    The Complex Structure of the Multi-Phase Galactic Wind in a Starburst Merger

    Neutral outflows have been detected in many ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) via the Na I D λλ5890,5896\lambda\lambda 5890, 5896 absorption-line doublet. For the first time, we have mapped and analyzed the 2-D kinematics of a cool neutral outflow in a ULIRG, F10565+2448, using the integral field unit (IFU) on Gemini North to observe the Na I D feature. At the same time we have mapped the ionized outflow with the [NII] and Hα\alpha emission lines. We find a systemic rotation curve that is consistent with the rotation of the molecular disk determined from previous CO observations. The absorption lines show evidence of a nuclear outflow with a radial extent of at least 3 kpc, consistent with previous observations. The strength of the Na I D lines have a strong, spatially resolved correlation with reddening, suggesting that dust is present in the outflow. Surprisingly, the outflow velocities of the neutral gas show a strong asymmetry in the form of a major-axis gradient that is opposite in sign to disk rotation. This is inconsistent with entrained material rotating along with the galaxy or with a tilted minor-axis outflow. We hypothesize that this unusual behavior is due to an asymmetry in the distribution of the ambient gas. We also see evidence of asymmetric ionized outflow in the emission-line velocity map, which appear to be decoupled from the neutral outflow.     Metallicity Gradients and Gas Flows in Galaxy Pairs

    We present the first systematic investigation into the metallicity gradients in galaxy close pairs. We determine the metallicity gradients for 8 galaxies in close pairs using HII region metallicities obtained with high signal-to-noise multi-slit observations with the Keck LRIS Spectrograph. We show that the metallicity gradients in close pairs are significantly shallower than gradients in isolated spiral galaxies such as the Milky Way, M83, and M101. These observations provide the first solid evidence that metallicity gradients in interacting galaxies are systematically different from metallicity gradients in isolated spiral galaxies. Our results suggest that there is a strong relationship between metallicity gradients and the gas dynamics in galaxy interactions and mergers.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table.     Design of lightning protection for a full-authority digital engine control

    The steps and procedures are described which are necessary to achieve a successful lightning-protection design for a state-of-the-art Full-Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system. The engine and control systems used as examples are fictional, but the design and verification methods are real. Topics discussed include: applicable airworthiness regulation, selection of equipment transient design and control levels for the engine/airframe and intra-engine segments of the system, the use of cable shields, terminal-protection devices and filter circuits in hardware protection design, and software approaches to minimize upset potential. Shield terminations, grounding, and bonding are also discussed, as are the important elements of certification and test plans, and the role of tests and analyses. Also included are examples of multiple-stroke and multiple-burst testing. A review of design pitfalls and challenges, and status of applicable test standards such as RTCA DO-160, Section 22, are presented

    Certification of lightning protection for a full-authority digital engine control

    FADEC systems present many challenges to the lightning protection engineer. Verification of the protection-design adequacy for certification purposes presents additional challenges. The basic requirements of the certification plan of a FADEC is to demonstrate compliance with Federal Airworthiness Regulations (FAR) 25.1309 and 25.581. These FARs are intended for transport aircraft, but there are equivalent sections for general aviation aircraft, normal and transport rotorcraft. Military aircraft may have additional requirements. The criteria for demonstration of adequate lightning protection for a FADEC systems include the procedures outlined in FAA Advisory Circular (AC) 20-136, Protection of aircraft electrical/electronic systems against the indirect effects of lightning. As FADEC systems, including the interconnecting wiring, are generally not susceptible to direct attachment of lightning currents, the verification of protection against indirect effects is primarily described
