Correlation of Pleistocene sediments from boreholes in the Ludwigshafen area, western Heidelberg Basin
Thermal analysis of the ceramic material and evaluation of the bonding behavior of silicon-ceramic composite substrates
Abstract Thermal bonding of silicon and low-temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC) at sintering temperatures of 900 ° C represents currently the standard process in silicon-ceramic composite (SiCer) substrate fabrication. We analyse the thermal behavior of the LTCC using thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and laser flash analysis. The thermal decomposition could be identified with a mass loss of 24% in the temperature range up to 1000 ° C what influences the thermal diffusivity with values from about 0.19 mm 2 s â1 before thermal treatment to below 0.10 mm 2 s â1 after thermal treatment. A specific heat capacity of 1 â 2 J (g · K) â1 is calculated. Further, an influence of low-temperature lamination of the LTCC seems to have an influence on the thermal behaviour. The sintering process was investigated with temperatures of 550 ° C, 730 ° C and 900 ° C, applied pressures of 12.2 kPa and 6.1 kPa and intermediate wetting layers of TiO 2 (normal deposition and oblique angle deposition). Optical observations, ultrasonic and scanning electron microscopy, and pull-tests are used to compare the properties of the sintered SiCer substrates. Whereas the sintering temperature has an obvious impact on the sintering behaviour of the LTCC, a direct conclusion of parameter variation on the bonding result was not observed
Astrocytes: biology and pathology
Astrocytes are specialized glial cells that outnumber neurons by over fivefold. They contiguously tile the entire central nervous system (CNS) and exert many essential complex functions in the healthy CNS. Astrocytes respond to all forms of CNS insults through a process referred to as reactive astrogliosis, which has become a pathological hallmark of CNS structural lesions. Substantial progress has been made recently in determining functions and mechanisms of reactive astrogliosis and in identifying roles of astrocytes in CNS disorders and pathologies. A vast molecular arsenal at the disposal of reactive astrocytes is being defined. Transgenic mouse models are dissecting specific aspects of reactive astrocytosis and glial scar formation in vivo. Astrocyte involvement in specific clinicopathological entities is being defined. It is now clear that reactive astrogliosis is not a simple all-or-none phenomenon but is a finely gradated continuum of changes that occur in context-dependent manners regulated by specific signaling events. These changes range from reversible alterations in gene expression and cell hypertrophy with preservation of cellular domains and tissue structure, to long-lasting scar formation with rearrangement of tissue structure. Increasing evidence points towards the potential of reactive astrogliosis to play either primary or contributing roles in CNS disorders via loss of normal astrocyte functions or gain of abnormal effects. This article reviews (1) astrocyte functions in healthy CNS, (2) mechanisms and functions of reactive astrogliosis and glial scar formation, and (3) ways in which reactive astrocytes may cause or contribute to specific CNS disorders and lesions

Abstract: In the Mainz basin at the sandpit at FĂŒrfeld,a 9 m thick sequence of Middle
to Upper Pleistocene fluvial sediments, loess and loess derivatives and two tephras are
exposed. The carbonate-rich loess from below the intercalated Bt horizon of a brown
forest soil yielded IRSLand TL age estimates ranging from 500 to 300 ka. Although the
chronological data is in agreement with the geological age estimates, the reliability of
very old IRSLand TL age estimates is under discussion. However, the luminescence age
estimates and the preliminary geochemical data assume that the two mafic volcanic
ashes belong to the Rieden erupfion phase of the East Eifel volcanic field, which was
active from 450 to about 350 ka. Owing to the regional importance of tephra T2 as a
marker horizon, it is defined as "FĂŒrfelder Tuff" ("FĂŒrfeld Tephra"). The truncated Bt
horizon is covered by loess and reworked loess, designated to represent penultimate
glacial loess. A brown horizon is exposed on top of these Sediments and covered by
reworked loess. The latter one yielded IRSLand TL age estimates indicating an early last
glacial deposition age. The uppermost loess horizons and the intercalated brown horizon
are assumed to represent part of the last Pleniglacial.researc

Wald) and its sub-mountain region (Upper Rhine Graben) an 8 m thick cover of loess,
loess derivates and loessic sand rests on sandstones of the Upper Karlstal-Schichten
(Buntsandstein, Lower Triassic). In a 130 m long sunken road exposure the aeolian cover
sediments are divided by buried palaeosols, namely two Bt horizons of para brown
earths and two humic horizons. Pedostratigraphy and thermoluminescence dating enabled
us to differentiate three glacial-interglacial-cycles. The dating results exclude a last
interglacial age for the upper of the buried Bt horizons, rather it represents the penultimate
interglacial. Faults are visible from this soil to the bottom of the section. We conclude
that the minimum age of tectonic activity at the exposed fault system is Rissian.
Precise levellings across the morphotectonic blocks suggest, however, that uplift of the
Palatinate Forest and its foothills is continuing to the present.1. Einleitung

Rock and palaeomagnetic evidence for the Plio-Pleistocene palaeoclimatic change recorded in Upper Rhine Graben sediments (Core Ludwigshafen-Parkinsel)
In the area of Ludwigshafen (Germany; Upper Rhine Graben (URG); Fig. 1) we sampled a core (P34) which was recovered during the exploration for groundwater resources. The core comprises 300 m of Quaternary and Tertiary sediments (Fig. 2). Rockmagnetic parameters measured are: NRM (natural remanent magnetization); characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM, could be isolated using demagnetization experiments (alternating field and thermal) Fig. 3); magnetic susceptibility measured on core and discrete samples compared with interpretation of polarity (Fig. 5); as demonstrated in figure 6, a clear correlation of heavy mineral data (Hagedorn & Boenigk, 2008; doi:10.1016/j.quascirev.2005.01.018) and susceptibility data is apparent; the so-called S-ratio (Fig. 7a) gives us information about the relative amounts of high-coercivity ('hard') to low-coercivity ('soft') remanence and therefore a fair estimate of the importance of antiferromagnetics (goethite, hematite) versus ferrimagnetics (soft magnetite, iron-sulphides); "saturation"IRM curves (Fig. 7b, c) also show a clear subdivision in soft (above 177 m) and hard (below 177 m) remanence carriers; thermal demagnetization of "S"IRM identifies greigite or (Ti) -magnetite (Fig. 8a) for the upper (alpine influenced) part of the drill whereas the lower Pliocene part is dominated by greigite (Fig. 8b); alternating field (AF) demagnetization of samples from the upper part often show acquisition of significant gyroremanent magnetization (Fig. 10a), a typical property of greigite (Snowball, 1997; doi:10.1111/j.1365-246X.1997.tb04498.x); we used a technique after Van Velzen and Zijderfeld (1992; doi:10.1111/j.1365-246X.1992.tb00715.x) detecting greigite instead of pyrrhotite (Fig. 10b); Combination of different parameters in biplots can help to separate various magnetic components (Fig. 11 a+b). We applied this method by combining anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) and IRM measurements in different ways. ARM against IRM (Fig. 11a) demonstrates high concentration differences for samples from the upper part (above 177 m) of the profile and narrow plotting (low concentration variations) for samples of the lower part (below 177 m); A similar plot, the relation of ARM normalized by IRM and ARM, emphasizes this result (Fig. 11b). Again, two different clusters (high coercivity mineral (goethite) in the lower and low coercivity mineral (greigite) in the upper part of the profile) are obvious (with the exception of some samples in a mixed zone)
Preface: The Heidelberg Basin Drilling Project
Abstract: In the border area of Gutenberg and Wallhausen (Rheinland-Pfalz, SW-Germany),
gravel deposits have been mined for many decades. Nevertheless the genesis and stratigraphic
position of them have not been sufficiently investigated so far. To clarify the bedding conditions,
two sections were studied using sedimentological and stratigraphic methods. In both sections
four superimposed fining-upward cycles (FU 1 to FU 4) and two coarsening-upward cycles (CU
1 and CU 2) are differentiated, which consist of local detritus and are interpreted as alluvial fan
deposits. The formation of the small alluvial fan is interpreted as a consequence of a minor uplift
pulse of the hinterland north of the South HunsrĂŒck fault. Silicretes occur at the CU 1 / CU 2
boundary, which are named Gutenberg bed hereby. In the higher section of FU 2 saprolite pebbles
are present. The two sections are correlated based on their cyclicity, the silicrete layer and the
saprolite gravel beds. By considering lithostratigraphy and paleoclimate, the alluvial fan most
likely formed in the lower Zanclean. The formation of the silicretes is correlated to the middle
Zanclean (4.3 to 4.6 Ma).researc
