High-sensitivity ion detection at low voltages with current-driven organic electrochemical transistors

Ions dissolved in aqueous media play a fundamental role in plants, animals, and humans. Therefore, the in situ quantification of the ion concentration in aqueous media is gathering relevant interest in several fields including biomedical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, healthcare products, water and food test and control, agriculture industry and security. The fundamental limitation of the state-of-art transistor-based approaches is the intrinsic trade-off between sensitivity, ion concentration range and operating voltage. Here we show a current-driven configuration based on organic electrochemical transistors that overcomes this fundamental limit. The measured ion sensitivity exceeds by one order of magnitude the Nernst limit at an operating voltage of few hundred millivolts. The ion sensitivity normalized to the supply voltage is larger than 1200 mV V-1 dec-1, which is the largest value ever reported for ion-sensitive transistors. The proposed approach is general and can be extended to any transistor technology, thus opening opportunities for high-performance bioelectronics

Unified drain-current model of complementary p- and n-type OTFTs

A unified drain current model of complementary (p- and n-type) organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) is presented. The model is physically based and takes into account the detailed properties of the organic semiconductor through the density of states (DOS). The drain current depends on the geometrical and physical parameters of the transistor, on the applied gate, drain and source voltages, and on the surface potential at the source and drain contacts. An analytical expression of the surface potential is derived. The proposed model is validated with the numerical calculations and the measurements of both p- and n-type OTFTs fabricated in a printed complementary technology. The provided analyses show that the model is continuous, accurate, and includes the main physical effects taking place in complementary organic transistors. Thanks to its analytical and symmetric formulation, it is suitable for the design of organic integrated circuits. Moreover, the unified physical picture provided by the model enables the extraction of the OTFTs physical parameters, thus it is a very powerful tool for the technology characterization

Assessment of recent process analytical technology (PAT) trends : a multiauthor review

    No full text
This multiauthor review article aims to bring readers up to date with some of the current trends in the field of process analytical technology (PAT) by summarizing each aspect of the subject (sensor development, PAT based process monitoring and control methods) and presenting applications both in industrial laboratories and in manufacture e.g. at GSK, AstraZeneca and Roche. Furthermore, the paper discusses the PAT paradigm from the regulatory science perspective. Given the multidisciplinary nature of PAT, such an endeavour would be almost impossible for a single author, so the concept of a multiauthor review was born. Each section of the multiauthor review has been written by a single expert or group of experts with the aim to report on its own research results. This paper also serves as a comprehensive source of information on PAT topics for the novice reader
