Young stars and non-stellar emission in the aligned radio galaxy 3C 256
We present ground-based images of the z=1.824 radio galaxy 3C 256 in the
standard BVRIJHK filters and an interference filter centered at 8800A, a Hubble
Space Telescope image in a filter dominated by Ly-alpha emission (F336W), and
spectra covering rest-frame wavelengths from Ly-alpha to [O III] 5007. Together
with published polarimetry observations, we use these to decompose the overall
spectral energy distribution into nebular continuum emission, scattered quasar
light, and stellar emission. The nebular continuum and scattered light together
comprise half (one third) of the V-band (K-band) light within a 4-arcsec
aperture, and are responsible for the strong alignment between the
optical/near-infrared light and the radio emission. The stellar emission is
dominated by a population estimated to be 100-200 Myr old (assuming a Salpeter
IMF), and formed in a short burst with a peak star formation rate of 1-4x10^3
Msun/yr. The total stellar mass is estimated to be no more than 2x10^{11} Msun,
which is far less than other luminous radio galaxies at similar redshifts, and
suggests that 3C 256 will undergo further star formation or mergers.Comment: 35 pages including 10 figures; to appear in Nov 10 Ap
Capturing the dynamics of genome replication on individual ultra-long nanopore sequence reads.
Replication of eukaryotic genomes is highly stochastic, making it difficult to determine the replication dynamics of individual molecules with existing methods. We report a sequencing method for the measurement of replication fork movement on single molecules by detecting nucleotide analog signal currents on extremely long nanopore traces (D-NAscent). Using this method, we detect 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporated by Saccharomyces cerevisiae to reveal, at a genomic scale and on single molecules, the DNA sequences replicated during a pulse-labeling period. Under conditions of limiting BrdU concentration, D-NAscent detects the differences in BrdU incorporation frequency across individual molecules to reveal the location of active replication origins, fork direction, termination sites, and fork pausing/stalling events. We used sequencing reads of 20-160 kilobases to generate a whole-genome single-molecule map of DNA replication dynamics and discover a class of low-frequency stochastic origins in budding yeast. Sonographic bridging callus at six weeks following displaced midshaft clavicle fracture can accurately predict healing
3D ultrasound reconstruction of sonographic callus:a novel imaging modality for early evaluation of fracture healing
AIMS: The aim of this study was to establish a reliable method for producing 3D reconstruction of sonographic callus. METHODS: A cohort of ten closed tibial shaft fractures managed with intramedullary nailing underwent ultrasound scanning at two, six, and 12 weeks post-surgery. Ultrasound capture was performed using infrared tracking technology to map each image to a 3D lattice. Using echo intensity, semi-automated mapping was performed to produce an anatomical 3D representation of the fracture site. Two reviewers independently performed 3D reconstructions and kappa coefficient was used to determine agreement. A further validation study was undertaken with ten reviewers to estimate the clinical application of this imaging technique using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: Nine of the ten patients achieved union at six months. At six weeks, seven patients had bridging callus of ≥ one cortex on the 3D reconstruction and when present all achieved union. Compared to six-week radiographs, no bridging callus was present in any patient. Of the three patients lacking sonographic bridging callus, one went onto a nonunion (77.8% sensitive and 100% specific to predict union). At 12 weeks, nine patients had bridging callus at ≥ one cortex on 3D reconstruction (100%-sensitive and 100%-specific to predict union). Presence of sonographic bridging callus on 3D reconstruction demonstrated excellent reviewer agreement on ICC at 0.87 (95% confidence interval 0.74 to 0.96). CONCLUSION: 3D fracture reconstruction can be created using multiple ultrasound images in order to evaluate the presence of bridging callus. This imaging modality has the potential to enhance the usability and accuracy of identification of early fracture healing. Cite this article: Bone Joint Res 2021;10(12):759–766

Laser-Induced Fabrication of Metallic Interlayers and Patterns in Polyimide Films
Self-metallizing polyimide films are created by doping polyamic acid solutions with metallic ions and solubilizing agents. Upon creating a film, the film is exposed to coherent light for a specific time and then cured. The resulting film has been found to have a metallic surface layer and a metallic subsurface layer (interlayer). The layer separating the metallic layer has a uniform dispersion of small metal particulates within the polymer. The layer below the interlayer has larger metal particulates uniformly distributed within the polymer. By varying the intensity or time of exposure to the coherent light, three-dimensional control of metal formation within the film is provided

The Exploration Systems Development (ESD) Standing Review Board (SRB) requested the NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) conduct an independent review of the plan developed by Ground Systems Development and Operations (GSDO) for identifying models and emulators to create a tool(s) to verify their command and control software. The NESC was requested to identify any issues or weaknesses in the GSDO plan. This document contains the outcome of the NESC review
Review of the quarter's economic trends [January 1977]
There is now ample evidence that the pace of recovery in the major economies slackened during 1976. Published statistics, however, are as yet inadequate to document the full extent of the slowdown or to assert that it was a transient phenomenon. Available evidence would suggest that the growth in the major economies in 1977 may be somewhat slower than had earlier been forecast, and that in the short run further reductions in unemployment and inflation rates may be very difficult to achieve. Several threads may be drawn together in an attempt to justify this interpretation of likely future developments
