    Welfare assessment: correlations and integration between a Qualitative Behavioural Assessment and a clinical/health protocol applied in veal calves farms

    This study is aimed at finding correlations and possible integration among Qualitative Behavioural Assessment (QBA) and a specific protocol of clinical/health evaluation. Both welfare assessment methods were based on direct animal observation and were applied in 24 Italian veal calves farms at 3 weeks (wks) of rearing. Principal component analysis (PCA) summarized 20 QBA descriptors on two main components (PC1 and PC2) with eigenvalues above 4 and explaining 29.6 and 20.3% of the variation respectively. PCA on residuals obtained after correcting for housing condition yielded highly similar results, indicating that the rearing environment of the calves was not an important determinant of the observer reliability of QBA.     Posterior atlanto-axial fixation with polyaxial C1 lateral mass screws and C2 pars screws

    Purpose: C1-C2 instability or painful osteoarthritis are recognised indications for posterior atlanto-axial fixation. In the traditional trans-articular C1-C2 screw fixation, up to 20% of patients cannot have safe placement of bilateral screws in the event of a medially located vertebral artery and a straight screw trajectory in the sagittal plane. The more recently developed C1-C2 fixation technique with individual C1 lateral mass screws and converging C2 pars screws can be employed in case of a medially located vertebral artery and has comparable biomechanical strength. This is a prospective observational study to investigate the advantages, the safety, and the drawbacks of posterior atlanto-axial fixation with polyaxial C1 lateral mass screws and C2 pars screws. Methods: Twelve consecutive patients with C1-2 instability (n = 11) and painful osteoarthritis (n = 1) underwent a posterior atlanto-axial fixation with polyaxial C1 lateral mass screws and C2 pars screws. The average follow-up was 16months and all patients reached the 12-month follow-up. Findings: No hardware failure occurred in any of the patients. Correct screw placement and construct stability was found in all 12 patients (100%) at 6 and 12months after surgery. Mean neck pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS) was 2.1 at 6months and 2.0 at 12months. Only transient complications were observed: one patient presented with progressive intestinal herniation through the iliac crest scar; one suffered from severe pain at the posterior iliac crest for 3 months and three patients complained of annoying pain/dysaesthesia in the C2 dermatome for 3-6months after surgery. Conclusion: This study confirms that posterior atlanto-axial fixation with polyaxial C1 lateral mass screws and C2 pars screws is a safe and effective surgical option in the treatment of atlanto-axial instability or painful osteoarthriti

    Early outcome of anatomical lung resection for non-small cell lung cancer in the elderly

    OBJECTIVE Surgery is the mainstay of early-stage lung cancer treatment. However, since life expectancy is constantly increasing, we wanted to investigate whether this principle also applies to elderly (≥70-year-old) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS We analyzed a prospectively maintained database on anatomical lung resections at our institute. Patients were divided in two groups: <70 years and ≥70 years (elderly). Outcome indicators were postoperative cardiopulmonary complications rate and 30-day readmission rate. Baseline and surgical characteristics were compared by mean of t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi2 and Fisher exact tests. Propensity score matching was performed to account for differences between groups in the outcome's analysis. RESULTS We selected 241 patients with lung cancer (2017-2021) who underwent anatomical lung resections. Median age was 70.5 (IQR: 64-76). 133 patients (54%) aged 70 and above. Patients and surgical characteristics (comorbidities, lung function, performance status, type and extension of lung resection and surgical approach) were similar among groups, except for atrial fibrillation (p=0.01) and previous cancer history (p<0.0001) which were more frequent in the elderly group. Non-elderly patients were more frequently active smokers (p<0.0001). Cardiopulmonary complications rate was 23%, 30-day readmission rate was 12.6%. We did not observe any significant difference in all the short-term outcome indicators between the elderly and the younger counterpart. Particularly, complications rate (p=0.91) and 30-day readmission (p=0.84) did not differ between groups. CONCLUSIONS In our series, short-term outcomes are not compromised in elderly patients. The evolution in surgical strategy and expertise contribute to offer surgical resection with curative intent for lung cancer to a large spectrum of patients

    Validity and reliability of a photoelectric cells system for the evaluation of change of direction and lateral jumping abilities in collegiate basketball athletes

    The validity and reliability of the Optojump system were investigated for jumping height and flight time in vertical jump tests. Conversely, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the Optojump system for measuring contact time and lateral displacement in change of direction and lateral jump tests. Thirty basketball collegiate athletes were tested on two 10 m sprints with a 60° (COD60) or 180° (COD180) change of direction, lateral controlled (CLRJ) and maximal (MLRJ) rebound jump, and lateral countermovement (LCMJ) and squat (LSJ) jump with the concomitant use of two force plates and the Optojump system for the measurement of contact time in COD60, COD180, CLRJ, MLRJ, and lateral jumping distance in all the lateral jump tests. Almost perfect coefficients (r ≥ 0.95) emerged for contact time in COD60, COD180, CLRJ, MLRJ, although a systematic bias was found for COD60 (-0.01 s). Good-to-excellent reliability was found for almost all the measurements of contact time and lateral jumping distance for change of direction and lateral jump tests. Therefore, the use of Optojump system for testing change of direction and lateral jumping abilities should be executed with caution, avoiding misinterpretation of data

    © Springer Science+Business Media New York 2015Among noncoding RNAs, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been most extensively studied, and their biology has repeatedly been proven critical for central nervous system pathological conditions. The diagnostic value of several miRNAs was appraised in pediatric dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) using miRNA microarrays and receiving operating characteristic curves analyses. Overall, five pediatric DNETs were studied. As controls, 17 samples were used: the FirstChoice Human Brain Reference RNA and 16 samples from deceased children who underwent autopsy and were not present with any brain malignancy. The miRNA extraction was carried out using the mirVANA miRNA Isolation Kit, while the experimental approach included miRNA microarrays covering 1211 miRNAs. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed to validate the expression profiles of miR-1909* and miR-3138 in all samples initially screened with miRNA microarrays. Our findings indicated that miR-3138 might act as a tumor suppressor gene when down-regulated and miR-1909* as a putative oncogenic molecule when up-regulated in pediatric DNETs compared to the control cohort. Subsequently, both miRNA signatures might serve as putative diagnostic biomarkers for pediatric DNETs.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Good character education can have a characteristic impact on students. each student has a different character. Various ways done by the school in character education based on kemendiknas, including State Elementary School 156 Pekanbaru. Problems that arise in the field is there is no method that can determine the character of the students so that the school's special teachers can not understand precisely the characters in the students. The lack of understanding of the character of the students makes the vision of the school mission has not been seen so that character education in SDN 156 Pekanbaru has not been right target. Therefore, it needs to be done grouping student character in SDN 156 Pekanbaru with the aim of school know character owned by students in school. The K-Means algorithm is used to classify the character of the students with the number of clusters as much as 2 using the six attributes of characters studied: Honest, disciplined, confident, caring, creative and responsible with 130 student data. The results of K-Means manual calculation with sample data 10 data from 130 data that is weak character (C1) amounted to 1 student and weak character of 9 students, this result is same with calculation executed by RapidMiner application. Test results with 130 data using RapidMiner resulted in the number of students with weak character 26 students with the average centroid (0.665) with caring and creative characters. While students who have strong character 104 students with average value of centroid (0.900) with honest character, discipline, confidence, and responsibility. The result of character grouping based on class cluster position in RapidMiner is grade 3 which has weak character (C1) 8 students from 35 students, grade 4 is 8 out of 24 students, 5th grade is 1 of 17 students and grade 6 is 9 of 46 students. While clusters with strong characters (C2) class 3 amounted to 27 students, grade 4 amounted to 24 students, class 5 amounted to 16 students, and grade 6 amounted to 37 students. From the results of this study is expected Strong characters can be developed by school continue to perform habits which involves the students so that the characters in the students can be seen while for the caring and creative characters so as not to be weak then the school always provide guidance to the students and give examples of good habits and activities that can be followed by students in school
