Optical Spectroscopy of K-selected Extremely Red Galaxies
We have obtained spectroscopic redshifts for 24 red galaxies from a sample
with median Ks=18.7 and F814W - Ks > 4, using the Keck telescope. These
EROshave high resolution morphologies from HST (Yan & Thompson 2003). Among the
24 redshifts, the majority (92%) are at . We derived the
rest-frame J-band luminosity function at . Our result
suggests that the luminosity evolution between bright EROs at and the
present-day L massive galaxies is at most about 0.7 magnitude. Combining
the morphologies and deep spectroscopy revealed the following properties: (1)
86% of the spectra have absorption features from old stars, suggesting that the
dominant stellar populations seen in the rest-frame UV are old stars. 50% of
the sources have pure absorption lines, while the remaining 50% have emission
lines, indicating recent star formation. We conclude that the color criterion
for EROs is very effective in selecting old stellar populations at ,
and a large fraction of these systems with prominent old stellar populations
also have recent star formation. (2) The 12 emission line systems have the same
number of disk and bulge galaxies as in the remaining 12 pure absorption line
systems. We conclude that spectral classes do not have a simple, direct
correspondence with morphological types. (3) Three EROs could be isolated, pure
passively evolving early-type galaxies at . This implies that only a
small fraction (10%--15%) of early-type galaxies are formed in a rapid burst of

Estimation of the pre-burning condition of human remains in forensic contexts
The determination of the original condition of human remains prior to burning is critical since it may facilitate the reconstruction of circumstances surrounding death in forensic cases. Although the use of heat-induced bone changes is not a completely reliable proxy for determining pre-burning conditions, it is not completely devoid of potential, as we can observe a clear difference in the occurrence of such features between the fleshed and dry bones. In order to quantify this difference and determine its true value for forensic research, the frequencies of heat-induced warping and thumbnail fractures were documented on modern cremations of cadavers from recently deceased individuals and from the cremations of skeletons previously inhumed. The effect of age, sex, time span from death to cremation, duration and temperature of combustion on those frequencies was statistically investigated. Results demonstrated that the heat-induced features were significantly more frequent in the sample of cadavers. In addition, warping was determined to be the most useful indicator of the pre-burning condition of human remains. Temperature of combustion was the only variable having a significant effect on the frequency of both features, suggesting that fluctuation of temperature, along with collagen preservation and recrystallization of the inorganic phase, is paramount for their occurrence. Both warping and thumbnail fractures may eventually be used for the estimation of the pre-burning condition of human remains in lack of other indicators, but their reliability is far from absolute. Ideally, such inference must be supported by other data such as skeletal representation, objects or defleshing marks on the bones

Air quality impacts of using overnight electricity generation to cahrge plug-in hybrid electric vehicles for daytime use
The air quality impacts of replacing 20% of the gasoline powered light duty vehicle miles
traveled with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the region served by the Pennsylvania,
New Jersey, Maryland classic grid are examined. Unutilized, base-load nighttime electricity
generating capacity is assumed to charge PHEVs that would subsequently be used during urban
commutes. The net impact of this scenario on the emissions of precursors to the formation of
ozone is an increase in nitrogen oxide (NOx), volatile organic compound (VOC) and CO
emissions from electricity generating units during nighttime hours, and a greater decrease in
NOx, VOC and CO from mobile emissions in urban areas during daytime hours. The changes
in maximum daily 8 h ozone concentrations, predicted using a regional photochemical model
(CAMx), are decreases in ozone concentrations between 2 and 6 ppb that are widespread across
the urban areas, and increases in ozone concentrations of up to 8 ppb in highly localized areas.
Air quality indicators beyond maximum daily ozone concentration are also evaluated, and in
general indicate air quality improvements associated with the use of PHEVs. However, a
limited number of air quality indicators worsened with the use of PHEVs, suggesting that
overall impacts of the use of PHEVs will be complex.Mechanical Engineerin
Measurements of Ultrasonic Scattering from Near-Surface Flaws
In ultrasonic NDE measurements the detection of subsurface flaws is of practical importance, especially flaws too far from the surface to be detected by eddy current methods and yet close enough to the surface for the flaw-surface interaction to be important. In this paper we report experimental results of ultrasonic scattering measurements of subsurface flaws in the presence of a fluid-solid interface and compare these results with theoretical calculations of subsurface flaw scattering. Comparison of the absolute value of the scattering amplitude in terms of frequency, flaw-to-surface distance, ultrasonic mode and scattering angle will be made for an oblate spheroidal void in the interior of bulk titanium and for a spherical inclusion near the surface of a thermoplastic sample. Results of applying the one-dimensional inverse Born algorithm to the sizing of near-surface flaws are also reported.

Language-Naive Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) Judge Relations Between Relations in a Conceptual Matching-to-Sample Task
Three chimpanzees with a history of conditional and numeric token training spontaneously matched relations between relations under conditions of nondifferential reinforcement. Heretofore, this conceptual ability was demonstrated only in language-trained chimpanzees. The performance levels of the language-naive animals in this study, however, were equivalent to those of a 4th animal—Sarah—whose history included language training and analogical problem solving. There was no evidence that associative factors mediated successful performance in any of the animals. Prior claims of a profound disparity between language-trained and language-naive chimpanzees apparently can be attributed to prior experience with arbitrary tokens consistently associated with abstract relations and not language per se
Effect of Straw on the Behaviour of Growing Pigs
The effects of straw on the behaviour of young growing pigs were studied in two experiments. In Experiment 1, group of three pigs, aged about 7 weeks, were housed in raised decks with or without straw bedding. Time-lapse video recording showed no major differences between treatments in the amount or daily pattern of overall activity and feeding. Detailed observations showed that bedding reduced the incidence of rooting and chewing on pen-mates, but had little effect on other social activities such as mounting and aggressive biting. Experiment 2 compared groups of eight growing pigs aged about 10 weeks, housed in floor pens with or without a small amount of straw provided daily in a rack. Pigs with straw concentrated more of their daily activity into the period when straw was fresh, but the total amount of overall activity and time spent feeding were not affected. Rooting and chewing of pen-mates were the only social activities reduced by the provision of fresh straw. In these studies, where straw was not required to compensate for deficiencies such as low temperatures or hunger, the one major function of straw was to provide a stimulus and outlet for rooting and chewing, with a resulting reduction in such activities directed at pen-mates
Price Discovery and the Accuracy of Consolidated Data Feeds in the U.S. Equity Markets
Both the scientific community and the popular press have paid much attention
to the speed of the Securities Information Processor, the data feed
consolidating all trades and quotes across the US stock market. Rather than the
speed of the Securities Information Processor, or SIP, we focus here on its
accuracy. Relying on Trade and Quote data, we provide various measures of SIP
latency relative to high-speed data feeds between exchanges, known as direct
feeds. We use first differences to highlight not only the divergence between
the direct feeds and the SIP, but also the fundamental inaccuracy of the SIP.
We find that as many as 60 percent or more of trades are reported out of
sequence for stocks with high trade volume, therefore skewing simple measures
such as returns. While not yet definitive, this analysis supports our
preliminary conclusion that the underlying infrastructure of the SIP is
currently unable to keep pace with the trading activity in today's stock

HST Imaging Polarimetry of the Gravitational Lens FSC10214+4724
We present imaging polarimetry of the extremely luminous, redshift 2.3 IRAS
source FSC10214+4724. The observations were obtained with HST's Faint Object
Camera in the F437M filter, which is free of strong emission lines. The 0.7
arcsec long arc is unresolved to 0.04 arcsec FWHM in the transverse direction,
and has an integrated polarization of 28 +/- 3 percent, in good agreement with
ground-based observations. The polarization position angle varies along the arc
by up to 35 deg. The overall position angle is 62 +/- 3 deg east of north. No
counterimage is detected to B = 27.5 mag (), giving an observed arc to
counterimage flux ratio greater than 250, considerably greater than the flux
ratio of 100 measured previously in the I-band. This implies that the
configuration of the object in the source plane at the B-band is different from
that at I-band, and/or that the lensing galaxy is dusty.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Astronomical
