Let the text speak for itself : incomplete readings of "Celestina"

The study takes up in earnest some incomplete readings of Celestina, readings that require extra or more complete information to make them clear and instrumental in the interpretation of the work. Omitting information and reading with pre-conceived notions and favoring forcing textual readings are often the cause of many incomplete or prejudicial readings. Four cases are taken up and completed with the full resources of the text.Fil: Snow, Joseph T.. Michigan State Universit

Folklore and literature. Studies in the portuguese, brazilian, sephardic, and hispanic oral traditions

    Get PDF
Folklore and Literature is a collection of entertaining yet scholarly writing with something for every student of oral Romance literatures. Its author is well - known for his extensive work in the Hispano - Portuguese ballad tradition and his cycle of studies on many other medieval and early modern works of popular poetry and prose ( Celestina, Lozana andaluza ). His expertise, accumulated over long years of direct contact with folk song and folkways, is on ample display in this ambitiously sub titled collection of eight studies, complete with appendices of full texts that were only partially referred to in the studies, useful end notes, almost thirty pages of works cited – a sign of the extensive preparation that informs this collection – and, fin ally, three indexes: [1] Ballads, Popular Songs, and Folktales; [2] Euphemisms and Metaphors (a specialty of the author); and [3] Subjects and Proper Names

Interstellar abundance determination using IUE data

    Get PDF
Analysis of the silicon interstellar abundances was made for more heavily reddened lines of sight than were accessible to the Copernicus satellite. Silicon rarely had accurate column densities determined from Copernicus data because the available lines all lie on the flat portion of the curve of growth. With International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) it is possible to reach color excesses of E(B-V) approximately 0.5-0.7, and in addition obtain data on the weak SiII line at 1808 A, so that a wide range of oscillator strengths is available. The lower resolving power of the IUE causes difficulties in that several of the SiII lines are blended with strong lines of other species. Data on the lines of sight analyzed suggested that some of the absorption lines fall on the damped portion of the curve of growth, implying that silicon may not be as highly depleted as expected
