    The functions of visual management

    Visual Management has been evolving and effectively employed in some manufacturing and service organisations for a long time. In order to facilitate a cross-industrial learning process and to advance in detailed research the understanding of how the Visual Management concept may serve in an organisation is necessary. The aim of this paper is to identify Visual Management functions and the theoretical base for the construction industry. A detailed literature review and an analysis of the findings were performed accordingly. The necessity of a holistic approach in order to make more use of the Visual Management process and some research opportunities were identified

    UNDER THE CELLULOID SKIN: A Social Semiotic Analysis of Tunç Okan’s Debut Film OtobĂŒs

    Cinema is an externalised, materialised form of collective memory in which one can find experiences, desires, traumas, ideas, hopes and imaginations of the given society. One can - with the utilisation of the right set of tools and methods - learn a lot about a society by studying its cinema. In this context, this thesis offers a social semiotic analysis of the debut film OtobĂŒs (The Bus, 1974) by the Turkish film director Tunç Okan. The film, which follows the dystopian journey of nine Turkish workers from Turkey to Sweden who are cheated by an international human trafficking gang, offers a very rich set of symbols that constructs an alternative socio-historical record from the point of view of other ignored other, namely the immigrants of whom Okan himself is one. This thesis -by utilising the Marxist social semiotic approaches of Robert Hodge and Gunther Kress- attempts to make the cinematographic signifiers visible and connect these signifiers to the socio-historical signifieds. In relation to the analysis of the film the thesis also introduces a new concept transboundary cinema in order to avoid shortcomings in the existing terminology dealing with the multi-transitional structure of the film and to be able to recognise the films unique qualities

    Minimizing value-at-risk in the single-machine total weighted tardiness problem

    The vast majority of the machine scheduling literature focuses on deterministic problems, in which all data is known with certainty a priori. This may be a reasonable assumption when the variability in the problem parameters is low. However, as variability in the parameters increases incorporating this uncertainty explicitly into a scheduling model is essential to mitigate the resulting adverse effects. In this paper, we consider the celebrated single-machine total weighted tardiness (TWT) problem in the presence of uncertain problem parameters. We impose a probabilistic constraint on the random TWT and introduce a risk-averse stochastic programming model. In particular, the objective of the proposed model is to find a non-preemptive static job processing sequence that minimizes the value-at-risk (VaR) measure on the random TWT at a specified confidence level. Furthermore, we develop a lower bound on the optimal VaR that may also benefit alternate solution approaches in the future. In this study, we implement a tabu-search heuristic to obtain reasonably good feasible solutions and present results to demonstrate the effect of the risk parameter and the value of the proposed model with respect to a corresponding risk-neutral approach

    Visual Management in Brazilian Construction Companies: Taxonomy and Guidelines for Implementation

    Visual management (VM) is the managerial strategy of consciously integrating visual tools in workspaces with the aim of increasing transparency on construction sites. Several VM tools and approaches that had been originally developed in the manufacturing context were implemented in construction. However, research on the application of VM in construction as a managerial strategy is scarce. This paper aims to investigate and classify the types of visual devices that can be used in construction sites through multiple case studies carried out in nine construction companies actively implementing VM. It also discusses strategies for the implementation of VM in construction. The main contributions of this investigation are: (1) a VM tools taxonomy that can be used to identify VM application opportunities, providing a basis for evaluating the level of VM implementation in construction; and (2) identification of critical factors for the implementation and various features of the VM strategy in construction

    Fate and effect of quaternary ammonium compounds in biological systems

    Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are ubiquitous contaminants found worldwide in both engineered and natural systems. QACs are toxic to aquatic organisms and cause co-selection for antibiotic resistance, thus providing a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, as well as antibiotic resistance genes in QAC-polluted environments. The objectives of the research presented here were to: a) systematically assess the fate and toxicity of QACs using quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR); b) evaluate the biotransformation potential of QACs under aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic conditions; and c) assess the potential toxicity of QACs biotransformation products. Nine QACs, belonging to three homologous groups -- monoalkonium, dialkonium and benzalkonium chlorides -- were the target QACs. The QACs critical micelle concentration (CMC) was determined. Then, the CMC was used as a descriptor to derive relationships between QAC structure and partitioning to biosolids as well as acute MicrotoxÂź toxicity. QACs with low CMCs had a relatively high adsorption affinity for biosolids and a lower toxicity than QACs with higher CMCs, which suggests that QACs that are more mobile and more (bio)available are more toxic. The biotransformation potential of benzalkonium chlorides (BAC) -- the most commonly used QACs found in engineered and natural biological systems -- under aerobic, methanogenic, nitrate reducing, and fermentative conditions was evaluated using bioenergetics and batch bioassays. The aerobic BAC biotransformation involved sequential dealkylation and debenzylation steps resulting in the formation of benzyl dimethyl amine, and dimethyl amine, respectively. The bacterial community involved in the aerobic BAC degradation was mainly composed of species belonging to the Pseudomonas genus. All QACs tested were recalcitrant under methanogenic conditions and inhibited methanogenesis at and above 25 mg QAC/L. Under nitrate reducing and fermentative conditions, BAC was transformed to alkyldimethyl amines via an abiotic reaction known as modified Hofmann degradation and a biotic reaction known as fumarate addition, respectively. Both reactions are based on a mechanism known as nucleophilic substitution. The gradual depletion of these fossil fuels reserves and efforts to combat pollution and greenhouse gas emissions have generated a considerable interest in using alternative sources of energy. Ethanol used in the hydrogen production process by steam reforming. The purpose of this work was to design a high performance catalyst for the production of hydrogen from steam reforming of ethanol. Ethanol steam reforming reaction is an endothermic reaction of ethanol with water to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The different ZnO loading supported SiO2 catalyst and Cu promoted ZnO/SiO2 catalysts were prepared single step sol-gel method with different Cu loading. All catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET surface area measurements and pore diameter analysis. BET surface area decreased and average pore diameter increased as the ZnO loading increased. Based on the XRD findings, it seems that zinc silicate crystallite phase is not formed under the preparation conditions used in this dissertation. The activity and selectivity tests of all catalysts were performed in a packed bed reactor with reaction temperature between 300 and 500oC. The performances of ZnO/SiO2 catalysts in ethanol steam reforming reaction were investigated as a function of ZnO loading. Cu catalysts are known as active catalysts for ethanol dehydrogenation. As the temperature was increased, the conversion increased and reached a maximum at 500oC for all Cu loadings

    Visual controls at the workface of road construction and maintenance : Preliminary report

    Visual Management (VM) is a fundamental element of the lean production system that relies on the effectiveness of sensory communication to realise the lean production/construction goals. VM can be implemented by following certain frameworks in an incremental fashion. Visual controls are one of the main tools of VM that are used to limit and guide process outcomes. They are generally adopted in production management, process, safety, quality, and maintenance management efforts. VM and visual controls have extensively been an important part of lean construction initiatives for a while. Their implementation is also envisioned to be relevant to highway construction and maintenance projects. A set of critical points, general recommendations and possible areas of implementation for VM and visual controls identified from both research and practical experience are presented in this report
