Dark Energy and the mass of galaxy clusters
Up to now, Dark Energy evidences are based on the dynamics of the universe on
very large scales, above 1 Gpc. Assuming it continues to behave like a
cosmological constant on much smaller scales, I discuss its effects
on the motion of non-relativistic test-particles in a weak gravitational field
and I propose a way to detect evidences of at the scale of
about 1 Mpc: the main ingredient is the measurement of galaxy cluster masses.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, references adde
A survey of users of earth resources remote sensing data
The results of a NASA supported Battelle survey to obtain user views on the nature and value of LANDSAT data use, on current LANDSAT capabilities, and on ways to improve data use were summarized. Questionnaire and interview responses from over 1000 private and public sector users were analyzed and discussed
Survey of users of earth resources remote sensing data
A user survey was conducted to determine current earth resources survey (ERS) data use/user status and recommendations for strengthening use. Only high-altitude aircraft and satellite (primarily LANDSAT) data were included. Emphasis was placed on the private sector/industrial user. Objectives of the survey included: who is using ERS data, how they are using the data, the relative value of current data use as well as obtaining user views as to possible ways of strengthening future ERS data use. The survey results are documented and should provide relevant decision making information for developing future programs of maximum benefit to all end users of satellite ERS data
A close look into an intermediate redshift galaxy using STIS
We present a detailed view of a galaxy at z=0.4 which is part of a large
database of intermediate redshifts using high resolution images. We used the
STIS parallel images and spectra to identify the object and obtain the
redshift. The high resolution STIS image (0.05'') enabled us to analyse the
internal structures of this galaxy. A bar along the major axis and hot-spots of
star formation separated by 0.37'' (1.6 kpc) are found along the inner region
of the galaxy. The analysis of the morphology of faint galaxies like this one
is an important step towards estimating the epoch of formation of the Hubble
classification sequence.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter - accepte
Fact: Many SCUBA galaxies harbour AGNs
Deep SCUBA surveys have uncovered a large population of ultra-luminous
galaxies at z>1. These sources are often assumed to be starburst galaxies, but
there is growing evidence that a substantial fraction host an AGN (i.e., an
accreting super-massive black hole). We present here possibly the strongest
evidence for this viewpoint to date: the combination of ultra-deep X-ray
observations (the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North) and deep optical spectroscopic
data. We argue that upward of 38% of bright (f850um>=5mJy) SCUBA galaxies host
an AGN, a fraction of which are obscured QSOs (i.e., L_X>3x10^{44} erg/s).
However, using evidence from a variety of analyses, we argue that in almost all
cases the AGNs are not bolometrically important (i.e., <20%). Thus, star
formation appears to dominate their bolometric output. A substantial fraction
of bright SCUBA galaxies show evidence for binary AGN activity. Since these
systems appear to be interacting and merging at optical/near-IR wavelengths,
their super-massive black holes will eventually coalesce.Comment: Invited contribution - 10 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the

Spectroscopic follow up of arclets in AC114 with the VLT
We present the first results on the VLT/FORS-1 spectroscopic survey of
amplified sources and multiple images in the lensing cluster AC114. Background
sources were selected in the cluster core, close to the critical lines, using
photometric redshifts combined with lensing inversion criteria. Spectroscopic
results are given, together with a brief summary of the properties of some of
these high-z galaxies.Comment: 4pages. To appear in the Proceedings of the XXth Moriond Astrophysics
