Review of the electronic book "Dealing with Uncertainties"
I review the recent book authored by Manfred Drosg, Dealing with Uncertainties, Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York 2007, ISBN-10 3-3-540-29606-9, ISBN-13 978-3-540-29606-5, which is the English translation of the author's German book, Der Umgang mit Unsicherheiten, Facultas Universitätsverlag, 2006, ISBN 3-85076-748-
This thesis examines the differences in migration and integration policy of Austria and Switzerland. The historical development of migration policy and also the recent regulations referring to the residence, the workforce entry and the integration of migrants are analyzed. The main question deals particularly with the influence of European Union politics concerning immigration controls of both countries. Nowadays, the Schengen and Dublin agreements force Austria and Switzerland to participate in European migration and asylum cooperation. The theoretical underpinning of this research is generally based on the concept of Transnationalism and in particular on the theories of Transnational Social Spaces
Antisegregationspolitik
Nowadays, ethnic segregation is known as a general and cross-cultural urban phenomenon. Concerning the causes and consequences of segregation, scientific explanation approaches, however, vary considerably. Therefore, this master thesis first deals with the most important different theoretical aspects and attempts to evaluate them, especially in consideration of present conditions. While most of the classical approaches disagree with the necessity for desegregation strategies, the current scientific discourse is much more controversial. An increasing number of scientists call for a comprehensive anti-segregation policy. They argue primarily with reference to interethnic conflicts and social segmentation. Furthermore, public and media pressure force politicians as well as urban planners to take concrete actions. The list of possible strategies comprises, to name but a few, housing policy, measures of urban development and special programmes concerning the labour market and education. The final, empirical part of this thesis provides three examples for anti-segregation policy, namely the cities of Vienna, Berlin and Hamburg
Compressibility of Al64Pd30.4Fe5.6
The stability of C2-Al64Pd30.4Fe5.6, an approximant phase to the icosahdral Al-Fe-Pd quasicrystal, has been investigated by high-pressure X-ray diffraction using a diamond-anvil cell and synchrotron radiation up to 24.30(1) GPa. The material is structurally stable within the framework of the experiment. The unit cell volume as a function of pressure follows a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with K0 = 169.5(2.5) GPa. This value is comparable to that of other quasicrystals and approximant phases containing Al and heavy transition metal

Structure factors of harmonic and anharmonic Fibonacci chains by molecular dynamics simulations
The dynamics of quasicrystals is characterized by the existence of phason
excitations in addition to the usual phonon modes. In order to investigate
their interplay on an elementary level we resort to various one-dimensional
model systems. The main observables are the static, the incoherent, and the
coherent structure factor, which are extracted from molecular dynamics
simulations. For the validation of the algorithms, results for the harmonic
periodic chain are presented. We then study the Fibonacci chain with harmonic
and anharmonic interaction potentials. In the dynamic Fibonacci chain
neighboring atoms interact by double-well potentials allowing for phason flips.
The difference between the structure factors of the dynamic and the harmonic
Fibonacci chain lies in the temperature dependence of the phonon line width. If
a bias is introduced in the well depth, dispersionless optic phonon bands split
off.Comment: 12 pages, 15 figure
