analysis procedure itself does not impose a lower limit to the time scale on which variability can be detected. Locations, amplitudes, and rise and decay times of pulses within a time series can be estimated, independent of any pulse-shape model -- but only if they do not overlap too much, as deconvolution is not incorporated. The Bayesian Blocks method is demonstrated by analyzing pulse structure in BATSE Îł\gamma-ray data.     Risk profiling and efficacy of albendazole against the hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum in Cambodia to support control programs in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific

    Background: Hookworm disease is endemic throughout many parts of the Asia Pacific, despite targeted control programs of at-risk populations. The success of these programs has been hindered by the limited efficacy of widely-used mebendazole, rapid re-infection rates linked to persistent reservoirs of untreated people and dogs, and the low sensitivity of conventional coprodiagnostic techniques employed. Methods: Here, we used standard faecal flotation (SFF) and a multiplex qPCR (mqPCR) assay to calculate and compare species-specific cure and egg reduction rates of single dose albendazole (400 mg) against hookworm infections at community level. Data from a cross-sectional survey in 1,232 people from Cambodia were used to inform a generalised linear mixed model to identify risk factors linked to hookworm infection(s) at baseline. Furthermore, we calculated risk factors associated to the probability of being cured after albendazole administration. Findings: Overall, 13.5% of all 1,232 people tested by SFF were positive for hookworm infection(s). Most (80.1%) infected people were >12 years of age, hence above the age targeted by the WHO control program. We estimate that as age increases, the odds of being infected increases at a faster rate for females than for males. We revealed a substantial difference in cure rate of hookworm infection(s) following albendazole treatment using the SFF (81.5%) and mqPCR (46.4%) assays, and provide the first data on the efficacy of this drug against the zoonotic hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum. We estimated that as age increases by one year, the odds of being cured decreases by 0.4%-3.7%. Similarly, the odds of being cured for people who boiled drinking water was estimated to be between 1.02 and 6.82. Interpretation: These findings show that the adoption of refined diagnostic techniques is central to monitoring hookworm infection(s) and the success of control strategies, which can ultimately aid in reducing associated morbidity in human populations. The approach taken is likely to be directly applicable to other parts of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific, where specific epidemiological conditions might hamper the success of targeted treatment programs.
