A Changing Landscape of Art: applying GIS to understand spatio-temporal variability in the rock art of Australia’s East Kimberley.

By its nature rock art is fixed in a unique topographic location from the time of its creation until it fades away. I am interested in why rock art is positioned where it is and what this means about the role of art production in society. Given the long duration since the time of production of some Kimberley rock art, the spatial distribution as we see it today has likely been heavily influenced by preservation factors, but by allowing for this we can understand its positioning as resulting from a combination of human and natural agency in terms of conscious site selection as well as being constrained by an especially dynamic environment. The spatial distribution of a body of rock art is interesting in itself: it is a marker of past use of the landscape. But the main strength of an archaeological approach lies in what we can learn from how the spatial distribution changes over time. How does spatial change act as a proxy for understanding larger socio-environmental change over time? To this end I hope to compare the placement of motifs from two art phases: Gwion art, and Wandjina. Whilst dating is still uncertain, most Gwion art appears to have been produced during the Pleistocene (prior to about twelve thousand years ago). Wandjina art production appears to begin during the mid-Holocene (about five thousand years ago), and is a continuing tradition

Woolworths and Wales: A Multi-Dimensional Analysis of the Loss of a Local Brand

In this paper we present a multi-dimensional analysis of the closure of Woolworths in Wales and the way in which the loss of this familiar high-street brand can be accounted for at a number of levels and within different social arenas. Primarily, the paper demonstrates how Woolworths is positioned as a symbol a previous era of consumption centred upon community and place based notions of nostalgia and community. What is striking in the analysis is the similarities in the way in which Woolworths is mobilised as a symbol by the general public and elites; albeit with varying outcomes and affects. In presenting the analysis the paper demonstrates a processual framing as providing a fruitful approach to the combination of different approaches and fields of inquiry (sociology, geography, and political science) without diminishing their distinct contributions.Recession, 'Credit Crunch', Community, Economy, the High-Street, Welsh Assembly Government, Woolworths, Consumption

Consultation with children and young people with experience of domestic abuse on Scottish Government National Domestic Abuse Delivery Group draft proposals : main report

Findings and Conclusions: Major Themes • There was support in principle from young people for all of the proposals • Young people gave careful consideration to the proposals and to how they might operate in practice; they expressed some caution about supporting them unreservedly until it was demonstrated they would work in practice • In relation to all of the proposals young people had concerns about confidentiality and privacy, about to the ability to control the flow of personal information, and there were concerns about trust • Participants expressed the importance of the proposals contributing to young people being and feeling safe

The minimal nilpotent orbit, the Joseph ideal, and differential operators

AbstractFix a simple complex Lie algebra g, not of type G2, F4, or E8. Let Ōmin denote the Zariski closure of the minimal non-zero nilpotent orbit in g, and let g = n+ ⊕ h ⊕ n− be a triangular decomposition. We proveTHEOREM. (1) If g is not of type An then there exists an irreducible component X̄ of Ōmin ∩ n+ such that U(g)/Jo = D(X̄), where Jo is the Joseph ideal and D(X̄) denotes the ring of differential operators on X̄. (2) If g is of type An then for n − 2 of the n irreducible components X̄i of Ōmin∩ n+ there exist (distinct) maximal ideals Ji of U(g) such that U(g)/Ji= D(X̄i)

Adapting water management to climate change in the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia

    Get PDF
Climate change is threatening water security in water-scarce regions across the world, challenging water management policy in terms of how best to adapt. Transformative new approaches have been proposed, but management policies remain largely the same in many instances, and there are claims that good current management practice is well adapted. This paper takes the case of the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia, where management policies are highly sophisticated and have been through a recent transformation in order to critically review how well adapted the basin’s management is to climate change. This paper synthesizes published data, recent literature, and water plans in order to evaluate the outcomes of water management policy. It identifies several limitations and inequities that could emerge in the context of climate change and, through synthesis of the broader climate adaptation literature, proposes solutions that can be implemented when basin management is formally reviewed in 2026
