    In June 2009, five dock diaries were placed in the possession the German Maritime Museum, including two by marine architect Herbert Pfohl describing his work in the Rickmers shipyard repair and dock operations in the period from 1982 to 1986. Born in 1929, from 1960 to 1966 Herbert Pfohl drew up steel vessel construction plans at the Rickmers shipyard in Bremerhaven. In 1967, at his own request, he transferred to the Rickmers shipyard repair and dock operation which had been newly founded in the fishing port. The two dock diaries shed light on the working procedures of the Rickmers shipyard repair and dock operations in the years 1982 to 1986. Herbert Pfohl refers to them as "technical bookkeeping" since, in addition to notes on organizational procedures and the scheduling of individual repair and conversion orders, the diaries also include many sketches of technical details. Herbert Pfohl started keeping these diaries of his own accord when he noticed that loose slips of paper did not suffice to record the comprehensive and complex information and refer to it quickly. Such a need might have come about, for example, during discussions on invoices for ship repairs in which the nautical inspector as well as a representative of the insurance company and the head of repair operations all took part.     Bodily experiences of patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa during treatment with the body monochord : A modified grounded theory approach

    This study explored the subjective bodily experiences of patients with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN) during vibro-acoustic stimulation sessions with the Body Monochord (BoMo), a body sound treatment instrument. A total of 20 female patients diagnosed with AN received two BoMo treatments. Subsequent to the treatments, semi-structured interviews were conducted. Analysis was conducted using Grounded Theory. The following main categories were identified: differentiated perception, focussed attention, emergence of bodyrelated feelings, emergence of emotions, emergence of thoughts, emergence of inner images, relaxation, spatial and temporal experience, new bodily experiences and self-reflection. The subjective experiences during the BoMo treatment were independent of patient body shape and weight, were not exclusively focussed on usual illnessrelated body problem areas like the belly and the thighs and had both positive and negative connotations. New therapeutic approaches that are suited to handling and integrating new bodily experiences in patients diagnosed with AN may develop from these observations. Due to the variety of issues that emerge during the treatments BoMo might present a meaningful extension to verbal psychotherapy

Die Publikation dokumentiert die Posterausstellung und Podiumsdiskussion zur Open Access Week 2016.     Rumen and Liver Fluke Infections in Sheep and Goats in Northern and Southern Germany

    Simple Summary Little is known about the distribution of rumen and liver flukes in sheep and goats in Germany or about the occurring rumen fluke species. These fluke infections can be detected by the parasite's eggs in the host animal's feces. Therefore, fecal samples from 223 sheep farms and 143 goat farms from northern and southern Germany were examined. The eggs of rumen flukes were detected on 2.2% of the samples, the eggs of common liver flukes on 2.7%, and the eggs of small liver flukes on 21.1% of the examined sheep farms. The rumen flukes were identified as the emerging species Calicophoron daubneyi. No rumen fluke eggs were detected on any of the goat farm samples, but common and small liver fluke eggs were detected in 5.6% and 7.0% of the goat herds, respectively. Differences in the geographical distribution of rumen and liver flukes between and within the two regions were identified. Rumen flukes were more frequently found in the north, while the two liver fluke species were more frequently found in the south of Germany. Sheep sharing the pasture with other ruminants were more likely to be infected with rumen flukes. Paramphistomidosis has recently been identified as an emerging parasitosis in Europe. This study estimated the prevalence of rumen flukes, Fasciola hepatica and Dicrocoelium dendriticum, in small ruminants in Germany and identified occurring rumen fluke species and potential predictors for fluke infections. Pooled fecal samples from 223 sheep farms and 143 goat farms in northern and southern Germany were examined by the sedimentation technique, and molecular species identification was performed on rumen-fluke-positive samples. In sheep, a flock prevalence of 2.2% was detected for rumen flukes. Calicophoron daubneyi was identified on four of five positive farms, while species identification failed in one flock. No rumen fluke eggs were detected in the examined goat herds. F. hepatica eggs were detected in 2.7% of the sheep flocks, while the herd prevalence was 5.6% in goats. Higher prevalence values of 21.1% (sheep) and 7.0% (goats) were observed for D. dendriticum. Mixed grazing with other ruminants and previously identified infections with rumen flukes and/or F. hepatica were identified as predictors for paramphistomidosis. The distribution of the three trematode species followed a geographical pattern associated with conditions favoring the relevant intermediate hosts.     Survival and failure types after radiation therapy of vulvar cancer

    Background and purpose: Describe the survival rates and distribution of events on competing failure types in vulvar carcinoma after treatment with chemoradiation (CRT) or radiation (RT) alone. Material and methods: We included patients with vulvar carcinoma treated with CRT or RT between 2009 and 2014. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. We performed a competing risk analysis and included five competing events: loco-regional failure (LRF), distant metastasis, LRF plus distant metastasis, and death without evidence of disease, with the remaining patients denoted alive without evidence of disease. Results: 87 patients were treated. Progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) at 3 years were 40% and 57%, respectively. 41.3% of patients relapsed, most often loco-regionally. We saw significantly worse PFS and OS for patients older than 68 (p = 0.011/p = 0.010) and for patients treated with definitive RT (p = 0.004/p = 0.005). Competing risk analysis showed increased risk of LRF, and that death was most often related to vulvar cancer. Death without disease recurrence was less frequent, even in the elderly. Conclusions: LRF was the most common event. PFS and OS were inferior for elderly patients and patients treated definitively. A better understanding of these differences may be used to define risk adapted treatment strategies

    SARS-CoV-2 infection prevalence in healthcare workers and administrative and support staff: The first-wave experience at three academic hospitals in the Tshwane district of Gauteng Province, South Africa

    BACKGROUND : The availability of well and functional healthcare workers (HCWs) and support staff is pivotal to a country’s ability to manage the COVID-19 pandemic effectively. While HCWs have been identified as being at increased risk for acquisition of SARS-CoV-2 infection, there is a paucity of data pertaining to South African (SA) HCW-related infection rates. Global and provincial disparities in these numbers necessitate local data in order to mitigate risks. OBJECTIVES : To ascertain the overall SARS-CoV-2 infection rates and outcomes among all hospital staff at three hospitals in the Tshwane district of Gauteng Province, SA, and further determine associations with the development of severe COVID-19 disease. METHODS : This retrospective audit was conducted across three academic hospitals in the Tshwane district for the period 1 June - 31 August 2020. Deidentified data from occupational health and safety departments at each hospital were used to calculate infection rates. A more detailed analysis at one of the three hospitals included evaluation of demographics, work description, possible source of SARS-CoV-2 exposure (community or hospital), comorbidities and outcomes. RESULTS : The period prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infections ranged from 6.1% to 15.4% between the three hospitals, with the average period prevalence being 11.1%. The highest incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infections was observed among administrative staff (2.8 cases per 1 000 staff days), followed by nursing staff (2.7 cases per 1 000 staff days). Medical doctors had the lowest incidence of 1.1 cases per 1 000 staff days. SARS-CoV-2 infections were categorised as either possibly community or possibly healthcare facility acquired for 26.6% and 73.4% of the infections, respectively. The administrative group had the highest proportion of possible community-acquired infections (41.8%), while doctors had the lowest (6.1%). The mean age of individuals with mild and severe disease was 41 years and 46.1 years, respectively (p=0.004). The presence of comorbidities was significantly associated with severity of disease (p=0.002).     Degradation potentials of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from thawed permafrost peat

    Global warming can substantially affect the export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from peat-permafrost to aquatic systems. The direct degradability of such peat-derived DOC, however, is poorly constrained because previous permafrost thaw studies have mainly addressed mineral soil catchments or DOC pools that have already been processed in surface waters. We incubated peat cores from a palsa mire to compare an active layer and an experimentally thawed permafrost layer with regard to DOC composition and degradation potentials of pore water DOC. Our results show that DOC from the thawed permafrost layer had high initial degradation potentials compared with DOC from the active layer. In fact, the DOC that showed the highest bio- and photo-degradability, respectively, originated in the thawed permafrost layer. Our study sheds new light on the DOC composition of peat-permafrost directly upon thaw and suggests that past estimates of carbon-dioxide emissions from thawed peat permafrost may be biased as they have overlooked the initial mineralization potential of the exported DOC
