Beyond the Five Towns: a re-evaluation of Arnold Bennett
âI have a great deal to say, and I mean to say it. As for my work being taken seriously, we shall see about thatâ.
Arnold Bennett, 1909
(Bennett, letter to Pinker dated 17 May 1909, in Letters, Vol. I, p. 123.)
Arnold Bennett occupies a somewhat anomalous position as an Edwardian realist in a century dominated by modernist aesthetics. Pigeonholed by critics who have tended to adopt an overly formalist approach when considering his fiction, Bennettâs critical acclaim has predominantly been restricted to his Five Towns novels and has been advocated through readings which arrogate to him a slavish homage to nineteenth-century French naturalism and a quasi-documentary representation of particular locales. This dissertation aims to challenge Bennettâs categorisation as a merely provincial author, and as an Edwardian deserving of the canonical segregation initially proposed by Virginia Woolf, which separates his work from â and subordinates it to â that of his early twentieth-century or early Modernist contemporaries. To this end, I will demonstrate that Bennett was in fact, readily incorporating early twentieth-century themes and techniques, and actively engaging with various aspects of individual, social and national politics in comparable ways to other Modernists. I will also contend â contrary to critics who have regarded the war as having killed Bennettâs creativity â that the war occasioned a shift in Bennettâs agenda that, though not appreciated in his time or in the years after his death, is now in need of re-evaluation.
With respect to methodology, this dissertation contextualises Bennettâs artistic strategies in light of early twentieth-century aesthetic concerns, and it demonstrates that his prose techniques serve social and/or political purposes. The thesis is divided into three chapters, each of which explores a stage of Bennettâs literary career. Chapter I covers 1898, the year of publication for Bennettâs first novel, The Man from the North, to 1913, also analysing A Great Man (1904) and Buried Alive (1908). Chapter II attends to Bennettâs fictional and non-fictional writings of the War years, including The Roll-Call (1919) â which begins in 1901 and culminates in 1914 â Liberty (1914), and Over There (1915). Chapter III examines Bennettâs writing from 1919 onwards, focusing on three novels: Riceyman Steps (1923), Lord Raingo (1926), and Accident (1929)
Quaternary Cu2ZnSnSe4 thin films for solar cells applications
Polycrystalline thin films of Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) were produced by selenisation of Cu(Zn,Sn) magnetron sputtered metallic precursors for solar cell applications. The p-type CZTSe absorber films were found to crystallize in the stannite structure (a = 5.684 Ă⊠and c = 11.353 ĂâŠ) with an electronic bandgap of 0.9 eV. Solar cells with the structure were fabricated with device efficiencies up to 3.2%
Use of combinatorial analysis for the study of new material for solar cells applications
This paper presents a combinatorial method for the deposition and
characterization of new metallic precursors for photovoltaic materials.
Onedimensional thin film alloy âlibrariesâ were electrodeposited on Mo-coated
glass. The library elements were deposited in two consecutive baths and then
heated in a reducing atmosphere to promote interdiffusion of the elements. At
the end of this process, the libraries possessed a composition gradient along
their lengths, with single elements at their two opposite ends and one or more
alloys and/or a solid state solution in between. This continuous range of
compositions can therefore be considered a collection of specific precursors
that can be interrogated by examining their corresponding locations, with the
crystallographic structure along the library changing in accordance with the
phase diagram for the metals. The libraries were then sulphurised or selenised
by heating in a sulphur-rich or selenium rich atmosphere; this converted the
metallic precursors in a continuous range of materials, candidates for potential
solar cells absorbers. The libraries were analysed by X-ray diffraction and
energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The X-ray diffraction results show phase
changes across the libraries, which can be correlated with the original
precursor concentration at that particular p

Resumindo, a inteligĂȘncia emocional
