The Effects of Violence on Health Service Utilization and Access in Mexico
This dissertation analyzes the effects of community violence on health care service utilization and access in Mexico. Given the widespread effects of violence, there is good reason to believe that health service delivery might be affected, but it is largely unknown. This study looks at potential channels through which violence may impact the supply and demand of health care services in Mexico, through qualitative and quantitative methods. It posits that violence can have heterogeneous effects on service utilization and provides a deeper exploration of factors that may have negative and positive effects on service utilization. Supply-side effects point towards deterring effects of violence in service utilization out of fear of travel and fear among medical staff to go to their workplaces or shortening the hours of operation out of fear of exposure. Mixed effects logistic regression models reveal demand-side effects through a significant increase in health care service utilization as violence increases possibly related to worsening health (e.g. through stress or other mechanisms), which may drive individuals to seek more services. In sensitivity analysis, increased primary care service utilization as a result of an increase in the homicide rate remains significant when predictors of service use such as having a chronic condition, insurance status and urban areas are included in the models. Qualitative findings also reveal an increased demand for mental health services at the primary care level as a result of increased community violence. Findings underscore the importance of access to outpatient services and mental health services at the primary care level in contexts of high violence. The significant increase in the use of outpatient service utilization point towards potentially protective behaviors driving the increase of use of services as violence increases. This analysis highlights the responsibility and need for providing safe access to medical services in contexts of violence that may translate to natural disasters or other man-made conflicts
Do They Want to Regulate Online Profiling?
Online profiling or behavioural tracking is the process by which private companies track and gather data about users’ activities in online platforms. The data collected by all the companies is aggregated with the purpose of creating a comprehensive profile about users. Since at least 15 years ago, there have been several attempts to regulate online profiling in order to reduce its privacy implications. In general, these regulations have tried to limit the way the information is used, the type of data that is collected, and impose or suggest the security standards that the companies should take to protect it.
This article will demonstrate that the proposed regulations do not reduce online profiling’s privacy repercussions. In addition, it will argue that in order to reduce privacy repercussions it is necessary to regulate the aggregation and commercialization of the data. However, governments, industries, and users may not have enough incentives to find alternative methods or effective regulations to address the problems raised by online profiling

Transistor performance of high-Tc three terminal devices based on carrier concentration modulation
Electric field effect devices and quasiparticle injection effect devices are good candidates for the realization of three terminal devices from high-T/sub c/ materials, since they take explicit advantage of the low carrier concentration in these compounds. We describe the fabrication and operation of both types of devices, and discuss their performance as transistor-like element
Observing Grasping Actions Directed to Emotion-Laden Objects: Effects upon Corticospinal Excitability
The motor system is recruited whenever one executes an action as well as when one observes the same action being executed by others. Although it is well established that emotion modulates the motor system, the effect of observing other individuals acting in an emotional context is particularly elusive. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect induced by the observation of grasping directed to emotion-laden objects upon corticospinal excitability (CSE). Participants classified video-clips depicting the right-hand of an actor grasping emotion-laden objects. Twenty video-clips differing in terms of valence but balanced in arousal level were selected. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were then recorded from the first dorsal interosseous using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) while the participants observed the selected emotional video-clips. During the video-clip presentation, TMS pulses were randomly applied at one of two different time points of grasping: (1) maximum grip aperture, and (2) object contact time. CSE was higher during the observation of grasping directed to unpleasant objects compared to pleasant ones. These results indicate that when someone observes an action of grasping directed to emotion-laden objects, the effect of the object valence promotes a specific modulation over the motor system.Fil: Nogueira Campos, Anaelli A..
