    Development of single-cell protectors for sealed silver-zinc cells

    Three design approaches to cell-level protection were developed, fabricated, and tested. These systems are referred to as the single-cell protector (SCP), multiplexed-cell protector(MCP). To evaluate the systems 18-cell battery packs without cell level control were subjected to cycle life test. A total of five batteries were subjected to simulate synchronous orbit cycling at 40% depth of discharge at 22C. Batteries without cell-level protection failed between 345 and 255 cycles. Cell failure in the cell level protected batteries occurred between 412 and 540. It was determined that the cell-level monitoring and protection is necessary to attain the long cycle life of a AgZn battery. The best method of providing control and protection of the AgZn cells depends on the specific application and capability of the user

    Development of single cell protectors for sealed silver-zinc cells, phase 1

    A single cell protector (SCP) assembly capable of protecting a single silver-zinc (Ag Zn) battery cell was designed, fabricated, and tested. The SCP provides cell-level protection against overcharge and overdischarge by a bypass circuit. The bypass circuit consists of a magnetic-latching relay that is controlled by the high and low-voltage limit comparators. Although designed specifically for secondary Ag-Zn cells, the SCP is flexible enough to be adapted to other rechargeable cells. Eighteen SCPs were used in life testing of an 18-cell battery. The cells were sealed Ag-Zn system with inorganic separators. For comparison, another 18-cell battery was subjected to identical life test conditions, but with battery-level protection rather than cell-level. An alternative approach to the SCP design in the form of a microprocessor-based system was conceptually designed. The comparison of SCP and microprocessor approaches is also presented and a preferred approach for Ag-Zn battery protection is discussed

    High single-mode power conversion efficiency vertical-cavity top-surface-emitting lasers

    Includes bibliographical references.We report advances in the power conversion (wall-plug) efficiency of vertical-cavity top-surface-emitting lasers. The devices were fabricated from molecular beam epitaxial layers using deep proton implants to define gain-guided lasers. The epitaxial structure included low resistance, piecewise linearly graded n-type and p-type mirrors, a triple In0.2Ga0.8As quantum-well active region, and a delta-doped contact layer. Power conversion efficiencies as high as 12.7% for continuous-wave single-mode operation were measured after several hours of device operation.This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract DE-AC04-76DP00789

    Data pattern dependence of VCSEL far-field distributions

    Includes bibliographical references.The far field divergence angle distribution of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers is found to exhibit dependence on the data pattern driving the lasers. Two 50% duty cycle 1.25-Gb/s data patterns chosen to cause the same thermal conditions but with frequency content differing by a factor of 16 resulted in changes in the beam profile distributions with up to a 30% power variation in the central on-axis portion of the beam. Examination of the temporal waveforms as a function of far field angle revealed overshoot in the on-axis power and undershoot in the off-axis portion of the beam

    Developmental Expression of Elements of Hepatic Cholesterol Metabolism In The Rat

    The expression of several key enzymes and receptors of rat hepatic cholesterol metabolism was studied during development. Among major findings were: acyl coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase, the cholesteryl ester hydrolases, cholesterol-7 alpha-hydroxylase and the alpha 2-macroglobulin receptor (LRP) were very low in fetal livers, but all were induced shortly before birth, suggesting that these elements are important for extrauterine life. Although the other elements continued to increase, by day 6 of postnatal life, cholesterol-7 alpha-hydroxylase had reached undetectable levels. It reappeared by day 12 of suckling, placing it in the group of late-appearing activities necessary for the fully mature hepatic phenotype. Changes in acyl coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase activity appeared due predominantly to changes in amount of active protein. The cholesteryl ester hydrolase (CEH) activities all showed different developmental patterns, suggesting that each was a unique activity. The bile salt- dependent CEH activity was much higher in the suckling period than in the adult where it was almost undetectable, suggesting that this CEH may have its major importance in the suckling period of development. Low density lipoprotein receptors exhibited a pattern very different from that of the alpha 2-macroglobulin receptors and did not show consistent correlation with any other elements. At some developmental time points, the relationships amongst the elements differed significantly from the adult pattern. These studies provide for the first time an integrated picture of developmental expression of key elements of hepatic cholesterol metabolism and set the stage for further studies on their modes of regulation

    Spontaneous Appearance and Transmission of Polydactyly in Dexter Cattle

    A 3-yr-old Dexter cow and her yearling Dexter heifer calf exhibited polydactyly. Neither animal was linebred within 5 generations. This cow-calf pair represented the first reported occurrence of polydactyly in Dexter cattle in the US or abroad. Based upon external examination, the cow was classified as having a spontaneous unilateral case of polydactyly with an extra digit along the medial digit of the right front limb and the heifer was classified as having bilateral polydactyly because both front limbs exhibited an extra digit along the medial digit. Radiographic examination confirmed bilateral status of the heifer and revealed bilateral status of the cow. The front feet of the cow and heifer had extra bone formation consistent with an extra digit along the medial digit. Neither animal suffered from limited mobility to date or required hoof treatments. The cow produced a second calf from a different sire, a bull calf that did not appear polydactylous per external examination and was not examined radiographically. The two polydactylous animals will remain in the breeding herd to produce more study calves unless their fitness becomes compromised. Genetic aspects of the cases are discussed

    Multi-elemental composition of authigenic carbonates in benthic foraminifera from the eastern Bering Sea continental margin (International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1343)

Available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record. Bering Sea sediments represent exceptional archives, offering the potential to study past climates and biogeochemistry at a high resolution. However, abundant hydrocarbons of microbial origin, especially along the eastern Bering Sea continental margin, can hinder the applicability of palaeoceanographic proxies based on calcareous foraminifera, due to the formation of authigenic carbonates. Nonetheless, authigenic carbonates may also bear unique opportunities to reconstruct changes in the sedimentary redox environment. Here we use a suite of visual and geochemical evidence from single-specimens of the shallow infaunal benthic foraminiferal species Elphidium batialis Saidova (1961), recovered from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1343 in the eastern Bering Sea, to investigate the influence of authigenic carbonates on the foraminiferal trace metal composition. Our results demonstrate that foraminiferal calcite tests act as a nucleation template for secondary carbonate precipitation, altering their geochemistry where organoclastic sulphate reduction and anaerobic oxidation of methane cause the formation of low- and high-Mg calcite, respectively. The authigenic carbonates can occur as encrusting on the outside and/or inside of foraminiferal tests, in the form of recrystallization of the test wall, or as banding along natural laminations within the foraminiferal test walls. In addition to Mg, authigenic carbonates are enriched in U/Ca, Mn/Ca, Fe/Ca, and Sr/Ca, depending on the redox environment that they were formed in. Our results demonstrate that site-specific U/Ca thresholds are a promising tool to distinguish between diagenetically altered and pristine foraminiferal samples, important for palaeoceanographic reconstructions utilising the primary foraminiferal geochemistry. Consistent with previous studies, U/Mn ratios of foraminifera at IODP Site U1343 increase according to their degree of diagenetic alteration, suggesting a potential response of authigenic U/Mn to the microbial activity in turn linked to the sedimentary redox environment.BGS University Funding Initiative Ph.D. studentshi

    Evaluation of cholesterol and vitamin E concentrations in adult alpacas and nursing crias

    The objective of this study was to determine if serum cholesterol and vitamin E concentrations change with production and physiologic state in alpacas. Blood was collected from 3 groups of alpacas. An adult female group was sampled in the periparturient period and once monthly until their offspring were weaned. Crias born to the females were sampled after birth, then once monthly until weaning. A group consisting of males was sampled once monthly throughout the study period. Serum vitamin E and cholesterol concentrations were measured and vitamin E to cholesterol ratios was calculated. Vitamin E concentrations were similar throughout the different physiologic states. Cria vitamin E concentrations closely correlated to that of their dam. Significant cholesterol concentration fluctuations in crias occurred after 4 weeks of life possibly due to milk fat content. After weaning, the cholesterol concentrations became similar to the adult animals within study. Vitamin E concentrations varied with age in crias as they transitioned from a milk to forage based diet. Cholesterol fluctuated with altered physiologic and metabolic demands, most noticeable in the crias. Further studies are needed to determine if vitamin E to cholesterol ratios would be more appropriate to fully assess the vitamin E status in nursing crias

    Hypervelocity Impact Performance of Open Cell Foam Core Sandwich Panel Structures

    Open cell metallic foam core sandwich panel structures are of interest for application in spacecraft micrometeoroid and orbital debris shields due to their novel form and advantageous structural and thermal performance. Repeated shocking as a result of secondary impacts upon individual foam ligaments during the penetration process acts to raise the thermal state of impacting projectiles ; resulting in fragmentation, melting, and vaporization at lower velocities than with traditional shielding configurations (e.g. Whipple shield). In order to characterize the protective capability of these structures, an extensive experimental campaign was performed by the Johnson Space Center Hypervelocity Impact Technology Facility, the results of which are reported in this paper. Although not capable of competing against the protection levels achievable with leading heavy shields in use on modern high-risk vehicles (i.e. International Space Station modules), metallic foam core sandwich panels are shown to provide a substantial improvement over comparable structural panels and traditional low weight shielding alternatives such as honeycomb sandwich panels and metallic Whipple shields. A ballistic limit equation, generalized in terms of panel geometry, is derived and presented in a form suitable for application in risk assessment codes
