Gender and Rapid Alterations of Hemispheric Dominance during Planning
Background: Mental planning and carrying out a plan provoke specific cerebral hemodynamic responses. Gender aspects of hemispheric laterality using rapid cerebral hemodynamics have not been reported. Method: Here, we applied functional transcranial Doppler sonography to examine lateralization of cerebral hemodynamics of the middle cerebral arteries of 28 subjects (14 women and 14 men) performing a standard planning task. There were easy and difficult problems, and mental planning without motor activity was separated from movement execution. Results: Difficult mental planning elicited lateralization to the right hemisphere after 2 or more seconds, a feature that was not observed during movement execution. In females, there was a dominance to the left hemisphere during movement execution. Optimized problem solving yielded an increased laterality change to the right during mental planning. Conclusions: Gender-related hemispheric dominance appears to be condition-dependent, and change of laterality to the right may play a role in optimized performance. Results are of relevance when considering laterality from a perspective of performance enhancement of higher cognitive functions, and also of psychiatric disorders with cognitive dysfunctions and abnormal lateralization patterns such as schizophrenia. Quality of life predicts outcome of deep brain stimulation in early Parkinson disease
Objective Toinvestigatepredictorsforimprovementofdisease-speciïŹcqualityoflife(QOL)afterdeepbrainstimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) for Parkinson disease (PD) with early motor complications. Methods We performed a secondary analysis of data from the previously published EARLYSTIM study, a prospective randomizedtrialcomparingSTN-DBS(n= 124)tobestmedicaltreatment(n= 127)after2yearsfollow-up with disease-speciïŹc QOL (39-item Parkinson âs Disease Questionnaire summary index [PDQ-39-SI]) as the primary endpoint. Linear regression analyses of the baseline characteristics age, disease duration, duration of motor complications, and disease severity measured at baseline with the UniïŹed Parkinsonâs Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS)(UPDRS-IIIâoïŹâandâonâmedications,UPDRS-IV)wereconductedtodeterminepredictors of change in PDQ-39-SI. Results PDQ-39-SIatbaselinewascorrelatedtothechangeinPDQ-39-SIafter24monthsinbothtreatmentgroups (p<0.05).Thehigherthebaselinescore(worseQOL)thelargertheimprovementinQOLafter24months. No correlation was found for any of the other baseline characteristics analyzed in either treatment group. Conclusion Impaired QOL as subjectively evaluated by the patient is the most important predictor of beneïŹt in patients with PD and early motor complications, fulïŹlling objective gold standard inclusion criteria for STN-DBS. Our results prompt systematically including evaluation of disease-speciïŹc QOL when selecting patients with PD for STN-DBS
Effect of 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3-Glycosides on the Farrowing Process and Piglet Vitality in a Free Farrowing System.
Vitamin D improves the reproductive efficiency in animals. This study aimed to examine the effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3-gylcosides (1,25-vitD) on the farrowing process in sows and the vitality of their piglets. In total, 100 sows were allocated into two groups at insemination ('1,25-vitD' and 'negative control'). The 1,25-vitD group received 260-300 mg/sow/day 1,25-vitD in their feed during the gestation period. Backfat thickness, fecal score, and the farrowing process was evaluated. The piglets were categorized into live born or stillborn, and vitality was evaluated by assessing the umbilical cord and the meconium score. The number of total-born piglets in sows of '1,25-vitD' was higher and the farrowing duration was shorter than in the negative control group without showing significance in the univariable analysis. In a linear multiple regression model including the variables 'farrowing duration', 'total born piglets' and '1,25-vitD' differences became evident. We found that 1,25-vitD was associated with a reduced farrowing duration (p = 0.055). Moreover, significantly more mummies (p < 0.01) and short ruptured umbilical cords (p < 0.05) were observed in the 1,25-vitD group. This study showed an effect of 1,25-vitD on the farrowing process. However, more research is needed to better describe the mechanism of 1,25-vitD in detail
pfsearchV3: a code acceleration and heuristic to search PROSITE profiles
Summary: The PROSITE resource provides a rich and well annotated source of signatures in the form of generalized profiles that allow protein domain detection and functional annotation. One of the major limiting factors in the application of PROSITE in genome and metagenome annotation pipelines is the time required to search protein sequence databases for putative matches. We describe an improved and optimized implementation of the PROSITE search tool pfsearch that, combined with a newly developed heuristic, addresses this limitation. On a modern x86_64 hyper-threaded quad-core desktop computer, the new pfsearchV3 is two orders of magnitude faster than the original algorithm. Functional transcranial Doppler: Selection of methods for statistical analysis and representation of changes in flow velocity
INTRODUCTION
Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a method used to study cerebral hemodynamics. In the majority of TCD studies, regression analysis and analysis of variance are the most frequently applied statistical methods. However, due to the dynamic and interdependent nature of flow velocity, nonparametric tests may allow for better statistical analysis and representation of results.
METHOD
The sample comprised 30 healthy participants, aged 33.87â±â7.48âyears; with 33% (n = 10) females. During a visuo-motor task, the mean flow velocity (MFV) in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) was measured using TCD. The MFV was converted to values relative to the resting state. The results obtained were analyzed using the general linear model (GLM) and the general additional model (GAM). The fit indices of both analysis methods were compared with each other.
RESULTS
Both MCAs showed a steady increase in MFV during the visuo-motor task, smoothly returning to resting state values. During the first 20âseconds of the visuo-motor task, the MFV increased by a factor of 1.06â±â0.07 in the right-MCA and by a factor of 1.08â±â0.07 in the left-MCA. GLM and GAM showed a statistically significant change in MFV (GLM:F(2, 3598) = 16.76, Pâ<â.001; GAM:F(2, 3598) = 21.63, Pâ<â.001); together with effects of hemispheric side and gender (GLM:F(4, 3596) = 7.83, Pâ<â.005; GAM:F(4, 3596) = 2.13, P = .001). Comparing the models using the Ï test for goodness of fit yields a significant difference Ï (9.9556) = 0.6836, Pâ<â.001.
CONCLUSIONS
Both the GLM and GAM yielded valid statistical models of MFV in the MCA in healthy subjects. However, the model using the GAM resulted in improved fit indices. The GAM's advantage becomes even clearer when the MFV curves are visualized; yielding a more realistic approach to brain hemodynamics, thus allowing for an improvement in the interpretation of the mathematical and statistical results. Our results demonstrate the utility of the GAM for the analysis and representation of hemodynamic parameters
Longitudinal changes of the insertion of the maxillary labial frenum in children and adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment.
INTRODUCTION
This study aimed to evaluate potential vertical changes in the position of the maxillary labial frenum (MLF) insertion in growing children and to compare these changes to the vertical growth of the dentoalveolar process and lower facial third.
METHODS
This retrospective longitudinal study investigated records of 33 healthy children. Dental casts, lateral cephalograms, and photographs were evaluated at pretreatment (T0), posttreatment (T1), and 3-5 years into retention (T2). To evaluate the vertical changes of MLF insertion in relation to the vertical growth of the dentoalveolar process, the palatal plane (PP) was used as a reference. These changes were also compared between different MLF typologies (ascribed as thin or fibrous).
RESULTS
The distance from MLF to PP only slightly increased from T0 to T2 by 0.6 ± 0.5 mm (P <0.001), whereas the distance between the incisal edge and PP increased significantly from T0 to T2 by 2.6 ± 0.8 mm (P <0.001). A positive correlation was found (r = 0.94; P <0.001) between the changes from the incisal edge to the PP and the MLF to the incisal edge between T0 and T2. No correlation was found between the change from the incisal edge to the PP and MLF to PP between T0 and T2. Thin MLF types showed a larger increase in distance from their insertion to the incisal edge (2.6 ± 0.8 mm) than thick MLF types (1.8 ± 0.7; P <0.03).
CONCLUSIONS
The MLF remains stable compared with the PP, whereas the maxillary incisal edge moves away from the PP, indicating increased vertical growth of the alveolar process. Dentists should be aware of those changes before performing interventions such as unnecessary frenectomies
