Intermolecular polarization interactions in water are determined using a
minimal atomic multipole model constructed with distributed polarizabilities.

Peierls Instabilities in Quasi-One-Dimensional Quantum Double-Well Chains
Peierls-type instabilities in quarter-filled () and half-filled
() quantum double-well hydrogen-bonded chain are investigated
analytically in the framework of two-stage orientational-tunnelling model with
additional inclusion of the interactions of protons with two different optical
phonon branches. It is shown that when the energy of proton-phonon coupling
becomes large, the system undergoes a transition to a various types of
insulator states. The influence of two different transport amplitudes on ground
states properties is studied. The results are compared with the pressure effect
experimental investigations in superprotonic systems and hydrogen halides at

Quasiparticle band structure of infinite hydrogen fluoride and hydrogen chloride chains
We study the quasiparticle band structure of isolated, infinite HF and HCl
bent (zigzag) chains and examine the effect of the crystal field on the energy
levels of the constituent monomers. The chains are one of the simplest but
realistic models of the corresponding three-dimensional crystalline solids. To
describe the isolated monomers and the chains, we set out from the Hartree-Fock
approximation, harnessing the advanced Green's function methods "local
molecular orbital algebraic diagrammatic construction" (ADC) scheme and "local
crystal orbital ADC" (CO-ADC) in a strict second order approximation, ADC(2,2)
and CO-ADC(2,2), respectively, to account for electron correlations. The
configuration space of the periodic correlation calculations is found to
converge rapidly only requiring nearest-neighbor contributions to be regarded.
Although electron correlations cause a pronounced shift of the quasiparticle
band structure of the chains with respect to the Hartree-Fock result, the
bandwidth essentially remains unaltered in contrast to, e.g., covalently bound

Benefits and barriers among volunteer teaching faculty: comparison between those who precept and those who do not in the core pediatrics clerkship
Background: Community-based outpatient experiences are a core component of the clinical years in medical school. Central to the success of this experience is the recruitment and retention of volunteer faculty from the community. Prior studies have identified reasons why some preceptors volunteer their time however, there is a paucity of data comparing those who volunteer from those who do not. Methods: A survey was developed following a review of previous studies addressing perceptions of community-based preceptors. A non-parametric, Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare active preceptors (APs) and inactive preceptors (IPs) and all data were analyzed in SPSS 20.0. Results: There was a 28% response rate. Preceptors showed similar demographic characteristics, valued intrinsic over extrinsic benefits, and appreciated Continuing Medical Education (CME)/Maintenance of Certification (MOC) opportunities as the highest extrinsic reward. APs were more likely to also precept at the M1/M2 level and value recognition and faculty development opportunities (p<0.05). IPs denoted time as the most significant barrier and, in comparison to APs, rated financial compensation as more important (p<0.05). Conclusions: Community preceptors are motivated by intrinsic benefits of teaching. Efforts to recruit should initially focus on promoting awareness of teaching opportunities and offering CME/MOC opportunities. Increasing the pool of preceptors may require financial compensation
Communication calls produced by electrical stimulation of four structures in the guinea pig brain
One of the main central processes affecting the cortical representation of conspecific vocalizations is the collateral output from the extended motor system for call generation. Before starting to study this interaction we sought to compare the characteristics of calls produced by stimulating four different parts of the brain in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). By using anaesthetised animals we were able to reposition electrodes without distressing the animals. Trains of 100 electrical pulses were used to stimulate the midbrain periaqueductal grey (PAG), hypothalamus, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Each structure produced a similar range of calls, but in significantly different proportions. Two of the spontaneous calls (chirrup and purr) were never produced by electrical stimulation and although we identified versions of chutter, durr and tooth chatter, they differed significantly from our natural call templates. However, we were routinely able to elicit seven other identifiable calls. All seven calls were produced both during the 1.6 s period of stimulation and subsequently in a period which could last for more than a minute. A single stimulation site could produce four or five different calls, but the amygdala was much less likely to produce a scream, whistle or rising whistle than any of the other structures. These three high-frequency calls were more likely to be produced by females than males. There were also differences in the timing of the call production with the amygdala primarily producing calls during the electrical stimulation and the hypothalamus mainly producing calls after the electrical stimulation. For all four structures a significantly higher stimulation current was required in males than females. We conclude that all four structures can be stimulated to produce fictive vocalizations that should be useful in studying the relationship between the vocal motor system and cortical sensory representation
Interaction between Temozolomide and Water: Preferred Binding Sites
Computational methods are used to predict the most favorable site of temozolomide towards attack by a water molecule. The energetics of the various complexes are presented as well as their geometries, including perturbations of each subunit caused by the presence of the other. Molecular electrostatic potential and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) data are used to understand the interactions which conclude the terminal amide group is the preferred attack site where water can act as simultaneous proton donor and acceptor. Other potential proton acceptor N atoms within the aromatic ring structure represent weaker binding sites. Some of the less strongly bound structures include a CH⋯O H-bond
Measuring and Comparing Party Ideology and Heterogeneity
Estimates of party ideological positions in Western Democracies yield useful party-level information, but lack the ability to provide insight into intraparty politics. In this paper, we generate comparable measures of latent individual policy positions from elite survey data which enable analysis of elite-level party ideology and heterogeneity. This approach has advantages over both expert surveys and approaches based on behavioral data, such as roll call voting and is directly relevant to the study of party cohesion. We generate a measure of elite positions for several European countries using a common space scaling approach and demonstrate its validity as a measure of party ideology. We then apply these data to determine the sources of party heterogeneity, focusing on the role of intraparty competition in electoral systems, nomination rules, and party goals. We find that policy-seeking parties and centralized party nomination rules reduce party heterogeneity. While intraparty competition has no effect, the presence of these electoral rules conditions the effect of district magnitude
Defining the Boundaries of Development wih Plasticity
International audienceThe concept of plasticity has always been present in the history of developmental biology, both within the theory of epigenesis and within morphogenesis studies. However this tradition relies also upon a genetic conception of plasticity. Founded upon the concepts of "phenotypic plasticity" and "reaction norm," this genetic conception focuses on the array of possible phenotypic change in relation to diversified environments. Another concept of plasticity can be found in recent publications by some developmental biologists (Gilbert, West-Eberhard). I argue that these authors adopt a "broad conception of plasticity" that is closely related to a notion of development as something that is ongoing throughout an organism's lifecycle, and has no clear-cut boundaries. However, I suggest that given a narrow conception of plasticity, one can define temporal boundaries for development that are linked to specific features of the morphological process, which are different from behavioral and physiological processes
Queen mandibular pheromone: questions that remain to be resolved
The discovery of ‘queen substance’, and the subsequent identification and synthesis of keycomponents of queen mandibular pheromone, has been of significant importance to beekeepers and to thebeekeeping industry. Fifty years on, there is greater appreciation of the importance and complexity of queenpheromones, but many mysteries remain about the mechanisms through which pheromones operate. Thediscovery of sex pheromone communication in moths occurred within the same time period, but in this case,intense pressure to find better means of pest management resulted in a remarkable focusing of research activityon understanding pheromone detection mechanisms and the central processing of pheromone signals in themoth. We can benefit from this work and here, studies on moths are used to highlight some of the gaps in ourknowledge of pheromone communication in bees. A better understanding of pheromone communication inhoney bees promises improved strategies for the successful management of these extraordinary animals
