    Novel Z2 Topological Metals and Semimetals

    © 2016 American Physical Society.We report two theoretical discoveries for Z2 topological metals and semimetals. It is shown first that any dimensional Z2 Fermi surface is topologically equivalent to a Fermi point. Then the famous conventional no-go theorem, which was merely proven before for Z Fermi points in a periodic system without any discrete symmetry, is generalized so that the total topological charge is zero for all cases. Most remarkably, we find and prove an unconventional strong no-go theorem: all Z2 Fermi points have the same topological charge ΜZ2=1 or 0 for periodic systems.     Modelling of sediment nutrient fluxes for a pulsed organic load

    A sediment model has been developed to simulate the Sediment Oxygen Demand (SOD) and sediment nutrient fluxes after a sudden input of Particulate Organic Matter (POM). Compared with previous sediment models, the main advances are the use of a continuous function to represent the kinetics of POM diagenesis and inclusion of the biomass content in POM diagenesis. Laboratory experiments were also carried out to investigate the SOD dynamics and sediment nutrient fluxes after an input of fish food pellets into the sediment.     Organizing the innovation process : complementarities in innovation networking

    This paper contributes to the developing literature on complementarities in organizational design. We test for the existence of complementarities in the use of external networking between stages of the innovation process in a sample of UK and German manufacturing plants. Our evidence suggests some differences between the UK and Germany in terms of the optimal combination of innovation activities in which to implement external networking. Broadly, there is more evidence of complementarities in the case of Germany, with the exception of the product engineering stage. By contrast, the UK exhibits generally strong evidence of substitutability in external networking in different stages, except between the identification of new products and product design and development stages. These findings suggest that previous studies indicating strong complementarity between internal and external knowledge sources have provided only part of the picture of the strategic dilemmas facing firms

    Withaferin A Suppresses Liver Tumor Growth in a Nude Mouse Model by Downregulation of Cell Signaling Pathway Leading to Invasion and Angiogenesis

    Purpose: To investigate the effect of withaferin A on tumor growth and metastasis in liver in a nude mouse model.Methods: Withaferin A was injected through a portal vein to the orthotopic liver tumor in a nude mice model. Xenogen in vivo imaging system was used to monitor tumor growth and metastasis. The effect of withaferin A on tumor volume, invasive growth pattern, expression of Pyk2, upregulation of BAX/P53, apoptotic signaling and ROCK/IP10/VEGF pathway along with cytoskeletal protein actin projection formation was studied. Tumor/non-tumor margin was examined under electron microscopy. In addition, the direct effect of withaferin A on liver cancer cells and endothelial cells was further investigated.Results: A significant inhibition of tumor growth and lower incidence of lung metastasis was observed after withaferin A treatment. Withaferin A treatment led to a decrease in the incidence of intrahepatic metastasis from 90 (9 of 10) to 10 % (1 of 10, p = 0.041). There was decrease in macrophage infiltration in the liver tumors and vessels. Western blot analysis revealed inhibition of expression of Pyk2, ROCK1 protein and VEGF. Electron microscopy showed tumor vascular endothelial cell damage and significant necrosis of tumor tissues. It also suppressed formation of cytoskeletal protein actin projection involved in cell migration.Conclusion: Withaferin A inhibits liver tumor invasion and angiogenesis by downregulation of cell signalling pathway leading to invasion and angiogenesis.     Spin pump in the presence of a superconducting lead

    We present a theoretical analysis of a spin pump in the presence of a superconducting lead. The spin pump is facilitated by a rotating magnetic field which provides a spin flip mechanism and hence can generate a spin current without an accompanying charge current. Using a nonequilibrium Green's function method, we obtain a general solution of the pumped charge current and spin current in both the adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes. The numerical results for the charge current and spin current are presented as we vary different system parameters such as the gate voltage, the external magnetic field, and the pumping frequency. We find that for a quantum dot with a single resonant level in line with the Fermi energy of the left normal lead, a pure spin current is generated by a rotating magnetic field at any frequency. We have identified two kinds of photon-assisted processes which dominate at low pumping frequencies and high pumping frequencies, respectively.published_or_final_versio

    Oscillatory thermopower of carbon chains: First-principles calculations

    We investigate the thermoelectric transport through carbon chains connected by two Al leads. Using a Landauer-Buttiker-like formula, we calculate the thermopower and thermoconductance of Al-Cn-Al from first principles. We find that the charge transfer plays an important role in the thermoelectric transport. Because of the charge transfer, the thermopower changes sign for even-odd number of carbon atoms. The thermopower and electric conductance as a function of the gate voltage also exhibit oscillatory behaviors with a phase difference of pi/2.published_or_final_versio

    Exploring the "energy-saving personality traits" in the office and household situation: An empirical study

    Behavior-driven energy conservation has been a promising strategy for reducing building energy consumption as well as carbon emissions. With the intention of revealing the impacts of an individual’s personality basis on energy conservation behavioral attitudes and intentions in households and offices, the present study proposes and conducts an experiment in Xi’an, China with two groups for the investigation of such attitudes towards household energy-saving behavior (HESB) and office energy-saving behavior (OESB), respectively. The research adopts structural equation modeling for experiment data analysis. The analysis results suggest that the two personality traits, Agreeableness and Neuroticism, are significantly related to both HESB and OESB attitudes. Especially, agreeable people tend to present stronger energy-saving attitudes, while individuals with higher Neuroticism are less likely to do so. The results indicate that the impacts of these two traits on energy-saving attitude are found to be less influenced by different environment settings. Further, the results find that Extraversion positively influences energy-saving attitude in the office environment, while Openness only significantly works in the household environment. It is hoped that the findings of the present study can provide informative references to energy-saving intervention design as well as further studies on the spillover of pro-environmental behaviors.</jats:p

    Screening of seven microsatellite markers for litter size in Xinong Saanen dairy goat

    Seven microsatellite markers OarAE101, BM1329, OarHH55, BM143, BMS2508, OarAE129 and OarFCB11 closely associated with high reproduction trait in sheep were analyzed for polymorphisms in Xinong Saanen dairy goat. The results indicated that there were high genetic polymorphisms at six microsatellite loci. The number of effective alleles (Ne), polymorphism information content (PIC) and average heterozygosity (He) were the highest at OarFCB11 and the lowest at OarAE129 in Xinong Saanen dairy goat. The analysis of the effect of the six polymorphisms microsatellite loci on the litter size of Xinong Saanen dairy goat indicated that these polymorphisms microsatellite loci had positive effect on the litter size.Key words: Microsatellite markers, Xinong Saanen dairy goat, genetic polymorphism, litter size
