    INVESTIGATION OF OPINIONS OF TEACHERS OF THE HEARING-IMPAIRED CHILDREN ABOUT SERVING AS A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

    The aim of this study was to investigate the opinions of teachers of the hearing-impaired children about serving as a special education teacher. The research was designed as a descriptive case study within the framework of qualitative research methods. Two criteria that the participants to be included in the study should have were determined as follows: graduating from universities’ hearing-impaired teaching programs and serving as a special education classroom teacher in schools affiliated to the MNE. The participants consist of 51 teachers meeting the specified criteria. Semi-structured interviews were held with 5 of the participants, and data were collected from 46 of them through an open-ended questionnaire. Given the pandemic period conditions we currently experience, the e-interviews were conducted using Zoom, while open-ended questionnaires were collected via Google Forms. Descriptive analysis technique was used in the analysis of the research data. The descriptive analysis process consists of four stages: creating a thematic framework, processing of data according to the thematic framework, identification of findings, and interpretation of findings. Study findings revealed that the fact that teachers serve out-of-field they graduated from led them to feel insufficient in terms of professional knowledge and competency. Besides, it was observed that they failed to provide sufficient benefit to the students, they had difficulties communicating with families, they failed to cooperate with the school administrators or other colleagues and could not find the necessary support.     DETERMINATION OF THE EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY COMPETENCIES OF SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS

    The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that started in December 2019 led to the closure of schools on a global level, and implementation of strict social distancing measures has led to rapid and prevalent changes in conventional forms of education and instruction. In this period where distance education is preferred in education processes, the education technology competencies of teachers have gained importance. In this context, this study aimed to determine the education technology competencies of special education teachers. The descriptive study included 114 special education teachers. The data were collected by using the “Education Technology Competencies Scale for Teachers” and analyzed by using the SPSS 25 package software. The maximum total score that could be obtained in the scale that was used in the study is 190. It was determined that, with the mean score of 155.27, the participants of this study had an education technology competency level of 81.72%. In this study which investigated the technological competencies of special education teachers, no significant difference was found based on the participants’ gender, professional experience or areas of teaching. Considering the items in the dimensions of the scale, it was found that the male teachers were more competent in terms of technical knowledge on technology, while the female teachers used the technological knowledge they had more effectively in classes, instruction and materials, as well as in communication with both students and parents. Bu makale, otistik ve zihinsel engelli çocukların eğitim ve öğretimine yardımcı olmak için geliştirilen bir yazılım aracını sunmaktadır. Bu araç ile engelli çocukların ifadeler ve onlara karşılık gelen kavramlar arasında resimler aracılığıyla bağlantı kurmalarına yardımcı olmak amaçlanmaktadır. Kullanıcının sistemle olan etkileşiminin doğal dil ifadeleriyle kurulmasını sağlamanın, iletişimi kısıtlanmış anahtar kelimelerle sınırlandırmaktan daha etkin olduğu gerçeğini dikkate alarak aracımızı bir Doğal Dil İşleme (DDİ) modülü ile donattık. Bu modül aracın omurgası olarak görev yapmakta ve doğal dil ifadelerini birleşme tabanlı (unification-based) bir dilbilgisi kullanarak anlamsal çerçeveler şeklinde çözümlemektedir. Giriş ifadeleri, ilgili resimlerle anlamsal çerçeveler aracılığıyla eşleştirilmektedir. Bu anlamsal çerçeveler, resimleri biçimsel bakımdan değil, içerikleri açısından temsil ettiği için, sistem esnek bir şekilde çalışabilmektedir.It is both a legal and conscientious responsibility of the society to enable children with disabilities to have access to and receive education and training as easily and effectively as possible. Assistive technology offers great opportunities for disabled students to participate in educational activities fully and adequately. This paper presents a software tool developed to assist the education and training of autistic and mentally retarded children. The tool is intended to help the disabled child establish the bridge between expressions and the concepts they refer to via relevant images. Taking into consideration the fact that enabling the user to interact with the system using natural language expressions will be much more effective compared to a system constraining the communication to a limited set of isolated keywords, the tool has been equipped with a Natural Language Processing (NLP) module. This module functions as the backbone of the tool. It analyzes natural language expressions into semantic frames using a unification-based grammar. Input expressions are mapped onto relevant images via the mediation of semantic frames. As these semantics frames represent the content of images, rather than their formal aspects, the system is able to operate on a flexible basis

XML ile birlikte Web Servisleri kavramı doğmuştur. Bu çalışmanın amacı İnternet üzerinde bilginin paylaşımında kullanılabilecek HTML, XML ve Web Servislerinin İnternet sunucularına etkisini incelemektir.     Coincident Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy and Paracentral Acute Middle Maculopathy in COVID-19

    An ophthalmology consultation was requested for a 29-year-old woman complaining of visual field defects. The patient had presented to the emergency department with cough and high fever one day earlier. Chest computed tomography demonstrated pneumonia and two severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction tests were positive. The patient had undergone renal transplantation 11 years ago due to glomerulonephritis. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/40 in the right eye and 20/30 in the left eye. Fluorescein angiography showed macular hypoperfusion, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed hyperreflectivity in the inner nuclear, outer plexiform, and outer nuclear layers, as well as discontinuity of the ellipsoid zone. Perimetry confirmed bilateral central scotoma. Levels of D-dimer and fibrinogen were 0.86 g/mL and 435.6 g/mL, respectively. The patient was diagnosed as having concurrent acute macular neuroretinopathy and paracentral acute middle maculopathy and was given low-molecular-weight heparin treatment for one month. Her BCVA improved to 20/20 in both eyes, and regression was observed in the retinal findings, hyperreflectivity and ellipsoid zone disruption on OCT, and scotoma in perimetry. Inflammation, thrombosis, and glial involvement may play a role in the pathogenesis of retinal microvascular impairment in COVID-19

    PD-L1 expression in immune cells is a favorable prognostic factor for nasopharyngeal carcinoma

    Background: Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) has been determined as a reliable prognostic factor for various malignancies. In this study, we aimed to determine the prognostic effect of PD-L1 expression in tumor-infiltrating immune cells (TIICs) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients.Methods: Seventy patients diagnosed with non-metastatic NPC were included in the study. PD-L1 expression on immune cells was analyzed by immunohistochemical method. Patients were categorized into two groups according to the PD-L1 expression level in TIICs (level of PD-L1 staining ≥5% positive vs <5% negative).Results: Median follow-up period was 34 months (range = 1 - 188). 1 and 2 years survival rate were found as 75% and 63% in PD-L1 negative TIICs group (47%), and 85% and 83% in PD-L1 positive TIICs group (53%), respectively. PD-L1 positivity in immune cells (ICs) was detected in 53% of the patients. The survival rate was found better in the PD- L1 positive group compared to the negative group (P = 0.049).Discussion: In conclusion, the survival rate was found significantly better in the PD-L1 positive TIICs group, compared to the negative group

    Deneysel meme kanseri modelinde süt proteinlerinin koruyucu etkisi

    Amaç: Süt serumu proteinlerinin insan sağlığına üzerine birçok yararlı etkileri olduğu bilinmektedir. Çalışmamızda, sıçanlarda N-metil-N-nitrozure ile indüklenen meme kanseri modelinde süt serumu proteinlerinin koruyucu etkileri araştırılmıştır. Yöntemler: Çalışmamızda deneysel meme kanseri modeli oluşturmak üzere 130 günlük Sprague-Dawley türü, dişi, virjin sıçanlara 100 gün ara ile iki kez N-metil-N-nitrozüre enjekte edildi. Çalışma boyunca sıçanlara haftada iki kez orogastrik gavajla süt serumu proteinleri verildi. Sıçanlar 180 gün sonunda sakrifiye edildi doku örnekleri toplandı. Karaciğer, böbrek ve meme dokularındaki glutatyon, malondialdehit ve protein karbonil değerleri karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Tüm dokularda en yüksek malondialdehit ve protein karbonil değerleri N-metil-N-nitrozüre grubundaki sıçanlarda en düşük malondialdehit ve protein karbonil değerleri de kontrol grubunda gözlendi. N-metil-N-nitrozüre ile birlikte süt serumu proteinleri verildiğinde ise bu değerlerdeki artışların baskılanarak kontrol grubu değerlerine yaklaştığı gözlendi. Sonuç: Çalışmamızda N-metil-N-nitrozüre ile oluşturulan meme kanseri modelinde N-metil-N-nitrozüre etkisiyle oluşan biyokimyasal değişikliklere karşı süt serumu proteinlerinin koruyucu etkisi olduğu gözlenmiştir

    Evaluation of patients with fibrotic interstitial lung disease: Preliminary results from the Turk-UIP study

    OBJECTIVE: Differential diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is important among fibrotic interstitial lung diseases (ILD). This study aimed to evaluate the rate of IPF in patients with fibrotic ILD and to determine the clinical-laboratory features of patients with and without IPF that would provide the differential diagnosis of IPF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included the patients with the usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern or possible UIP pattern on thorax high-resolution computed tomography, and/or UIP pattern, probable UIP or possible UIP pattern at lung biopsy according to the 2011 ATS/ERSARS/ALAT guidelines. Demographics and clinical and radiological data of the patients were recorded. All data recorded by researchers was evaluated by radiology and the clinical decision board. RESULTS: A total of 336 patients (253 men, 83 women, age 65.8 +/- 9.0 years) were evaluated. Of the patients with sufficient data for diag-nosis (n=300), the diagnosis was IPF in 121 (40.3%), unclassified idiopathic interstitial pneumonia in 50 (16.7%), combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) in 40 (13.3%), and lung involvement of connective tissue disease (CTD) in 16 (5.3%). When 29 patients with definite IPF features were added to the patients with CPFE, the total number of IPF patients reached 150 (50%). Rate of male sex (p<0.001), smoking history (p<0.001), and the presence of clubbing (p=0.001) were significantly high in patients with IPE None of the women <50 years and none of the men <50 years of age without a smoking history were diagnosed with IPE Presence of at least 1 of the symptoms suggestive of CTD, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and antinuclear antibody (FANA) positivity rates were significantly higher in the non-IPF group (p<0.001, p=0.029, p=0.009, respectively). CONCLUSION: The rate of IPF among patients with fibrotic ILD was 50%. In the differential diagnosis of IPF, sex, smoking habits, and the presence of clubbing are important. The presence of symptoms related to CTD, ESR elevation, and EANA positivity reduce the likelihood of IPF
