    Quantitative Nanofriction Characterization of Corrugated Surfaces by Atomic Force Microscopy

    Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a suitable tool to perform tribological characterization of materials down to the nanometer scale. An important aspect in nanofriction measurements of corrugated samples is the local tilt of the surface, which affects the lateral force maps acquired with the AFM. This is one of the most important problems of state-of-the-art nanotribology, making difficult a reliable and quantitative characterization of real corrugated surfaces. A correction of topographic spurious contributions to lateral force maps is thus needed for corrugated samples. In this paper we present a general approach to the topographic correction of AFM lateral force maps and we apply it in the case of multi-asperity adhesive contact. We describe a complete protocol for the quantitative characterization of the frictional properties of corrugated systems in the presence of surface adhesion using the AFM.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, RevTex 4, submitted to Journal of Applied Physic

    Elastic modulus of tree frog adhesive toe pads

    Previous work using an atomic force microscope in nanoindenter mode indicated that the outer, 10- to 15-μm thick, keratinised layer of tree frog toe pads has a modulus of elasticity equivalent to silicone rubber (5–15 MPa) (Scholz et al. 2009), but gave no information on the physical properties of deeper structures. In this study, micro-indentation is used to measure the stiffness of whole toe pads of the tree frog, Litoria caerulea. We show here that tree frog toe pads are amongst the softest of biological structures (effective elastic modulus 4–25 kPa), and that they exhibit a gradient of stiffness, being stiffest on the outside. This stiffness gradient results from the presence of a dense network of capillaries lying beneath the pad epidermis, which probably has a shock absorbing function.     Optimal adhesion control via cooperative hierarchy, grading, geometries and non-linearity of anchorages

    Optimization of dry adhesion in biological organisms is achieved using various strategies at different scale levels. In the past, studies have shown how contact splitting is used effectively by animals such as geckos and insects to increase the total peeling line of contacts and therefore the adhesion force. Also, tapering of contacts or grading of their mechanical properties has been shown to be instrumental in the achievement of improved adhesion efficiency. On a more macroscopic scale, structures such as spider web anchorages exploit hierarchical structure or nonlinear constitutive material properties to improve resilience and to achieve tunability in adhesion/detachment characteristics. Here, we analyse some of these properties and propose some mechanisms for the optimization of adhesion that have thus far been neglected in modelling approaches, and could be potentially exploited for the design of bioinspired adhesives. We consider hierarchical structure, contact tapering, grading of mechanical properties, and their interaction. It emerges that these mechanisms contribute on various size scales to the achievement of optimal adhesive properties through structural complexity and hierarchical organization

    Salt Dependence of the Tribological Properties of a Surface-Grafted Weak Polycation in Aqueous Solution

    The nanoscopic adhesive and frictional behaviour of end-grafted poly[2-(dimethyl amino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) films (brushes) in contact with gold- or PDMAEMA-coated atomic force microscope tips in potassium halide solutions with different concentrations up to 300 mM is a strong function of salt concentration. The conformation of the polymers in the brush layer is sensitive to salt concentration, which leads to large changes in adhesive forces and the contact mechanics at the tip–sample contact, with swollen brushes (which occur at low salt concentrations) yielding large areas of contact and friction–load plots that fit JKR behaviour, while collapsed brushes (which occur at high salt concentrations) yield sliding dominated by ploughing, with conformations in between fitting DMT mechanics. The relative effect of the different anions follows the Hofmeister series, with I − collapsing the brushes more than Br − and Cl − for the same salt concentration

    Shearing of fibrillar adhesive microstructure: friction and shear-related changes in pull-off force

    To characterize the effect of shearing on function of fibrillar adhesive microstructure, friction and shear-related changes in pull-off force of a biomimetic polyvinylsiloxane mushroom-shaped fibrillar adhesive microstructure were studied. In contrast to a control flat surface, which exhibited pronounced stick–slip motion accompanied with high friction, the fibrillar microstructure demonstrated a stable and smooth sliding with a friction coefficient approximately four times lower. The structured contact also manifested zero pull-off force in a sheared state, while the flat surface exhibited highly scattered and unreliable pull-off force when affected by contact shearing. It appears that the fibrillar microstructure can be used in applications where a total attachment force should be generated in a binary on/off state and, most surprisingly, is suitable to stabilize and minimize elastomer friction
