    A Beast with Two Backs....is back!

    A research and public engagement event, recording community memories of the production, filming, and original broadcast of Dennis Potter’s Wednesday Play A Beast With Two Backs (1968) in Lydbrook where much of it was filmed using local extras. Providing the community focus and catalyst for the research was a screening of the play, and exhibition. This event runs in parallel with the British Film Institute own London Southbank two-summer season Messages for Posterity: The Complete Dennis Potter culminating in June-July 2015. The accompanying Lydbrook (Gloucestershire) exhibition also showcased to the Forest of Dean community the Potter research work to date of Jason Griffiths and Hannah Grist of the University of Gloucestershire, and Jo Garde-Hansen (now at University of Warwick including the HLF-supported Dennis Potter Archive Project, and the University of Gloucestershire funded Potter Matters website. The event also saw the launch of Remembering Dennis Potter Through Fans, Extras and Archives (2014) written by University of Gloucestershire research student Hannah Grist, and Dr Joanne Garde-Hansen associate professor in Culture, Media and Communications at the University of Warwick, both being members (internal and external respectively) of the Research Centre for Media, Memory and Community

    Roles of Dicer-Like Proteins 2 and 4 in Intra- and Intercellular Antiviral Silencing

    RNA silencing is an innate antiviral mechanism conserved in organisms across kingdoms. Such cellular defense involves DICER or DICER-LIKEs (DCLs) that process viral RNAs into small interfering (vsi)RNAs. Plants encode four DCLs which play diverse roles in cell-autonomous virus-induced RNA silencing (known as VIGS) against viral invasion. However, intracellular VIGS can spread between cells, and the genetic basis and involvement of vsiRNAs in non-cell autonomous VIGS remains poorly understood. Here using GFP as a reporter gene together with a suite of DCL RNAi transgenic lines, we show that in addition to well-established activities of DCLs in intracellular VIGS and vsiRNA biogenesis, DCL4 inhibits intercellular VIGS whilst DCL2 is required, likely along with DCL2-processed/dependent vsiRNAs and their precursor RNAs, for efficient VIGS trafficking from epidermal to adjacent cells. DCL4 imposed an epistatic effect on DCL2 to impede cell-to-cell spread of VIGS. Our results demonstrate previously unknown functions for DCL2 and DCL4 which may form a dual defensive frontier for intra- and intercellular silencing to double-protect cells from virus infection in Nicotiana benthamiana

    A Global Hypothesis for Women in Journalism and Mass Communications: The Ratio of Recurrent and Reinforced Residuum

    This paper examines the status of women in communications industries and on university faculties. It specifically tests the Ratio of Recurrent and Reinforced Residuum or R3 hypothesis, as developed by Rush in the early 1980s [Rush, Buck & Ogan,1982]. The R3 hypothesis predicts that the percentage of women in the communications industries and on university faculties will follow the ratio residing around 1/4:3/4 or 1/3:2/3 proportion females to males. This paper presents data from a nationwide U.S. survey and compares them to data from global surveys and United Nations reports. The evidence is overwhelming and shows the relevance and validity of the R3 hypothesis across different socio-economic and cultural contexts. The paper argues that the ratio is the outcome of systemic discrimination that operates at multiple levels. The obstacles to achieving equality in the academy as well as media industries are discussed and suggestions for breaking out of the R3 ratio are included.
