Unilateral Hemiparesis with Thoracic Epidural in an Adolescent

Objective. Unilateral sensory and motor blockade is known to occur with epidural anesthesia but is rarely reported in children. The differential diagnosis should include the presence of a midline epidural septum. Case Report. We describe a case of a 16-year-old adolescent who developed repeated complete unilateral extensive epidural sensory and motor blockade with Horner's syndrome after thoracic epidural catheter placement. This unusual presentation of complete hemibody neural blockade has not been reported in the pediatric population. Maneuvers to improve contralateral uniform neural blockade were unsuccessful. An epidurogram was performed to ascertain the correct location of the catheter within the epidural space and presence of sagittal compartmentalization. Conclusion. This case report highlights a less frequently reported reason for unilateral sensory and motor blockade with epidural anesthesia in children. The presence of a midline epidural septum should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unilateral epidural blockade

The evolution of the huntingtin-associated protein 40 (HAP40) in conjunction with huntingtin

Background The huntingtin-associated protein 40 (HAP40) abundantly interacts with huntingtin (HTT), the protein that is altered in Huntington's disease (HD). Therefore, we analysed the evolution of HAP40 and its interaction with HTT. Results We found that in amniotes HAP40 is encoded by a single-exon gene, whereas in all other organisms it is expressed from multi-exon genes. HAP40 co-occurs with HTT in unikonts, including filastereans such as Capsaspora owczarzaki and the amoebozoan Dictyostelium discoideum, but both proteins are absent from fungi. Outside unikonts, a few species, such as the free-living amoeboflagellate Naegleria gruberi, contain putative HTT and HAP40 orthologs. Biochemically we show that the interaction between HTT and HAP40 extends to fish, and bioinformatic analyses provide evidence for evolutionary conservation of this interaction. The closest homologue of HAP40 in current protein databases is the family of soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment proteins (SNAPs). Conclusion Our results indicate that the transition from a multi-exon to a single-exon gene appears to have taken place by retroposition during the divergence of amphibians and amniotes, followed by the loss of the parental multi-exon gene. Furthermore, it appears that the two proteins probably originated at the root of eukaryotes. Conservation of the interaction between HAP40 and HTT and their likely coevolution strongly indicate functional importance of this interaction

FOMENTO AO USO DAS TICs NOS CURSOS DE GRADUAÇÃO DA UNIVERSIDADE DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIRO:: UMA EXPERIÊNCIA EM DESENVOLVIMENTO

Este trabalho apresenta o Projeto de Fomento às Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TICs) nos Cursos de Graduação presencial oferecidos pela UERJ, a partir de recursos do Edital Nº 15 DED/CAPES para a inserção das ferramentas tecnológicas na prática docente quotidiana, capacitando os professores a utilizá-las e apoiando-os na produção de conteúdos educacionais e materiais didáticos. Objetiva-se aproximar a linguagem dos educadores (que usam as tecnologias) da linguagem dos alunos (que cresceram com as tecnologias), de modo a convergir para a Sabedoria Digital. São três os eixos que norteiam o Projeto: (a) Capacitação de Recursos Humanos; (b) Produção de Conteúdos Educacionais e Materiais Didáticos e (c) Oferta de Disciplinas com uso de TICs. O processo avaliativo será consolidado através da análise global dos resultados obtidos com a aplicação dos instrumentos e da geração dos indicadores

A EXTENSÃO UNIVERSITÁRIA EM UM POLO DE EDUCAÇÃO A DISTÂNCIA: O CASO DE NOVA FRIBURGO/RJ

Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir a importância da relação entre uma instituição promotora de cursos EAD em nível superior, seus estudantes e a comunidade. Para isso, é apresentado um breve histórico das atividades realizadas no Polo EAD de Nova Friburgo em seus 10 anos de existência, com foco naquelas relacionadas à extensão universitária. Destaca-se a utilização do blog do Polo, criado em setembro de 2010, com o intuito de funcionar como mais um canal de comunicação entre instituição, estudantes e comunidade. Vale observar que as relações instituição-estudante e instituição-comunidade podem ser tão importantes para a formação dos estudantes quanto a relação estudante-professor, geralmente a mais abordada em estudos sobre EAD. A valorização de tais relações contribui para uma EAD com mais qualidade para seus estudantes e maior interação com a sociedade
