Background: Nowadays, disaster preparedness and responses are essential for everyone to be involved since the disaster becomes increasing. The Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) in particular are the key partners required adequately prepared in emergency care during disaster event. Purpose: The study aims to examine the essential knowledge and skills of emergency care during natural disaster for CHVs. Method: The reviews published during 2000 and 2011 searching from PubMed, Science Direct, CINAHL, ProQuest Medical Library were conducted. Result: Twenty-four articles and documents related to community-based disaster preparedness programs were intensively reviewed. Based on the review, six components of knowledge and skills for emergency care in natural disaster for CHVs are required including 1) early warning, 2) disaster triage, 3) first aid, 4) search and rescue, 5) logistic and communication, and 6) team organizations. Conclusion: There was a few studies focusing on the emergency care in disaster management and some factors related to knowledge and skills were shown. It is therefore recommended that the current CHVs' knowledge and skills should be explored in order to assist people in their community following disaster event when professional responders are not immediately available to help

Mitochondria-encoded genes contribute to evolution of heat and cold tolerance in yeast

Genetic analysis of phenotypic differences between species is typically limited to interfertile species. Here, we conducted a genome-wide noncomplementation screen to identify genes that contribute to a major difference in thermal growth profile between two reproductively isolated yeast species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces uvarum. The screen identified only a single nuclear-encoded gene with a moderate effect on heat tolerance, but, in contrast, revealed a large effect of mitochondrial DNA (mitotype) on both heat and cold tolerance. Recombinant mitotypes indicate that multiple genes contribute to thermal divergence, and we show that protein divergence in COX1 affects both heat and cold tolerance. Our results point to the yeast mitochondrial genome as an evolutionary hotspot for thermal divergence. This work was supported by the NIH (grant GM080669) to J.C.F. Literary Studies on Heroic Journey reflection in Wrath of the Titans Movie

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to analyze the representation of hero’s journey patterns from Perseus's journey in the film Wrath of the Titans. In this study, a qualitative descriptive method was used to describe the speech and actions of the characters. The structuralism approach is applied to analyze the building blocks of the film, namely the intrinsic elements. While the theory of heroism used to analyze the representation of heroes in the main character is the theory proposed by Joseph Campbell (2004). The results showed that Perseus as the main character is a hero, seen from the journey of his life in accordance with the pattern of the stages of the hero journey in Joseph Campbell's theory. There is a slight difference in the film, where the last pattern is refusal to return where Perseus refuses to continue his destiny as a god and prefers to return to live as a human with his son. However, this is not a vital difference that can change the heroic figure of Perseus

Provider-initiated testing and counseling (PITC) is a routine HIV counseling and testing offered to adult clients attending at health care facilities. In Tanzania PITC started in 2007, with the aim of increasing early HIV diagnosis and timely access to care, treatment and support services. The objective of this study was to assess the level of knowledge and practice of health care providers on PITC. This cross sectional study was conducted in April-May 2010 among nurses and clinicians working in the government health care facilities in Mbeya City, south-western Tanzania. Self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain relevant information from the study participants. A total of 402 (95% response rate) care providers were interviewed. Their mean (± SD) age was 41 ± 9.5 years. The majority 304 (76%) were nurses. Their duration of practice ranged from 4 months to 39 years. All the care providers reported to be aware of PITC services. However, 35% of them had inadequate knowledge of PITC and 269 (67%) reported to have ever offered PITC services. Median number of clients attended per week was 3 (IQR, 1-6 clients). Participants who had attended special training on PITC were 6-fold more likely to offer PITC services [OR = 6.2, 95% CI = 3.7-10.2; P<0.001] than those who had not attended. In conclusion more than one-third of health providers do not routinely offer PITC in Mbeya City, leading to missed opportunity for early HIV diagnosis. On job and in-service training to improve PITC knowledge and supportive supervision for those trained is required

Differentiated Thyroid Cancer with Extrathyroidal Extension: Prognosis and the Role of External Beam Radiotherapy

    Get PDF
A study was performed to identify variables that affected cause-specific survival (CSS) and local relapse-free rate (LRFR) in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and extrathyroid extension (ETE) and to examine the role of external beam radiotherapy (XRT). Prognostic factors were similar to those found in studies of all patients with DTC. In patients with postoperative gross residual disease treated with radiotherapy, 10-year CSS and LRFR were 48% and 90%. For patients with no residual or microscopic disease, 10-year CSS and LRFR were 92% and 93%. In patients older than 60 years with T3 ETE but no gross residual disease postoperatively there was an improved LRFR at 5 years of 96%, compared to 87.5% without XRT (P = .02). Patients with gross ETE benefit from XRT and there may be a potential benefit in reducing locoregional failure in patients over 60 years with minimal extrathyroidal extension (T3)

Myogram on-and-off controller is important for improving or assisting the elderly people. One of the most important aspects of the controller development is to determine the on and off time with respect to the body movement. In this project, high accuracy signal filtering, high gain amplifier, signal converter, microcontroller and electrodes are used for circuit simulation and development to obtain muscle signal (Electromyogram). Precision rectifier is used to solve the ordinary semiconductor problem to avoid signal block. To ensurethe user-friendliness in the development of this device, non-invasive electrodes are used in this project instead of invasive electrodes

An auxin-inducible, GAL4-compatible, gene expression system for Drosophila

    Get PDF
The ability to control transgene expression, both spatially and temporally, is essential for studying model organisms. In Drosophila, spatial control is primarily provided by the GAL4/UAS system, whilst temporal control relies on a temperature-sensitive GAL80 (which inhibits GAL4) and drug-inducible systems. However, these are not ideal. Shifting temperature can impact on many physiological and behavioural traits, and the current drug-inducible systems are either leaky, toxic, incompatible with existing GAL4-driver lines, or do not generate effective levels of expression. Here, we describe the auxin-inducible gene expression system (AGES). AGES relies on the auxin-dependent degradation of a ubiquitously expressed GAL80, and therefore, is compatible with existing GAL4-driver lines. Water-soluble auxin is added to fly food at a low, non-lethal, concentration, which induces expression comparable to uninhibited GAL4 expression. The system works in both larvae and adults, providing a stringent, non-lethal, cost-effective, and convenient method for temporally controlling GAL4 activity in Drosophila
