Impact of Flash Crashes on Market Structure

    Get PDF
The Flash Crash of May 6, 2010 was one of the biggest flash crashes ever to be recorded in the history of the US stock markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank down to 998.5 its highest intraday fall. Other indexes also met with the same fate resulting in a very low overall market sentiment. The impact of Flash crash created havoc in the market and new developments have come up in 2015 which points to manipulation. This clearly shows stronger need for regulatory intervention to curb such events from happening again. The thesis investigates abnormal market returns over a period of one year starting from three months before the crash. The paper constructs an event time line to clearly indicate how stocks reacted before, during and after the Flash Crash. The paper examines abnormal returns from twenty one stocks of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The results indicate that the stock return on the day of the crash is negative while the returns on subsequent trading days are low due to negative market sentiment towards the event. However the effect of the negative return is restricted only for one or two days after the crash.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format

Happily Ever After? Ambiguous Closure in Modernist Children\u27s Literature

This study explores the fruitful interchanges between modernist literary technique, the culture of modernity, and children\u27s literature. While some recent scholarship has examined works that modernist authors like Eliot, Joyce, Woolf, and Cummings produced for child readers, modernist children\u27s literature remains a largely neglected field. Examining texts by A.A. Milne (Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner), Gertrude Stein (The World is Round), and J.M. Barrie (Peter and Wendy) through the lens of literary modernism, this project explicates how these authors adapt modernist techniques, ideologies, and preoccupations in their writing for children. Focusing on themes of alienation, disillusionment, memory, imagination, gender construction, child development, and the disruption of Arcadian myths, I argue that these texts adopt modernist techniques to explore, uphold, or challenge modernity\u27s construction of the child. Embracing modernist indeterminacy and ambiguity, these texts directly engage with constructions of childhood as a mode of modernist experimentation. Recontextualizing these children\u27s works in the context of literary modernism reveals how the two genres are symbiotically related, thereby broadening our understanding of literary culture and discourses of childhood in the early twentieth century

Sacramental Ethnicity: Women’s Culture and Vernacular Religion in Twentieth-Century America

This project examines the reciprocal and evolving relationship between American women’s culture, vernacular religion, and the social development of American ethnicity. This project focuses on the roles of white ethnic women, both literary and real, in the construction, maintenance, and transmission of ethnic identity. The project highlights the connections between the folkloric performances of vernacular religion and the discursive articulation of ethnicity by focusing on two women writers and two groups of Slovak American women. The fiction of Kate Chopin and Anzia Yezierska illustrates how literary authors bring their contemporary concepts of folklore into their writing. The writings of these two women reveal the development from group-based difference to ethnicity in the early twentieth century. These literary depictions are paired with the life experience narratives collected from two small groups of Slovak American women: a subset of American Catholic sisters from the Vincentian Sisters of Charity and a group of women who belong to the Slovak Heritage Association of the Laurel Highlands. Together, these oral history-based chapters illustrate the ways in which women’s culture is fundamental to the development of American ethnicity. The stories of these women challenge the boundaries of what are considered stable boundaries of racial and ethnic groups. Through this research, I provide an overview of the techniques through which women’s engagement in informal religious traditions fuels the social dynamism of ethnicity

Povezanost epistemičkih uvjerenja s ciljevima postignuća i pristupima studenata učenju matematike
