The Oxidation of Glucose by Rhizobium meliloti
The extent of oxidation of glucose by Rhizobium meliloti has been determined by comparing the amount of oxygen consumed with the theoretical amount necessary for complete oxidation to carbon dioxide and water. With M/540, M/270, and M/180 concentrations of glucose as a substrate, the rate of oxygen consumption increased rapidly for a period of from 4 to 8 hours then decreased to a low and fairly constant value. The total consumption of oxygen was approximately one-third of the amount required for complete oxidation of the glucose
Statistical properties of fractures in damaged materials
We introduce a model for the dynamics of mud cracking in the limit of of
extremely thin layers. In this model the growth of fracture proceeds by
selecting the part of the material with the smallest (quenched) breaking
threshold. In addition, weakening affects the area of the sample neighbour to
the crack. Due to the simplicity of the model, it is possible to derive some
analytical results. In particular, we find that the total time to break down
the sample grows with the dimension L of the lattice as L^2 even though the
percolating cluster has a non trivial fractal dimension. Furthermore, we obtain
a formula for the mean weakening with time of the whole sample.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Europhysics Letter
COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Resources in Northern New York
COVID-19 continues to be a significant health threat and has caused significant disease and mortality in the fall 2021 wave largely driven by the Delta Variant and complicated by unvaccinated patients. In the state of NY, approximately 40 patients died per day (7 day moving average) from serious COVID-19 illness during this time period. During this time, approximately 35% of Clinton County’s population is not vaccinated for COVID-19 and is subsequently unprotected from serious COVID-19 illness. This work discusses reasons for non-vaccination and strategies to combat vaccine hesitancy. Additionally, it includes a pamphlet for local distribution as well as a dot phrase to be utilized for patients seen in the outpatient setting to serve as a personalized reminder on the importance of receiving vaccination against COVID-19 and to answer questions identified as concerns for vaccine hesitancy.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1837/thumbnail.jp

Stack-based Typed Assembly Language
In previous work, we presented a Typed Assembly Language (TAL). TAL is sufficiently expressive to serve as a target language for compilers of high-level languages such as ML. This work assumed such a compiler would perform a continuation-passing style transform and eliminate the control stack by heap-allocating activation records. However, most compilers are based on stack allocation. This paper presents STAL, an extension of TAL with stack constructs and stack types to support the stack allocation style. We show that STAL is sufficiently expressive to support languages such as Java, Pascal, and ML; constructs such as exceptions and displays; and optimizations such as tail call elimination and callee-saves registers. This paper also formalizes the typing connection between CPS-based compilation and stack-based compilation and illustrates how STAL can formally model calling conventions by specifying them as formal translations of source function types to STAL types.Engineering and Applied Science
