    The President's Day cyclone 17-19 February 1979: An analysis of jet streak interactions prior to cyclogenesis

    The President's Day cyclone, produced record breaking snowfall along the East Coast of the United States in February 1979. Conventional radiosonde data, SMS GOES infrared imagery and LFM 2 model diagnostics were used to analyze the interaction of upper and lower tropospheric jet streaks prior to cyclogenesis. The analysis reveals that a series of complex scale interactive processes is responsible for the development of the intense cyclone. The evolution of the subsynoptic scale mass and momentum fields prior to and during the period of rapid development of the President's Day cyclone utilizing conventional data and SMS GOES imagery is documented. The interaction between upper and lower tropospheric jet streaks which occurred prior to the onset of cyclogenesis is discussed as well as the possible effects of terrain modified airflow within the precyclogenesis environment. Possible deficiencies in the LFM-2 initial wind fields that could have been responsible, in part, for the poor numerical forecast are examined

    The derivation of the equations is presented, the rate control algorithm described, and simulation methodologies summarized. A set of dynamics equations that can be used recursively to calculate forces and torques acting at the joints of an n link manipulator given the manipulator joint rates are derived. The equations are valid for any n link manipulator system with any kind of joints connected in any sequence. The equations of motion for the class of manipulators consisting of n rigid links interconnected by rotary joints are derived. A technique is outlined for reducing the system of equations to eliminate contraint torques. The linearized dynamics equations for an n link manipulator system are derived. The general n link linearized equations are then applied to a two link configuration. The coordinated rate control algorithm used to compute individual joint rates when given end effector rates is described. A short discussion of simulation methodologies is presented

    Documentation of the preliminary software developed as a framework for a generalized integrated robotic system simulation is presented. The program structure is composed of three major functions controlled by a program executive. The three major functions are: system definition, analysis tools, and post processing. The system definition function handles user input of system parameters and definition of the manipulator configuration. The analysis tools function handles the computational requirements of the program. The post processing function allows for more detailed study of the results of analysis tool function executions. Also documented is the manipulator joint model software to be used as the basis of the manipulator simulation which will be part of the analysis tools capability

    Invertible Dirac operators and handle attachments on manifolds with boundary

    For spin manifolds with boundary we consider Riemannian metrics which are product near the boundary and are such that the corresponding Dirac operator is invertible when half-infinite cylinders are attached at the boundary. The main result of this paper is that these properties of a metric can be preserved when the metric is extended over a handle of codimension at least two attached at the boundary. Applications of this result include the construction of non-isotopic metrics with invertible Dirac operator, and a concordance existence and classification theorem.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Topology and Analysi

    Interviewing suspects: examining the association between skills, questioning, evidence disclosure, and interview outcomes

    The interviewing of suspects is an important element in the investigation of crime. However, studies concerning actual performance of investigators when undertaking such interviews remain sparse. Nevertheless, in England and Wales, since the introduction of a prescribed framework over 20 years ago, field studies have generally shown an improvement in interviewing performance, notwithstanding ongoing concerns largely relating to the more demanding aspects (such as building/maintaining rapport, intermittent summarising and the logical development of topics). Using a sample of 70 real-life interviews, the present study examined questioning and various evidence disclosure strategies (which have also been found demanding), examining their relationships between interview skills and interview outcomes. It was found that when evidence was disclosed gradually (but revealed later), interviews were generally both more skilled and involved the gaining of comprehensive accounts, whereas when evidence was disclosed either early or very late, interviews were found to be both less skilled and less likely to involve this outcome. These findings contribute towards an increased research base for the prescribed framework

    Quantum tomographic cryptography with Bell diagonal states: non-equivalence of classical and quantum distillation protocols

    We present a generalized tomographic quantum key distribution protocol in which the two parties share a Bell diagonal mixed state of two qubits. We show that if an eavesdropper performs a coherent measurement on many quantum ancilla states simultaneously, classical methods of secure key distillation are less effective than quantum entanglement distillation protocols.     Warm gas in central regions of nearby galaxies. Extended mapping of CO(3-2) emission

    We have mapped the CO(3-2) line emission from several nearby galaxies, using the Heinrich-Hertz-Telescope. Our investigation includes twelve galaxies of various types and in different stages of star forming activity. The main results of this CO(3-2) survey are: 1. In none of the observed objects the emission is confined to the nucleus, as claimed in some earlier publications. CO(3-2) emission can be detected for some objects to the same extent as the CO(2-1) and the CO(1-0) lines. 2. The emission is more concentrated to the vicinity of star forming structures than the lower CO transitions. This is shown by decreasing line ratios from the very centres towards larger radii. 3. The CO(3-2) luminosity is stronger in objects that contain a nuclear starburst or morphological peculiarities. 4. The line ratios seem to be independent of Hubble type, color or luminosity. Most galaxies with enhanced central star formation show line ratios of ~1.3 in the very centre and \~1.0 at a radius of about 1kpc. Objects with a ring-like molecular gas distribution or normal galaxies show lower ratios. 5. Starburst galaxies show CO(3-2) emission also in their disks. The line intensities there are higher than that of normal galaxies

    Cohort Differences in Aging in Place Needs Among a Rural-Serving Area Agency on Aging Client Population

    This study was conducted as part of a foundation-funded initiative to better coordinate the system of care in a rural New England area for older adults and individuals with chronic conditions and disabilities. It utilized a needs assessment in order to identify challenges and needs of area community members. Respondents included 347 individuals from the community, ranging from 55 to 105 years old, with a mean of 73.4 years old. Among the respondents, 57.7 percent lived along, 55.7 percent identified as having a chronic condition or disability, 70.3 percent lived in their own home, and 87.9 percent were not receiving any in-home care. Household repairs and help with household chores were among the most common needs. There was a high prevalence of difficulty with getting up after falls and social isolation, showing that implementation of interventions is crucial

    New high-technology products for the treatment of haemophilia

    This review will focus on new technologies in development that promise to lead to further advances in haemophilia therapeutics. There has been continued interest in the bioengineering of recombinant factor VIII (rFVIII) and factor IX (rFIX) with improved function to overcome some of the limitations in current treatment, the high costs of therapy and to increase availability to a broader world haemophilia population. Bioengineered forms of rFVIII, rFIX or alternative haemostatic molecules may ultimately have an impact on improving the efficacy of therapeutic strategies for the haemophilias by improving biosynthesis and secretion, functional activity, half-life and immunogenicity. Preventing and suppressing inhibitors to factor (F) VIII remain a challenge for both clinicians and scientists. Recent experiments have shown that it is possible to obtain anti-idiotypic antibodies with a number of desirable properties: (i) strong binding avidity to FVIII inhibitors; (ii) neutralization of inhibitory activity both in vitro and in vivo ; (iii) cross-reactivity with antibodies from unrelated patients, and (iv) no interference with FVIII function. An alternative, although complementary approach, makes use of peptides derived from filamentous-phage random libraries. Mimotopes of FVIII can be obtained, which bind to the paratope of inhibitory activity and neutralize their activity both in vitro and in vivo . In this paper, we review advanced genetic strategies for haemophilia therapy. Until recently the traditional concept for gene transfer of inherited and acquired haematological diseases has been focused on how best to obtain stable insertion of a cDNA into a target-cell genome, allowing expression of a therapeutic protein. However, as gene-transfer vector systems continue to improve, the requirement for regulated gene transcription and hence regulated protein expression will become more critical. Inappropriate protein expression levels or expression of transferred cDNAs in non-intended cell types or tissues may lead to target-cell toxicity or activation of unwanted host immune responses. Regulated protein expression requires that the transferred gene be transferred with its own regulatory cassette that allows for gene transcription and translation approaching that of the normal gene in its endogenous context.
