RS-Corrector: Correcting the Racial Stereotypes in Latent Diffusion Models
Recent text-conditioned image generation models have demonstrated an
exceptional capacity to produce diverse and creative imagery with high visual
quality. However, when pre-trained on billion-sized datasets randomly collected
from the Internet, where potential biased human preferences exist, these models
tend to produce images with common and recurring stereotypes, particularly for
certain racial groups. In this paper, we conduct an initial analysis of the
publicly available Stable Diffusion model and its derivatives, highlighting the
presence of racial stereotypes. These models often generate distorted or biased
images for certain racial groups, emphasizing stereotypical characteristics. To
address these issues, we propose a framework called "RS-Corrector", designed to
establish an anti-stereotypical preference in the latent space and update the
latent code for refined generated results. The correction process occurs during
the inference stage without requiring fine-tuning of the original model.
Extensive empirical evaluations demonstrate that the introduced \themodel
effectively corrects the racial stereotypes of the well-trained Stable
Diffusion model while leaving the original model unchanged.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, conferenc
TCI-Former: Thermal Conduction-Inspired Transformer for Infrared Small Target Detection
Infrared small target detection (ISTD) is critical to national security and
has been extensively applied in military areas. ISTD aims to segment small
target pixels from background. Most ISTD networks focus on designing feature
extraction blocks or feature fusion modules, but rarely describe the ISTD
process from the feature map evolution perspective. In the ISTD process, the
network attention gradually shifts towards target areas. We abstract this
process as the directional movement of feature map pixels to target areas
through convolution, pooling and interactions with surrounding pixels, which
can be analogous to the movement of thermal particles constrained by
surrounding variables and particles. In light of this analogy, we propose
Thermal Conduction-Inspired Transformer (TCI-Former) based on the theoretical
principles of thermal conduction. According to thermal conduction differential
equation in heat dynamics, we derive the pixel movement differential equation
(PMDE) in the image domain and further develop two modules: Thermal
Conduction-Inspired Attention (TCIA) and Thermal Conduction Boundary Module
(TCBM). TCIA incorporates finite difference method with PMDE to reach a
numerical approximation so that target body features can be extracted. To
further remove errors in boundary areas, TCBM is designed and supervised by
boundary masks to refine target body features with fine boundary details.

An innovative timber-steel hybrid beam consisting of glulam mechanically reinforced by means of steel rod: Analytical and preliminary numerical investigations
Abstract There is an increasing interest in large-dimensional timber structural elements within the construction sector in order to fulfil the combined demand of sustainability, open spaces and architectural flexibility. Current timber technology allows for efficient production of long-size beams, but many problems are related to their overall high costs due to difficulties in transportation, manufacturing on site and handling during the mounting phase. Hence, the aim of this work is to propose and study an innovative timber-steel hybrid structural element composed of shorter pieces of beams connected and reinforced by means of a system consisting of steel shear keys and steel rods. The small timber elements and steel devices can be prefabricated with low costs and easily assembled into large elements at the construction sites. The proposed system can also be used for retrofitting of existing timber members when it is necessary to increase their strength, stiffness and ductility. The structural behavior of the proposed system was therefore studied both as a connection and as a retrofitting technique, which were analyzed via two types of hybrid beams, one with a splice at mid-span and one without, separately. A simple glulam beam with the same geometrical characteristics of the two hybrid structures was also investigated for the comparison of the structural behavior. The analytical results show that the hybrid beams with and without splice have both obtained significant increasement in the stiffness, strength and ductility. The numerical analyses are limited in the elastic stage due to the elastic mechanical properties assigned to the structural components. The numerical results show good agreement with the analytical ones for each type of beam in terms of the stiffness in the elastic stage. Finally, the influence of the parameters such as the distance between shear keys, slip modulus of shear keys and diameter of rod, on the structural behavior of hybrid beams is discussed in this paper
Multiferroic Magnon Spin-Torque Based Reconfigurable Logic-In-Memory
Magnons, bosonic quasiparticles carrying angular momentum, can flow through
insulators for information transmission with minimal power dissipation.
However, it remains challenging to develop a magnon-based logic due to the lack
of efficient electrical manipulation of magnon transport. Here we present a
magnon logic-in-memory device in a spin-source/multiferroic/ferromagnet
structure, where multiferroic magnon modes can be electrically excited and
controlled. In this device, magnon information is encoded to ferromagnetic bits
by the magnon-mediated spin torque. We show that the ferroelectric polarization
can electrically modulate the magnon spin-torque by controlling the
non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure in multiferroic bismuth ferrite thin
films with coupled antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders. By manipulating
the two coupled non-volatile state variables (ferroelectric polarization and
magnetization), we further demonstrate reconfigurable logic-in-memory
operations in a single device. Our findings highlight the potential of
multiferroics for controlling magnon information transport and offer a pathway
towards room-temperature voltage-controlled, low-power, scalable magnonics for
in-memory computing
Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst
The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been
monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT).
Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source
throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and
search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of
line-like features is, however, found up to . In the absence of
any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of
the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying
two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with
, and peak luminosity of which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous
X-ray source hosting a neutron star.Comment: publishe
