21 p.This paper is a sequel to ‘Belnap-Dunn semantics for natural implicative expansions of Kleene's strong three-valued matrix with two designated values’, where a ‘bivalent’ Belnap-Dunn semantics is provided for all the expansions referred to in its title. The aim of the present paper is to carry out a parallel investigation for all natural implicative expansions of Kleene's strong 3-valued matrix now with only one designated value.S

Simultaneous optimization of even flow and land and timber value in forest planning: a continuous approach

    Get PDF
Background: Forest management planning involves deciding which silvicultural treatment should be applied to each stand and at what time to best meet the objectives established for the forest. For this, many mathematical formulations have been proposed, both within the linear and non-linear programming frameworks, in the latter case generally considering integer variables in a combinatorial manner. We present a novel approach for planning the management of forests comprising single-species, even-aged stands, using a continuous, multi-objective formulation (considering economic and even flow) which can be solved with gradient-type methods. Results: The continuous formulation has proved robust in forest with different structures and different number of stands. The results obtained show a clear advantage of the gradient-type methods over heuristics to solve the problems, both in terms of computational time (efficiency) and in the solution obtained (effectiveness). Their improvement increases drastically with the dimension of the problem (number of stands). Conclusions: It is advisable to rigorously analyze the mathematical properties of the objective functions involved in forest management planning models. The continuous bi-objective model proposed in this paper works with smooth enough functions and can be efficiently solved by using gradient-type techniques. The advantages of the new methodology are summarized as: it does not require to set management prescriptions in advance, it avoids the division of the planning horizon into periods, and it provides better solutions than the traditional combinatorial formulations. Additionally, the graphical display of trade-off information allows an a posteriori articulation of preferences in an intuitive way, therefore being a very interesting tool for the decision-making process in forest planningS

Pneumatic device for somatosensorial and pain stimulation compatible with magnetic functional resonance (fMRI) and Magnetoencefalography (MEG) DISNESO- 02

    Get PDF
A prototype has been developed to study the somatosensory activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging technologies (fMRI) .The complete system is based on two pneumatic pressure valves that activate an applicator which is totally compatible with the magnetic resonance and magnetoencephalography, and is controlled by programmable software. The system provides stimulation on the tender points area with accuracy of 0.8cm2, and it allows to determine the pain threshold in persons with different neuropathologies related with pain processes. It should be useful in the characterization and distinction of somatosensory, motor and pain areas

Central pain augmentation in fibromyalgia during subjectively-matched mechanical stimulation

    Get PDF
The precise pathophysiology of fibromyalgia, a syndrome characterized by, among other symptoms, chronic widespread pain, remains to be elucidated (Abeles et al., 2007). The fact that, when subjected to the same amount of stimulation, patients show enhanced brain responses as compared to controls provides evidence of central pain augmentation in this syndrome. We aimed to characterize brain response differences when stimulation is adjusted to elicit similar subjective levels of pain in both groups

Variations in the cellular proliferation of prolactin cells from late pregnancy to lactation in rats

[EN]Lactation is a physiological process associated with hyperactivity of hypophyseal prolactin-producing cells. It is known that the percentage of these cells is increased during lactation, although there are discrepancies in the reports regarding the mechanisms responsible for increasing the number of prolactin cells. In order to analyse whether this increase is a result of previous proliferation, variations in the proliferation rate of prolactinpositive cells were determined from late pregnancy to lactation in adult female rats by means of observation of the immunohistochemical expression of PCNA as a marker of cellular proliferation. During late pregnancy, a very significant increase in the percentage of proliferating prolactin cells was observed in comparison to non-pregnant females in the proestrus phase (p < 0.01). Although the percentage of prolactin-positive cells after one week of lactation was higher than in non-lactating or in pregnant females (p < 0.01), the proliferation rate was lower than in the other groups studied. In sum, our results suggest that late pregnancy constitutes a preliminary proliferative phase preparatory to the ensuing lactation phase and that endocrine changes in late pregnancy involve the cellular proliferation of hypophyseal prolactin cells in order to prepare the gland for later demands and to prevent proliferative changes from occurring during lactation
