International audienceThe worked bones from the Middle Magdalenian deposits in Gazel cave were recently re-examined. This led to the identification of two artifacts bearing close resemblance -in dimensions, decoration and type of bone used- to the engraved spatulas made of horse mandibles found in Pekárna cave. This is the closest parallel currently known for these exceptional objects. This discovery strengthens the idea of long-distance relations in the Magdalenian -here between western Languedoc and Moravia- and raises the question of the exact dating of the Pekárna artifacts.L'industrie osseuse du Magdalénien moyen de la grotte Gazel a récemment fait l'objet d'une révision globale. À cette occasion, deux objets présentant de fortes similitudes de dimensions, de support et de décor avec les spatules magdaléniennes, façonnées sur mandibule de cheval, de la grotte de Pekárna furent identifiés. Il s'agit du parallèle le plus étroit établi jusqu'ici pour ces pièces exceptionnelles. Cette découverte renforce l'idée de relations à longue distance au Magdalénien, en l'occurrence entre le Languedoc occidental et la Moravie, et invite à reconsidérer la question de l'âge exact des pièces de Pekárna

Scaling methodology and scale reporting in the TREE2 panel survey. Documentation of scales implemented in the baseline survey (2016). Update 2023

This documentation refers to the database of the 2nd TREE cohort’s (TREE2) as published in the 2023 data release (TREE, 2023). It outlines the statistical models and estimation methods employed for scale construction and the calculation of student scores based on questionnaire items. Furthermore, we discuss the various metrics and indicators of relevant scale propertiescompiled in the technical appendix for all scales implemented in the TREE2 baseline survey. The focus of the scale reporting is on the internal consistency of the scales and on the comparability of the measurements across survey languages, survey modes and survey settings involved. With very few exceptions, the results indicate at least sufficient or high internal consistency and measurement invariance of the scales used. A complementary documentation covering the scales employed in later panel waves can be found in the 2023 TREE2 data release (Sacchi & Krebs-Oesch, 2023). With the exception of a few additional metrics of longitudinal measurement invariance over panels waves (ibid., sections 3.6, 4.2), it basically relies on the methods presented in this report

Documentation of scales implemented from panel wave 1 onwards

This paper documents the questionnaire-based scales and item composites administered in the first two waves of the second TREE cohort (TREE2) in 2017 and 2018. At the centre of this working paper is a technical appendix, which provides, for each scale, a detailed tabular report of selected statistics and quality measures. The focus is on the scales’ reliability, dimensionality and measurement invariance. The scaling and calculation of factor scores rely essentially on the same factor-analytical models and methods as in the TREE2 baseline survey. These are described in detail in sec-tion 3 of the respective documentation of the scales used in that survey (see Sacchi & Krebs-Oesch, 2021). The documentation also describes the selection, calculation and interpretation of the figures and quality measures reported in the tabular appendix (ibid., section 4). Against this backdrop, the explanatory notes in the introduction of the present documenta-tion are restricted to a description of the database for both waves and of some modifications in the applied methods. In addition, we also describe a series of newly introduced statistics of longitudinal measurement invariance for scales with repeated measures

First, the paper focuses on the methods and the estimation procedures that we have adopted for the calculation of the student scores published in the scientific use data files. Structure and magnetism of orthorhombic epitaxial FeMnAs

The molecular beam epitaxy growth of Fe on MnAs/GaAs(001) leads to the formation of an epitaxial FeMnAs phase at the Fe/MnAs interface. The investigation of the structure by high angle annular dark field imaging in a scanning transmission electron microscope reveals an unusual orthorhombic structure, with vacancy ordering. The geographical area held for this study was divided into three main zones : the Iberian Basque country, the Atlantic and Central Pyrenees, the Eastern Pyrenees. The synthesis proposed is built around the four following topics : - the history of researches and chronostratigraphic context; - material culture: lithic and bone industries; - artistic and symbolic evidences : body ornamentation, mobiliary art and rock art; - palaeo-environment.Les auteurs présentent un panorama général sur le Gravettien des Pyrénées. Le Moustérien tardif des Pyrénées méditerranéennes

À partir de la documentation fournie par la grotte des Ermitons (Garrotxa) et celle de Belvis (Aude), le lecteur trouvera dans cet article une évocation  des principales caractéristiques de l’ultime phase de l’occupation moustérienne dans les Pyrénées méditerranéennes. Ce stade tardif du Paléolithique moyen, postérieur aux plus anciennes manifestations du Paléolithique supérieur attestées dans la région, produit une industrie lithique comportant des pointes de Châtelperron dont la signification est présentement discutée.We have studied the most recent Mousterian settlements known in the Mediterranean Pyrenees, which were found in caves known as Ermitons (in Garrotxa, Catalonia) and Belvis (in Aude, France). These sites are dated as later than the first settlements of the Upper Palaeolithic in the region.
