Police officers play a very important role in their communities, considering they need to interact with the public in order to carry out their duties. For that reason, the relationship between the public and police officers has been the focus of many studies. The current study analyzed data from the 2011 Police-Public Contact Survey (n= 49,246). The study was conducted in three separate parts - the relationship between individual demographic characteristics and type of contact with the police, individual demographic characteristics and perceptions of police, and type of contact with the police and perceptions of the police. The results from this study were consistent with previous findings from studies that used smaller populations, as it was found that women were more likely to have voluntary contact with police than men, non-Hispanics had more voluntary contact with police than those of Hispanic Origin, women reported more positive perceptions of police, there was a positive relationship between age and perception of the police, and those who had voluntary contact had a more positive perception of police officers than those who had involuntary contact

Volumetric calibration of a propellant utilization system

Method of calibrating capacitance-type propellant mass sensors provides meaningful mass units accurate to within one percent of the total load. Neither special propellant loading nor test firing is required. Recalibration of the system is possible without special propellant loading. This method provides increased flexibility for vehicle operation

Mapping loci for chlorosis associated with chlorophyII b deficiency in potato

About 30% of the potato plants from a (Solanum tuberosum Ă— S. berthaultii) Ă— S. tuberosum backcross population had chlorotic, malformed leaves; but a gradation in symptom severity suggested regulation by more than one gene. The study was undertaken to determine whether this was the case, whether any genes previously reported to control chlorosis in potato were involved, and to see how symptoms were related to effects on chlorophyll content. Testing for quantitative trait loci indicated major control by a single recessive gene on chromosome 1, close to one or more loci that have been reported to produce chlorosis in tomato, but distinct from similar genes previously identified in potato. The proposed symbol for the potato gene that confers phenotype with chlorotic and malformed leaves is cml (chlorotic and malformed leaves). The effects of this gene appeared to be accentuated by a second gene, located on chromosome 12. Chlorotic plants showed a 50% decrease in chlorophyll b level in the affected parts of leaves. It is concluded that cml is different from previously reported genes for chlorosis in potato, that at least one other gene modifies the intensity of symptom expression, and that the observed chlorosis is produced through effects on chlorophyll b level

Improving Health Outcomes for LGBTQ+ Youth Through Provider Education

Background and Problem: LGBTQ+ adolescents and young adults (ages 12-25 years) are known to have higher rates of physical and mental health concerns compared to heterosexual and cisgender youth. Within the LGBTQ+ youth community, rates of suicidality, substance misuse, homelessness, and STIs are higher than in the general population. LGBTQ+ youth have greater challenges accessing healthcare and higher rates of healthcare discrimination. This paper presents a quality improvement project focused on improving evidence-based practices in LGBTQ+ healthcare through the development and implementation of a LGBTQ+ youth centered educational workshop for healthcare providers. Methods: This project was organized in collaboration with stakeholders at Adolescent Health Working Group (AHWG) based on identified needs of the organization. The design and education of the workshop was supported by current literature and evaluation was performed. The theory of cultural humility informed the development of the project and outcome measures. Interventions: An educational workshop was provided to 11 providers within the AHWG network. A pre- and post-workshop evaluation was provided to assess learning outcomes. Additionally, a toolkit drive was provided with educational resources for providers and educational handouts for youth and caregivers. Results: Providers were assessed on knowledge, confidence in providing LGBTQ+ centered youth care, and attitudes toward LGBTQ+ youth within the pre- and post-evaluations. For knowledge-centered questions, the highest attainable score increased by 29.9%. For confidence-centered questions, the highest attainable score increased by 26.8%. And the attitudes-centered highest attainable score increased by 6.0%. Overall, this led to an average improvement in pre- and post-workshop scores of 20.9%. Conclusion: There is a gap in healthcare provider knowledge around LGBTQ+ youth centered care. Providing education on LGBTQ+ youth health needs can help address the knowledge gap in healthcare providers. With increased education, healthcare providers will have improved abilities in providing equitable LGBTQ+ youth care.
