A review of sight-reading research and methodologies with implications for saxophone pedagogy
This essay seeks to determine what teaching and performing techniques foster greater sight-reading skill. Research on sight-reading is reviewed to ascertain what variables affect sight-reading skill as well as what teaching techniques have been determined to be most effective. The shortcomings of the current research are discussed and recommendations for further research are included. Method books, articles, and texts on sight-reading are reviewed to reveal specific exercises that aid in developing sightreading proficiency. The information gathered is then related and adapted to be applicable to performance on the saxophone. Examples include rhythmic drills, counting exercises, exercises for reading ahead, as well as exercises for finger technique specific to the saxophone
