    Leveraging Multi-User Diversity, Channel Diversity and Spatial Reuse for Efficient Scheduling in Wireless Relay Networks

    Relay stations can be deployed in a wireless network to extend its coverage and improve its capacity. In this paper, we study a scheduling problem in OFDMA-based wireless relay networks with consideration for multi-user diversity, channel diversity and spatial reuse. First, we present a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation to provide optimum solutions. It has been shown by previous research that performance of a wireless scheduling algorithm is usually related to the interference degree δ, which is the maximum number of links that interfere with a common link but do not interfere with each other. Therefore, we then show that the interference degree δ is at most 4 for any 2-hop relay network and 14 for any general h-hop (h \u3e=2) relay network. Furthermore, we present a simple greedy algorithm for the scheduling problem and show it has an approximation ratio of 1/(1+δ), which leads to an approximation ratio of 1/5 for the 2-hop case and 1/15 for the general case. In addition, we present three heuristic algorithms, namely, the weighted degree greedy algorithm, the Maximum Weighted Independent Set (MWIS) algorithm and the Linear Programming (LP) rounding algorithm, to solve the scheduling problem. Extensive simulation results have showed that the LP rounding algorithm performs best and always provides close-to-optimum solutions. The performance of the simple greedy algorithm is comparable to that of the other algorithms

    Consistent low-energy reduction of the three-band model for copper oxides with O-O hopping to the effective t-J model

    A full three-band model for the CuO2_{2} plane with inclusion of all essential interactions - Cu-O and O-O hopping, repulsion at the copper and oxygen and between them - is considered. A general procedure of the low-energy reduction of the primary Hamiltonian to the Hamiltonian of the generalized tt-t′t'-JJ model is developed. An important role of the direct O-O hopping is discussed. Parameters of the effective low-energy model (the hopping integral, the band position and the superexchange constant JJ are calculated. An analysis of the obtained data shows that the experimental value of JJ fixes the charge transfer energy Δ=(ϵp−ϵd)\Delta =(\epsilon_{p}-\epsilon_{d}) in a narrow region of energies.Comment: 32 pp. (LATEX), two figures (PostScript) appende

    Flat band magnetism and helical magnetic order in Ni-doped SrCo2_2As2_2

    A series of Sr(Co1−x_{1-x}Nix_x)2_2As2_2 single crystals was synthesized allowing a comprehensive phase diagram with respect to field, temperature, and chemical substitution to be established. Our neutron diffraction experiments revealed a helimagnetic order with magnetic moments ferromagnetically (FM) aligned in the abab plane and a helimagnetic wavevector of q=(0,0,0.56)q=(0,0,0.56) for xx = 0.1. The combination of neutron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that the tuning of a flat band with dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2} orbital character drives the helimagnetism and indicates the possibility of a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures, Supplementary Material available upon request, accepted by Phys.     Wheat bran valorisation: Towards photocatalytic nanomaterials for benzyl alcohol photo-oxidation

    In this work, we have successfully synthesized a set of titania photocatalytic nanocomposites by the incorporation of different TiO2 content on wheat bran residues. The obtained catalysts were characterized by different techniques including UVeVis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) while their photocatalytic activity was investigated in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol under UV light irradiation. Benzaldehyde yields were ca. 20%, with conversion in the systems of ca. 33% of benzyl alcohol by using 10%Ti-Bran catalyst, as compared to 33% yield to the target product (quantitative conversion of benzyl alcohol) using commercial pure TiO2 (P-25). The photocatalytic activity results indicate that designed waste-derived nanomaterials with low TiO2 content can efficiently photocatalyze the conversion of benzyl alcohol with relative high selectivity towards benzaldehyde

    Background Previous studies have shown that individuals with schizophrenia have a greater risk for psoriasis than a typical person. This suggests that there might be a shared genetic etiology between the 2 conditions. We aimed to characterize the potential shared genetic susceptibility between schizophrenia and psoriasis using genome-wide marker genotype data. Methods We obtained genetic data on individuals with psoriasis, schizophrenia and control individuals. We applied a marker-based coheritability estimation procedure, polygenic score analysis, a gene set enrichment test and a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression model to estimate the potential shared genetic etiology between the 2 diseases. We validated the results in independent schizophrenia and psoriasis cohorts from Singapore. Results We included 1139 individuals with psoriasis, 744 with schizophrenia and 1678 controls in our analysis, and we validated the results in independent cohorts, including 441 individuals with psoriasis (and 2420 controls) and 1630 with schizophrenia (and 1860 controls). We estimated that a large fraction of schizophrenia and psoriasis risk could be attributed to common variants (h(SNP)(2) = 29% 5.0%, p = 2.00 x 10(-8)), with a coheritability estimate between the traits of 21%. We identified 5 variants within the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) gene region, which were most likely to be associated with both diseases and collectively conferred a significant risk effect (odds ratio of highest risk quartile = 6.03, p < 2.00 x 10(-16)). We discovered that variants contributing most to the shared heritable component between psoriasis and schizophrenia were enriched in antigen processing and cell endoplasmic reticulum. Limitations Our sample size was relatively small. The findings of 5 HLA gene variants were complicated by the complex structure in the HLA region. Conclusion We found evidence for a shared genetic etiology between schizophrenia and psoriasis.     Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
