Turboprop cargo aircraft systems study
The effects of using advanced turboprop propulsion systems to reduce the fuel consumption and direct operating costs of cargo aircraft were studied, and the impact of these systems on aircraft noise and noise prints around a terminal area was determined. Parametric variations of aircraft and propeller characteristics were investigated to determine their effects on noiseprint areas, fuel consumption, and direct operating costs. From these results, three aircraft designs were selected and subjected to design refinements and sensitivity analyses. Three competitive turbofan aircraft were also defined from parametric studies to provide a basis for comparing the two types of propulsion

The effects of advanced propellers (propfan) on aircraft direct operating costs, fuel consumption, and noiseprints were determined. A comparison of three aircraft selected from the results with competitive turbofan aircraft shows that advanced turboprop aircraft offer these potential benefits, relative to advanced turbofan aircraft: 21 percent fuel saving, 26 percent higher fuel efficiency, 15 percent lower DOCs, and 25 percent shorter field lengths. Fuel consumption for the turboprop is nearly 40 percent less than for current commercial turbofan aircraft. Aircraft with both types of propulsion satisfy current federal noise regulations. Advanced turboprop aircraft have smaller noiseprints at 90 EPNdB than advanced turbofan aircraft, but large noiseprints at 70 and 80 EPNdB levels, which are usually suggested as quietness goals. Accelerated development of advanced turboprops is strongly recommended to permit early attainment of the potential fuel saving. Several areas of work are identified which may produce quieter turboprop aircraft
The potential of an observational data set for calibration of a computationally expensive computer model
PublishedJournal ArticleWe measure the potential of an observational data set to constrain a set of inputs to a complex and computationally expensive computer model. We use each member in turn of an ensemble of output from a computationally expensive model, corresponding to an observable part of a modelled system, as a proxy for an observational data set. We argue that, given some assumptions, our ability to constrain uncertain parameter inputs to a model using its own output as data, provides a maximum bound for our ability to constrain the model inputs using observations of the real system. Technological Devices in the Archives: A Policy Analysis
Doing research in the archive is the cornerstone of humanities scholarship.
Various archives institute policies regarding the use of technological
devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, and cameras in their reading rooms.
Such policies directly affect the scholars as the devices mediate the nature of
their interaction with the source materials in terms of capturing, organizing,
note taking, and record keeping for future use of found materials. In this paper,
we present our analysis of the policies of thirty archives regarding the use of
technology in their reading rooms. This policy analysis, along with data from
interviews of scholars and archivists, is intended to serve as a basis for developing
mobile applications for assisting scholars in their research activities. In this

Analytic Kramer kernels, Lagrange-type interpolation series and de Branges spaces
The classical Kramer sampling theorem provides a method for obtaining orthogonal sampling formulas. In particular, when the involved kernel is analytic in the sampling parameter it can be stated in an abstract setting of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of entire functions which includes as a particular case the classical Shannon sampling theory. This abstract setting allows us to obtain a sort of converse result and to characterize when the sampling formula associated with an analytic Kramer kernel can be expressed as a Lagrange-type interpolation series. On the other hand, the de Branges spaces of entire functions satisfy orthogonal sampling formulas which can be written as Lagrange-type interpolation series. Detection of Lyman-alpha Emitting Galaxies at Redshift z=4.55
Studies of the formation and early history of galaxies have been hampered by
the difficulties inherent in detecting faint galaxy populations at high
redshift. As a consequence, observations at the highest redshifts (3.5 < z < 5)
have been restricted to objects that are intrinsically bright. These include
quasars, radio galaxies, and some Ly alpha-emitting objects that are very close
to (within ~10 kpc) -- and appear to be physically associated with -- quasars.
But the extremely energetic processes which make these objects easy to detect
also make them unrepresentative of normal (field) galaxies. Here we report the
discovery using Keck spectroscopic observations of two Ly alpha-emitting
galaxies at redshift z = 4.55, which are sufficiently far from the nearest
quasar (~700 kpc) that radiation from the quasar is unlikely to provide the
excitation source of the Ly alpha emission. Instead, these galaxies appear to
be undergoing their first burst of star formation, at a time when the Universe

Multiwavelength star formation indicators: Observations
We present a compilation of multiwavelength data on different star formation
indicators for a sample of nearby star forming galaxies. Here we discuss the
observations, reductions and measurements of ultraviolet images obtained with
STIS, on board the Hubble Space Telescope, ground-based Halpha, and VLA 8.46
GHz radio images. These observations are complemented with infrared fluxes, as
well as large aperture optical radio and ultraviolet data from the literature.
This database will be used in a forthcoming paper to compare star formation
rates at different wavebands. We also present spectral energy distributions
(SEDs) for those galaxies with at least one far-infrared measurements from ISO,
longward of 100 um. These SEDs are divided in two groups, those which are
dominated by the far-infrared emission, and those where the contribution from
the far-infrared and optical emission is comparable. These SEDs are useful
