Not through confusion or fear: motivational approaches for preparing Physician Associate students for post graduate study and beyond.

The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.This review paper explores the underlying principles of motivating Physician Associate students during both matriculation and progression points of post-graduate study. Pertinent notions of the teacher student relationship and its complexities are examined against the literature, aligned to constructionist learning theories. The impact of such motivational expressions by Higher Education teachers sets the scene for future approaches to deep learning that can impact upon safe and compassionate clinical practice. Educational novices are viewed to be in the ideal position within Higher Education and external stakeholders to explore and design an articulated curriculum that is fit for the 21st century healthcare economies. The correlation between effective motivation and enthusiasm is considered in line with student experiences and expectations resulting in safe effective patient care. The paper suggests that Higher Education teachers would better meet student expectations with more awareness of student entry level behaviour
Early Help Mechanisms – A Mere Fad Or A Ground Breaking Reformation To Child Protection Systems?
Early intervention and preventative work with children, young people and families is not a new phenomenon. It is authenticated, for example, through the introduction of Sure Start Local Area programmes which were initially established between 1999 and 2002 to support families with children aged 0-4 who resided in areas of disadvantage. Initially, 524 dedicated built children centres were established with a further 3,500 developed from 2007 onwards. Their core purpose (DE, 2012) provides outreach facilities, integrated early education, parenting programmes, child care and health care and family support services through early intervention, thus formally enshrining the professional relationships between the disciplines of health and education (Williams and Churchill, 2006)
The null energy condition and instability
We extend previous work showing that violation of the null energy condition
implies instability in a broad class of models, including gauge theories with
scalar and fermionic matter as well as any perfect fluid. Simple examples are
given to illustrate these results. The role of causality in our results is
discussed. Finally, we extend the fluid results to more general systems in
thermal equilibrium. When applied to the dark energy, our results imply that w

Zero Temperature Insulator-Metal Transition in Doped Manganites
We study the transition at T=0 from a ferromagnetic insulating to a
ferromagnetic metallic phase in manganites as a function of hole doping using
an effective low-energy model Hamiltonian proposed by us recently. The model
incorporates the quantum nature of the dynamic Jahn-Teller(JT) phonons strongly
coupled to orbitally degenerate electrons as well as strong Coulomb correlation
effects and leads naturally to the coexistence of localized (JT polaronic) and
band-like electronic states. We study the insulator-metal transition as a
function of doping as well as of the correlation strength U and JT gain in
energy E_{JT}, and find, for realistic values of parameters, a ground state
phase diagram in agreement with experiments. We also discuss how several other
features of manganites as well as differences in behaviour among manganites can
be understood in terms of our model.Comment: To be published in Europhysics Letter
Ultrahigh Bandwidth Spin Noise Spectroscopy: Detection of Large g-Factor Fluctuations in Highly n-Doped GaAs
We advance all optical spin noise spectroscopy (SNS) in semiconductors to
detection bandwidths of several hundred gigahertz by employing an ingenious
scheme of pulse trains from ultrafast laser oscillators as an optical probe.
The ultrafast SNS technique avoids the need for optical pumping and enables
nearly perturbation free measurements of extremely short spin dephasing times.
We employ the technique to highly n-doped bulk GaAs where magnetic field
dependent measurements show unexpected large g-factor fluctuations.
Calculations suggest that such large g-factor fluctuations do not necessarily
result from extrinsic sample variations but are intrinsically present in every
doped semiconductor due to the stochastic nature of the dopant distribution.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Evidence for charge localization in the ferromagnetic phase of La_(1-x)Ca_(x)MnO_3 from High real-space-resolution x-ray diffraction
High real-space-resolution atomic pair distribution functions of
La_(1-x)Ca_(x)MnO_3 (x=0.12, 0.25 and 0.33) have been measured using
high-energy x-ray powder diffraction to study the size and shape of the MnO_6
octahedron as a function of temperature and doping. In the paramagnetic
insulating phase we find evidence for three distinct bond-lengths (~ 1.88, 1.95
and 2.15A) which we ascribe to Mn^{4+}-O, Mn^{3+}-O short and Mn^{3+}-O long
bonds respectively. In the ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phase, for x=0.33 and
T=20K, we find a single Mn-O bond-length; however, as the metal-insulator
transition is approached either by increasing T or decreasing x, intensity
progressively appears around r=2.15 and in the region 1.8 - 1.9A suggesting the
appearance of Mn^{3+}-O long bonds and short Mn^{4+}-O bonds. This is strong
evidence that charge localized and delocalized phases coexist close to the

Synthesis of super bright indium phosphide colloidal quantum dots through thermal diffusion
Indium phosphide based quantum dots have emerged in recent years as alternatives to traditional heavy metal (cadmium, lead) based materials suitable for biomedical application due to their non-toxic nature. The major barrier to this application, is their low photoluminescent quantum yield in aqueous environments (typically < 5%). Here we present a synthetic method for InP/ZnS quantum dots, utilizing a controlled cooling step for equilibration of zinc sulfide across the core, resulting in a photoluminescent quantum yield as high as 85% in organic solvent and 57% in aqueous media. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest reported for indium phosphide quantum dots. DFT calculations reveal the enhancement in quantum yield is achieved by redistribution of zinc sulfide across the indium phosphide core through thermal diffusion. By eliminating the need for a glove box and relying on Schlenk line techniques, we introduce a widely accessible method for quantum dots with a realistic potential for improved biomedical applications
Building local capacity in the arts
© 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis GroupThe importance of place-based funding and local policy initiatives is evident in policy literature internationally with concepts of creative cities and cultural regeneration building in prominence since the 1990s. Such literature makes the case that investment in arts and culture will bring broader social and economic benefits at a local level, but in practice investment and research has prioritised a small number of metropolitan arts venues and mega events over a larger rural or community-based infrastructure. This paper in contrast explores two case studies of cultural planning in small towns. It analyses the relationship between policy and practice in these specific community contexts and considers the role of participatory decision-making in developing a local arts infrastructure. The findings suggest that locally based initiatives can build capacity and engagement with the arts. But it further argues that this requires long-term commitment and investment, to facilitate shared decision-making between professionals and public
