The Prediction of Court Appearance: A Study of Bail in Cleveland

    Get PDF
Bail is an ancient device designed to allow persons charged with criminal offenses to be released from jail pending their trial, while assuring the defendant\u27s later appearance in court. Every decision to release a criminal defendant prior to trial involves an evaluation of numerous factors that might affect the likelihood of his later court appearance. This note presents the results of a study of bail in Cleveland, Ohio (the Cleveland Study ), designed to aid in that evaluation by developing an objective method of predicting the later court appearance of felony defendants

Mystical strategies and performative discourse in the theologia mystica of Teresa of Avila: A Wittgensteinian analysis

The thesis argues that a Wittgensteinian approach to the 'mystical' writings of a 'mystical theologian' such as Teresa of Avila reveals that rather than exhibiting an ontological mysticism these writings are better understood as enacting what are termed 'mystical strategies' or 'performative discourse'. The notion that both Wittgenstein and Teresa employ what are termed 'therapeutic or transformational strategies' to effect change in their readers is central to its argument. In this respect the thesis concludes that their writing is fundamentally transformational in character.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

On the Birational Section Conjecture over Function Fields

The birational variant of Grothendieck's section conjecture proposes a characterisation of the rational points of a curve over a finitely generated field over Q in terms of the sections of the absolute Galois group of its function field. While the p-adic version of the birational section conjecture has been proven by Jochen Koenigsmann, and improved upon by Florian Pop, the conjecture in its original form remains very much open. One hopes to deduce the birational section conjecture over number fields from the p-adic version by invoking a local-global principle, but if this is achieved the problem remains to deduce from this that the conjecture holds over all finitely generated fields over Q. This is the problem that we address in this thesis, using an approach which is inspired by a similar result by Mohamed Saïdi concerning the section conjecture for étale fundamental groups. We prove a conditional result which says that, under the condition of finiteness of certain Shafarevich-Tate groups, the birational section conjecture holds over finitely generated fields over Q if it holds over number fields

    Optimal Property Management Strategies

This paper examines the optimal operation strategies for income properties. Specifically, the rental rate and the operating expense should be set at levels to maximize the return on investment. The results suggest that for a given demand curve of a specific rental property, there exist optimal levels of the income ratio, the operating expense ratio, and the vacancy rate. With a Cobb-Douglas demand curve, we derived closed form solutions of these optimal ratios for a given income property. The relevant local comparative statics of these ratios also are derived. These comparative statics also provide insight into the optimal building size and optimal rehabilitation decisions. An empirical case study was conducted to demonstrate how the model can be applied in real life situations.Rental Property, Vacancy Rate; Operating Strategy, Profit Optimization
