Inclusive workplaces : a review and model
Organizations continue to be challenged and enriched by the diversity of their workforces. Scholars are increasingly focusing on inclusion to enhance work environments by offering support for a diverse workforce. This article reviews and synthesizes the inclusion literature and provides a model of inclusion that integrates existing literature to offer greater clarity, as well as suggestions for moving the literature forward. We review the inclusion literature consisting of the various foci (work group, organization, leader, organizational practices, and climate) and associated definitions and how it has developed. We then describe themes in the inclusion literature and propose a model of inclusion. Finally, we end by discussing theoretical and practical implications
DIGNITY AND RESPECT IN THE SALSA DANCE CLASSROOM: FOSTERING HEALTHY SELF- ESTEEM TO PROMOTE COMPASSION
Many students that have attempted to take salsa dance classes often express their disillusionment in the way in which they are treated by salsa dance instructors. Salsa dance classes have the possibility to function to awaken in the student greater integration with the society in which people live, while stimulating actions, improving self-esteem, and self-confidence, improving vocabulary, awakening sensitivity, attenuating shyness, as well as increasing communicative and social skills. If the content of a course is well designed and delivered with an intentional student-centered approach, it can positively contribute to greater and more sincere learning. In this sense, the objective of this study was to analyze and reflect on the ideas of dignity and self-respect in the context of the learning environment created. With these ideas in mind, the purpose of this research was to investigate the outcome of treating students with dignity and respect, specifically in the salsa dance classroom. This study was designed to employ an environment that would foster a healthy self-esteem and would promote compassion with students. Two groups of ten participants in each group were compared in this study. The participant responses to these teaching strategies were tracked via pre and post surveys, and interview questions which provided insight regarding best practices and approaches for building students’ strategies both in and out of the dance class
Machine Kinship: The impossible duet
Machine Kinship: The impossible duet What does it mean to vanish from earth when you are the last of your kind? In 1987 the Kauai OO was recorded singing his final song. It was meant to be a duet, but as the last of his kind his song hangs in the air, unanswered. The other half of the duet is forever lost. Built to sing at dawn, birds must wake up earlier to hear each other before human chaos interferes. So here, it is always almost sunrise. As a parallel past-future response, the last birdsong was fed into a machine learning model created to record human voices, but instead is listening to the song learning and recreating the response. This second song will join him in a technological afterlife. Contained in a ghost flower, whose color proteins were removed to replace it with the bird heartbeat. This is a moment frozen in time, of an impossible duet. The AI will try to learn the song before dawn
Videogame-based learning: a comparison of direct and indirect effects across outcomes
2017 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Recent years have shown a rise in the application of serious games used by organizations to help trainees learn and practice job related skills (Muntean, 2011). Some sources have projected a continued growth in the development and application of video games for novel purposes (Sanders, 2015). Despite the increasing use of video games for workplace training, there is limited research evidence to justify the use of video games for learning. Additionally, this research has generated mixed results on the utility of serious games (Guillen-Nieto & Aleson-Carbonell, 2012). One contribution of this study is a review of the research literature to understand why videogame-based learning research is producing inconsistent results. From this review, I present several current challenges in the research literature that may be contributing to these inconsistencies; distinguishing videogames from similar training media, identifying game characteristics, exploring the possible mechanisms in the training experience, differentiating training outcomes, and making accurate implications for research. The purpose of this study is to design and test a new approach to game-based learning research that would explore the context in which games are effective learning tools. This study tested and expanded the model from Garris et al.'s (2002) game-based learning I-P-O model to determine the extent to which one game characteristic (i.e., human interaction) influences two training outcomes (i.e., declarative knowledge and affective states), as well as the possible mechanisms through which this occurs. The present study found that active learning is a mechanism through which human interaction influences both declarative knowledge and affective states. Although the effect size was large for affective states, it was small for declarative knowledge. The mediating effect of active learning was greater for the relationship between human interaction and affective states than for the relationship between human interaction and declarative knowledge. I also found that perceived value mediates the relationship between human interaction and affective states
A LEAN LOGISTICS ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR SMEs IN THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR
This study developed an assessment tool to rate the maturity of the current and desired states of lean logistics operations in small and medium enterprises. The tool consists of 48 best practices classified into 8 critical factors: Inventory, Transportation, Administration, Information Systems, Warehouse, Forecasting, Packaging and Supplier Network. Each of the best practices and critical factors were identified throughout a thorough literature review and comparative analysis between authors to define commonalities among them. Using gap analysis; this tool results in a SWOT matrix providing a roadmap for lean implementation. The resulting model was evaluated by subject matter experts in different criteria, including: clarity, content accuracy, relevance, content validity, avoidance of bias, appropriateness of language, and clarity of instructions. The evaluations resulted in some minor corrections but not important changes to the content were incorporated as result of these evaluations. This research project represents the initial steps to developing a self-assessment tool; additional work is required before the tool could actually be used for managers in SMEs

Giant umbilical hernia case report and literature review
Umbilical hernia is a defect of the abdominal fascia that allows the protrusion of the intestinal content through the umbilical ring, in adults these hernias are associated with increased intra-abdominal pressure caused by obesity, abdominal distension, and abdominal distension. We presented the clinical case of a 38-year-old female patient who presented a giant umbilical hernia with contents of the transverse colon and necrotic ascending colon, performing abdominal wall plasty with separation of components. Treatment of patients with giant hernias is a challenge. The presence of non-viable bowel should not be considered a contraindication for mesh repair. Giant umbilical hernias are an uncommon pathology which requires knowledge of the different techniques of abdominal wall repair as well as their possible complications
húmedo, de 2285 kg/m3.The influence of the substitution of the normal coarse aggregate for the coarse
aggregate of brick rubble in the compressive strength of the concrete with
portland type I cement has been determined.
For which; mixtures were dosed with three ratios a / c (0.63, 0.68 and 0.72) and
settlement of 3”. 75 cylindrical specimens were prepared and cured for each a / c
ratio in accordance with ASTM C 192 and ASTM C 39. These were tested at ages
7, 14 and 28 days for each a / c.
It is concluded that the substitution of the thick aggregate of brick rubble, of
maximum nominal size of 3/8 "", does not significantly alter in the compressive
strength of the dosed concrete. Being the unit weight of the concrete, wet, of
2,285 kg / m3.Tesi
