noise in heavy traffic M/M/1 queue
We study the power spectral density of continuous time Markov chains and
explicit its relationship with the eigenstructure of the infinitesimal
generator. This result helps us understand the dynamics of the number of
customers for a M/M/1 queuing process in the heavy traffic regime.Closed-form
relations for the power law scalings associated to the eigenspectrum of the
M/M/1 queue generator are obtained, providing a detailed description of the
power spectral density structure, which is shown to exhibit a
noise. We confirm this result by numerical simulation. We also show that a
continuous time random walk on a ring exhibits very similar behavior. It is
remarkable than a complex behavior such as noise can emerge from the
M/M/1 queue, which is the ''simplest'' queuing model
Spontaneous PT symmetry breaking of a ferromagnetic superfluid in a gradient field
We consider the interaction of a ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein
condensate with a magnetic field gradient. The magnetic field gradient realizes
a spin-position coupling that explicitly breaks time-reversal symmetry T and
space parity P, but preserves the combined PT symmetry. We observe using
numerical simulations, a first-order phase transition spontaneously breaking
this re-maining symmetry. The transition to a low-gradient phase, in which
gradient effects are frozen out by the ferromagnetic interaction, suggests the
possibility of high-coherence magnetic sensors unaffected by gradient
dephasing
Distributed quasi-Bragg beam splitter in crossed atomic waveguides
AbstractWe perform an experimental and theoretical study of a novel distributed quasi-Bragg splitter for cold atoms propagating in crossed optical waveguides. The atoms are guided by horizontal red-detuned laser beams which cross with an angle of roughly 90°. The lattice formed by the interference between the two waveguides is used as a quasi-Bragg splitter to continuously deflect the atomic flux from one waveguide into the other. In the limit of strong waveguide confinement and depending on the velocity of the cloud, three main regimes are observed corresponding (1) to the absence of reflection, (2) to partial reflection and (3) to full reflection into the second waveguide. In view of the application to atom interferometry, the condition to split the cloud into mainly two equally-populated fragments is only met in the highest velocity regime, where the fraction of reflected and transmitted atoms can be controlled by tuning the lattice height. A diagnostic of the momentum distribution shows that a quasi-Bragg splitter with the occupation of mainly two momentum states is achieved in this regime. This behaviour can be understood by considering the band structure associated with the potential in the crossing region and agrees with numerical simulations of the atomic dynamics.</jats:p
Robust laser frequency stabilization by serrodyne modulation
We report the relative frequency stabilization of a distributed feedback
erbium-doped fiber laser on an optical cavity by serrodyne frequency shifting.
A correction bandwidth of 2.3 MHz and a dynamic range of 220 MHz are achieved,
which leads to a strong robustness against large disturbances up to high
frequencies. We demonstrate that serrodyne frequency shifting reaches a higher
correction bandwidth and lower relative frequency noise level compared to a
standard acousto-optical modulator based scheme. Our results allow to consider
promising applications in the absolute frequency stabilization of lasers on
optical cavities.Comment: 3 pages, accepted for publication in Optics Letter
Nondestructive detection for atom interferometry and Bose-Einstein condensation in a high finesse optical cavity
In this thesis, we study several methods to improve atom interferometers. In the first part of the manuscript, we analyze how a nondestructive detection, that preserves the coherence between the internal degrees of freedom in an atomic ensemble, can be used to increase the sensitivity of interferometers. We first theoretically show how the projection of the wave-function induced by the measurement prepares spin-squeezed states. We then present the implementation of this method with a detection based on the frequency modulation spectroscopy. Finally, some first applications are described, more explicitly we show how to implement a quantum feedback that preserve the atomic state against the decoherence induced by a random collective flip, we also introduce a phase-locked loop where the atomic sample is used as the phase reference. In the second part of the manuscript, we present the all-optical realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a high-finesse cavity using a laser system based on standard telecoms technologies. We first describe the resonator and the frequency lock of the laser on the resonance, in particular, we introduce a new stabilization method based of the serrodyne modulation. Finally, we show how the condensate is obtained from the evaporation in the cavity mode
