Learning Basic (Reading) Skills K-12
Seldom in the history of American education has an issue received more public attention than the reading question is receiving today. Such an abiding concern about a basic skill is almost ironic in view of the fact that the last several decades have brought a flood of innovations in curriculum design and approaches to instruction. Prominent figures such as John Holt, Herbert Kohl, Neil Postman, Charles Weingartner, William Glasser, Ivan Illich, Carl Rogers, Alvin Toffler, and many more have called continually for radical school reform. Relevance and change have been by-words in virtually every piece of recent literature pertaining to education. A wide and largely receptive audience has heard call after call for open schools, ungradedness, team teaching, inquiry, process-oriented approaches to instruction, the use of real-world materials (newspapers, magazines, paper-back books, non-print media) in the classroom, community resources as working laboratories for students, and drastic changes in curriculum design and course offerings
The purpose of this research is to know the understanding about the cross of Christbased on John 19:17-25. This research was focused on Rawamangun CongregationChurch, East Jakarta. This research has three main basic indicators, the definition of the cross of Christbased on the Greece as the original language in the New Testament, the cause achange of the cross in Christianity and the use of symbol of cross that isincompatible with the Bible especially that derived from paganism. This research is divided into two parts, theoretical research and field research. Theresult of the theoretical research is about the notion of the cross of Christ based onGreek as the original language of the New Testament Bible, the cause a change ofthe cross in Christianity and the usage of the cross which is incompatible with theBible, especially from the unbelief. This research consisted of three parts: (1) What is the original word of cross in theBible? Some experts stated that the word of cross in the Bible originated from theword βstaurosβ and βxulon.βThese words have similar meaning that is a stud insteadof cross; (2) Definition of the cause a change of the cross in Christianity. Expertsstated that cross is a religious symbol that existed before the Christianity appeared. The symbol of cross is not used by the early church. Until to the 3rd century,Constantine, sun worshiper, brought symbol of the cross to Christianity as his statedvow, and; (3) The use of symbol of cross that is incompatible with the Bibleespecially that derived from paganism is something that is not very relevant becausecross is not a tool that is charged to Christ, then His people also do not use and lift upthe death tool that actually was not charged to Christ. The result of this research by using questionnaire that was shared to 40 GMAHKmembers of Rawamangun Congregation, where this questionnaire consisted of 24statements, yielded a data that can be concluded that the respondents have a goodunderstanding in answering the indicators. This happened because before theresearcher shared the questionnaire, firstly, the researcher explained about this lessonin a seminar
A systematic review of interventions in primary care to improve health literacy for chronic disease behavioral risk factors
Background: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions used in primary care to improve health literacy for change in smoking, nutrition, alcohol, physical activity and weight (SNAPW).
Methods: A systematic review of intervention studies that included outcomes for health literacy and SNAPW behavioral risk behaviors implemented in primary care settings.
We searched the Cochrane Library, Johanna Briggs Institute, Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Psychinfo, Web of Science, Scopus, APAIS, Australasian Medical Index, Google Scholar, Community of Science and four targeted journals (Patient Education and Counseling, Health Education and Behaviour, American Journal of Preventive Medicine and Preventive Medicine).
Study inclusion criteria: Adults over 18βyears; undertaken in a primary care setting within an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) country; interventions with at least one measure of health literacy and promoting positive change in smoking, nutrition, alcohol, physical activity and/or weight; measure at least one outcome associated with health literacy and report a SNAPW outcome; and experimental and quasi-experimental studies, cohort, observational and controlled and non-controlled before and after studies.
Papers were assessed and screened by two researchers (JT, AW) and uncertain or excluded studies were reviewed by a third researcher (MH). Data were extracted from the included studies by two researchers (JT, AW). Effectiveness studies were quality assessed. A typology of interventions was thematically derived from the studies by grouping the SNAPW interventions into six broad categories: individual motivational interviewing and counseling; group education; multiple interventions (combination of interventions); written materials; telephone coaching or counseling; and computer or web based interventions. Interventions were classified by intensity of contact with the subjects (Highββ₯β8 points of contact/hours; Moderate \u3e3 and \u3c8; Lowββ€β3 points of contact hours) and setting (primary health, community or other).
Studies were analyzed by intervention category and whether significant positive changes in SNAPW and health literacy outcomes were reported.
Results: 52 studies were included. Many different intervention types and settings were associated with change in health literacy (73% of all studies) and change in SNAPW (75% of studies). More low intensity interventions reported significant positive outcomes for SNAPW (43% of studies) compared with high intensity interventions (33% of studies). More interventions in primary health care than the community were effective in supporting smoking cessation whereas the reverse was true for diet and physical activity interventions.
Conclusion: Group and individual interventions of varying intensity in primary health care and community settings are useful in supporting sustained change in health literacy for change in behavioral risk factors. Certain aspects of risk behavior may be better handled in clinical settings while others more effectively in the community. Our findings have implications for the design of programs
