    Low-lying fermion modes of Nf=2 improved Wilson fermions

    We present preliminary results for the topological charge and susceptibility determined from the low-lying eigenmodes of the Wilson-Dirac operator. These modes have been computed on dynamical configurations with Nf=2 non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions.     Transpiration and moisture evolution in packaged fresh horticultural produce and the role of integrated mathematical models: A review

    Transpiration has various adverse effects on postharvest quality and the shelf-life of fresh fruit and vegetables (FFV). If not controlled, the water released through this process results in direct mass loss and moisture condensation inside packaged FFV. Condensation represents a threat to the product quality as water may accumulate on the product surface and/or packaging system, causing defects in external appearance and promoting growth of spoilage microorganisms. Thus, moisture regulation is extremely important for extending FFV shelf-life. This review focuses on transpiration phenomenon and moisture evolution in packaged fresh horticultural produce. It provides recent information on various moisture control strategies suitable for packaging of fresh horticultural produce. It also provides an evaluation on the role and application of integrative mathematical modelling in describing water relations of FFV for packaging design, as well as, an overview of models reported in literature

    Voltage rectification effects in mesoscopic superconducting triangles: experiment and modelling

    The interaction of externally applied currents with persistent currents induced by magnetic field in a mesoscopic triangle is investigated. As a consequence of the superposition of these currents, clear voltage rectification effects are observed. We demonstrate that the amplitude of the rectified signal strongly depends on the configurations of the current leads with the lowest signal obtained when the contacts are aligned along a median of the triangle. When the contacts are aligned off-centered compared to the geometrical center, the voltage response shows oscillations as a function of the applied field, whose sign can be controlled by shifting the contacts. These results are in full agreement with theoretical predictions for an analogous system consisting of a closed loop with a finite number of identical Josephson junctions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys.     Transverse rectification of disorder-induced fluctuations in a driven system

    We study numerically the overdamped motion of particles driven in a two dimensional ratchet potential. In the proposed design, of the so-called geometrical-ratchet type, the mean velocity of a single particle in response to a constant force has a transverse component that can be induced by the presence of thermal or other unbiased fluctuations. We find that additional quenched disorder can strongly enhance the transverse drift at low temperatures, in spite of reducing the transverse mobility. We show that, under general conditions, the rectified transverse velocity of a driven particle fluid is equivalent to the response of a one dimensional flashing ratchet working at a drive-dependent effective temperature, defined through generalized Einstein relations.Comment: 4.5 pages, 3 fig

    Phase ordering dynamics of the (2+1)- and (3+1)-dimensional ϕ4\phi^4 theory with Hamiltonian equations of motion is investigated numerically. Dynamic scaling is confirmed.     Thermal ratchet effects in ferrofluids

    Rotational Brownian motion of colloidal magnetic particles in ferrofluids under the influence of an oscillating external magnetic field is investigated. It is shown that for a suitable time dependence of the magnetic field, a noise induced rotation of the ferromagnetic particles due to rectification of thermal fluctuations takes place. Via viscous coupling, the associated angular momentum is transferred from the magnetic nano-particles to the carrier liquid and can then be measured as macroscopic torque on the fluid sample. A thorough theoretical analysis of the effect in terms of symmetry considerations, analytical approximations, and numerical solutions is given which is in accordance with recent experimental findings.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
