The Strongest 100 Point Radio Sources in the LMC at 1.4 GHz
We present the 100 strongest 1.4 GHz point sources from a new mosaic image in
the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The observations making up
the mosaic were made over a ten year period and were combined with Parkes
single dish data at 1.4 GHz to complete the image for short spacing. An initial
list of co-identifications within 10" at 0.843, 4.8 and 8.6 GHz consisted of
2682 sources. Elimination of extended objects and artifact noise allowed the
creation of a refined list containing 1988 point sources. Most of these are
presumed to be background objects seen through the LMC; a small portion may
represent compact H II regions, young SNRs and radio planetary nebulae. For the
1988 point sources we find a preliminary average spectral index of -0.53 and
present a 1.4 GHz image showing source location in the direction of the LMC.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Trauma Therapists in Israel: A Qualitative Study into Personal, Familial and Societal Sources of A Priori Countertransference
What distinguishes therapists who enabled their traumatized clients to be fully heard and appropriately address their traumatic histories, from their no less generally competent and empathic colleagues in whose workrooms silence reigns with regard to (interpersonal) traumatization? This question has given rise to the author's conceptualization of a priori countertransference that may determine therapists' attitudes and perception even before meeting actual clients. The life stories of participating trauma therapists and forty years of an English language professional journal, published in Israel, have been analyzed in order to uncover and map personal, familial and societal factors that may contribute to a priori countertransference.
The interviewed therapists work with Holocaust survivors and the Second Generation and/or people who have had to endure sexual abuse. These specializations present two examples of devastating, public and secret, interpersonal traumatization. It has been widely documented that these, and related traumas have, over decades, been ignored in otherwise satisfactory psychotherapy. The societal context – historically, trauma awareness has fluctuated greatly both within the mental health profession and society at large – is here provided by Israel, where both the participating therapists and the author live. It provides an excellent study ground for societal influences because it is a multicultural society and has not yet achieved existential security. Thus it can serve as a microcosm of challenges therapists may face anywhere.
Hopefully, the outlined sources of possible a priori countertransference will provide a structure on which to base ongoing self-monitoring by practicing therapists as well as professional training programs
Tilt Modulus and Angle-Dependent Flux Lattice Melting in the Lowest Landau Level Approximation
For a clean high-T superconductor, we analyze the Lawrence-Doniach free
energy in a tilted magnetic field within the lowest Landau level (LLL)
approximation. The free energy maps onto that of a strictly -axis field, but
with a reduced interlayer coupling. We use this result to calculate the tilt
modulus of a vortex lattice and vortex liquid. The vortex contribution
to can be expressed in terms of the squared -axis Josephson plasmon
frequency . The transverse component of the field has very
little effect on the position of the melting curve.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

The Self Model and the Conception of Biological Identity in Immunology
The self/non-self model, first proposed by F.M. Burnet, has dominated immunology for sixty years now. According to this model, any foreign element will trigger an immune reaction in an organism, whereas endogenous elements will not, in normal circumstances, induce an immune reaction. In this paper we show that the self/non-self model is no longer an appropriate explanation of experimental data in immunology, and that this inadequacy may be rooted in an excessively strong metaphysical conception of biological identity. We suggest that another hypothesis, one based on the notion of continuity, gives a better account of immune phenomena. Finally, we underscore the mapping between this metaphysical deflation from self to continuity in immunology and the philosophical debate between substantialism and empiricism about identity
